My thinking is it's just a weird pattern he's falling into? My son is 16.5 months and literally right now regressing :-( Goes to bed fine but wakes up wailing after an hour. It's awful, and nothing that I can think of sparked it?

@wrkbrk: Our 18 mo regression started between 16-17 months and lasted till 18-19 months.
Fortunately ours wasn't awful, it was just very different from his normal self. So easy to identify.

Good luck! I would say if it's not improved in another month or so, then I'd start to consider changing different factors. But during a regression or disruption it's always best to give it some time and remain status quo.

@SweetiePie: I've noticed it for about a month. We moved into a new house two months ago, but he was golden for several weeks so idk if that's it? Unfortunately yes he's always woken up sporadically ... Maybe it is a regression? He's always been a meh sleeper so regressions don't stick out to me!

@Mrs. Pickle: Yeah, I didn't know if this was just toddler fickleness??

How long has this inconsistency been happening?
How long have the wakeups at night been happening (like is that recent or has that been the case always)?

18 months we hit a regression. It was the only one besides the 4 month that was identifiable for us. He got more resistant at bedtime and he woke up 1-2 times a night maybe 3-5 nights a week. But just had to hold him a minute and he'd go right back in the bed and fall asleep.

My 19 month old does this. Sometimes she cried when she gets in her bed and sometimes she doesn't. Her routine is always the same and her sleep is consistent. I don't think much of if. I figure she just doesn't want to stop playing.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

I have tried googling this, but to no avail:

My 18 month old is completely* inconsistent with how he reacts to bedtime, even though I do everything the same.

For a week in a row, he will go upstairs cheerfully, read a handful of books, walk over to his crib and put himself to sleep without a peep.

Then for three nights he will WAIL and I mean WAIL at having to get in his crib. No fever, no difference in naps, no difference in routine or bedtime.

Then back to normal.

ETA: He sleeps overnight (about 11 hours) with no wake-ups about half the time. The other half of the time he wakes 1-3 times and I will go up and at him back to sleep. He is a terrific napper, though, never resisting and often sleeping 2.5 hours.

What could be causing his different attitude with respect to bedtime?
