@justjules: my LO hated avocado so it could be a mixture of just texture and the food. If he's only 7 months he's probably still learning about swallowing so give him time. You can try less mushy things. I would steam apples, potatoes, and carrots just to the point of cooked and not crunchy for DS. We also gave him muffins and granola a lot.

@justjules we are having the same problem! We are only a week in (DD is 6 month, 1 week), but I had this image in my head that our daughter would really enjoy it and be getting some bits of food here and there.

Turns out she is not liking it. She didn't like avocado, or banana. She will pick it up, gum it, (all while making a nasty face) and then sometimes "bite" off a piece, gag, and get upset. The entire time she is moaning. We are starting to do a modified spoon feeding approach just so she doesn't develop a negative association with eating. I know we just started, but from everything I read it seemed that most babies really enjoy it from the beginning. I am wondering if she just isn't ready.

We started BLW with DD when she was 6mos. (She's now almost 1) She was already sitting up unassisted for some time and was very interested in solids. I always nursed her before every meal to make sure she was filling up on milk. I was so nervous at first. We decided to do a chunk of ripe avocado with part of the skin still on so she could get a good grip on it. She loved it! It's definitely a little nerve wracking at first but she really enjoyed it and I was surprised at how well she did! I think a big thing for me was that I was way over thinking it at first. I finally just started giving her pieces of my own food and tried to relax. I youtubed videos of BLW and first solids and what to do if baby chokes and how to tell the difference between baby gagging (which is totally normal) and baby choking. DD is a great eater and BLW made my life so much easier, I never have to feed her and I never have to make special meals for her 🙂

We have been doing BLW for about 3 weeks and started the day DS turned 6 months. He had already been sitting unassisted for over a month and was very interested in watching us eat. We started putting him in his highchair(it's one that attaches to a chair, so he is at the table with us) a couple weeks before his 6 month birthday so he could get used to being there. We would give him a spoon and cup to play with while we ate. So far he has had avocado, banana, roasted sweet potatoes, green beans, peaches, pears, eggs and yogurt (we load the spoon and put it in front of him and he "feeds" himself). He is actually really good at bringing the food to his mouth but doesn't swallow too much. We haven't experienced choking yet but he does gag. The only downside I've experienced so far is the reaction of others. I second the baby led weaning cookbook and I also follow blwideas on Instagram.

I bought a couple of books but did not find them helpful. I think there have been some blog posts on HB and also A Healthy Slice of Life that provided enough information to me.
http://www.ahealthysliceoflife.com/baby-led-weaning-first-food-ideas/
http://www.ahealthysliceoflife.com/10-meal-ideas-baby-led-weaning/
My LO wasn't fully ready for BLW at 6 months. I tried pieces of sweet potato, banana, cheerios, avocado, etc. and he wasn't interested. He never choked but he preferred purees and pouches. The first finger food he really ate was shredded chicken around 8 months.

following this board! I was going to start one similar. E is 7months now so we have been doing BLW for a month now and are still having issues. Not to thread hijack but here are some struggles we have been having:
I don't know if it's a taste or texture issue but E will refuse anything mushy (bananas avocado sweet potatoes carrots)
He likes bread and sometimes eggs
He seems to have a hard time swallowing. He will chew/swish food in his mouth then keep it in the back of his throat causing him to gag. I know it's not choking so I just let him cough till he swallows it or coughs it up. I know it probably takes practice but it's been a month now he's not getting much better :bummed:
All you experienced mamas out there.... Did your LO ever have a hard time?? I was so excited to do BLW and only hear goods things, never struggles. Is it just my DS?

You want the Babyled Weaning Cookbook. The first part describes the approach, then the rest has recipe suggestions. We used this approach for both our kids and it is fabulous. Two drawbacks that I can think of - possibility of choking (have to keep a close eye but also don't intervene if kiddo is coughing or gagging, only if breathing is truly cut off which is rare) and that it takes a while for kiddo to begin actually swallowing meaningful amounts of food. Between my two kids, we only saw true choking once, but kiddo resolved it on her own before we could do anything - so we've never had to actually do baby Heimlech.

Ok so I went four pages into the feeding board, and I think some new info,or perspectives would be awesome! So....tell me about BLW. DS will be 6 months in 3 weeks, and we've tried a few purees here and there, and honestly I'm just not a fan of spoon feeding him, and then still later on having to teach him how to feed himself. So I want to know everything. Experiences, advice, even if there is a book or blog I should read. I should also mention he is super interested in food, he loves watching DH and I eat. Thanks ladies.
