Interesting read. While G had great apgars we had a few fetal distress moments and he was angry after he was born! Screamed for like 20 minutes! Lots and lots and lots of skin to skin for us those first few weeks and I think it helped with a crappy labor.

Interesting indeed. I wasn't induced, but did receive Pitocin for weak contractions. My epidural weakened and slowed my contractions so I was at 10 cm but the baby was still at a 0-1 station for hours. However, I think because I was already fully dilated and effaced, it was a much more appropriate use of the drug, and didn't have any ill effects for me or baby. I don't know his Apgar scores, but I do know he was bright red and screaming seconds after coming out of me ;) I was only on it for about 3 hours before he was born.

I had pitocin and E had respiration issues (pulmonary hypertension) but I don't think they were necessarily related, as it tends to show up in post term babies

I was induced with pitocin and had a very long labor, but I don't feel it affected LO or myself in any way, other than the "after pains." I was in extreme pain for six + weeks after labor and I think it was from the pitocin induction.

I was induced due to low fluid at 41 weeks, and my baby was born with an APGAR of 1, and had a lot of lethargy and other issues in the following week. I absolutely think that my induction was very bad for her. She had, however, the cord wrapped tightly around her neck, and with my fluid dropping was at high risk for being stillborn. So I think that it was the right choice, but it absolutely had a lot of negative effects on her.

I was induced the first time because my water broke a full 24 hours before and the contractions never started naturally. H was born 32 hours after my water broke and a lot of people were surprised they didn't do a c-section but I was only on pitocin for 7 hours (contractions never regulated, kept having to up the dosage).

H was born with his cord wrapped around his neck twice, one loose, one tight in addition to the water breaking a day earlier. He was checked out by NICU for both and scored around a seven on the APGAR. I'm glad for the pitocin - would have hated to see what it would have been like without it!

@runsyellowlites: independent association is an attempt to isolate the effect of pitocin, but there very well could be unmeasured variables or confounding that could contribute to the findings. It's always tough to tell when you are using regression models!

@photojane: 's idea makes sense to me. A friend just posted this on FB and it annoyed me. She was lucky enough to have very easy natural births but it isn't that way for everyone. As much as I planned for a 'natural' birth, I had to be induced due to high blood pressure, then ended up with a c-section because the labor was't progressing. I was on pitocin for 48 hrs and LO was born perfectly healthy.

@Mrs. Jacks: I agree that I like they're really trying to focus more on appropriate use, I've heard/read other obgyns say they believe probably around 5% of births actually "need" inductions. Wouldn't them saying it was an "independent risk factor" point to causation though, that it alone (not combined with long labor, pain meds, etc) would increase this risk? That's how I understood it is why I ask.

I think the conclusion was very appropriate. They don't discourage the use of pitocin in light of the study, just don't use it needlessly. I like photojane's hypothesis too, as correlation does not equal causation.

I think the correlation between pitocin/augmented labor and low apgar/NICU stays probably has more to do with a baby who has been stressed due to a long labor/hours of contractions & less to do with the actual use of pitocin. I had pitocin, but a short labor and a bright pink baby who scored two 9's. Just my thoughts though!

I had to be induced due to pre-e and there were definitely side effects after birth as a result! He had a slow respiratory response and couldn't maintain a high enough body temperature so he was only allowed on my chest for a few minutes because his breathing rate was down and he was turning blue. He had to be in the incubator for quite awhile and was very lethargic for his first 24 hours (as was I, but moreso from the mag). I'm not sure how much was from pitocin and how much was from mag but both together was such an awful effect ugh!

I hope next time I won't need either!

I just read this new acog release regarding a study conducted on the effects of pitocin on newborns. Since most of the information we have is in regards to maternal effects I found this interesting. I'd love to read the full study!

Thoughts?

(I wasn't sure if I should put this in general childbirth or induction)
