@Mrs. Jacks: thanks for linking this, it was really interesting. I've gotten a bit more relaxed about tv time but this has motivated me to scale back! My son probably watches about a half hour a day at the moment at 3.5 but I think I'll try to reduce this.

@Torchwood: I'm not really worried about you ;) In fact, the only reason I posted this is that someone a couple weeks ago asked, "How much TV watching matters? 2 hrs, an hour, 20 minutes?" At that time I explained the dose response and then this study was reported on today, so I thought I'd share it :)

And just to clarify, I'm not big on tv watching in general (I never turn it on, DH does), so don't worry I'll be plopping my kids in front of the tv every day! ;)

@Mrs. Jacks: Where did you see that they controlled for that? I must have missed it.

@Torchwood: When they've controlled for all the issues that you are bringing up, there is still the same dose response curve, even if the effect may be modified by other beneficial factors in the home... So if you take 2 upper middle class kids with involved parents and one watches 2 hours of TV every day and the other watches none, you'll still see an effect of the TV watching.

The question for me is what kind of home they're being raised in. Typically, when you see a toddler watching a ton of tv, they're in a situation where they're not getting as much attention and one on one working on learning and such. If I wind up a SAHM who actively works on skills, does creative activities every day, etc, but allow my kid to watch some tv, will they have the same deficiencies? I don't know, but I think it unlikely. It seems like the *excessive* tv watching is more of an indicator of other problems that cause the delays, rather than the sole cause.

Hopefully this isn't behind a firewall, but I remember we were having this discussion a few weeks ago regarding dose response for TV watching and here's some new data:
