I have a ring sling that I used sporadically when DD was younger. I pulled it out again a couple months ago (when she was 16ish months old) because she was going through an "up" phase and my arms were tired...well, she HATED it. Screamed bloody murder until I took her out. I tried again a few days later and the same thing happened. So at least for us, starting to use a ring sling as a toddler would be an absolute no-go. I actually wish I'd never bought it, neither DD nor I ever liked it all that much so it was pretty much a waste of money.

My 9 mo old is probably around 20 lb and a have a maya RS we use for the occasional hip carry. She likes it pretty well and it's good for quick things (bank run, short shopping, etc) but wearing her too long hurts my shoulder. But it's super quick and easy to pack so I still use it sometimes. That being said I use the ergo more! Except lately since it's like 100 degrees we use the stroller ;) I did buy the RS used because I bought it late in the game and DH did not understand why I needed yet another babywear ing device! It's worked out really well.

i bought a sling for my 25-lb 2 year old, thinking that i would also use it for the next baby (otherwise i'm not sure i would have gotten it). we used it mainly for a trip to NYC, where a stroller would have been a pain. i could carry him for about 20 minutes at a time, but more than that it gets pretty straining because of the one shoulder. that was fine as he wanted to be up and down.

@ShootingStar: @avivoca: @Foodnerd81: Okay, I am inspired to keep trying with the Ergo. It was expensive and has been well-loved to date so I will keep trying!

@californiadreams: My thinking was that I would use it with the next one too, but I may just get a general "wrap" of some kind that can be used newborn to toddler. I only borrowed, but didn't keep a moby, and never mastered it.

I wouldn't use a ringsling with a toddler. If you do, get a wrap conversion one.

Have you thought about trying a wrap? You may be able to get more use out of it with a toddler since you would be able to do more with it. I also agree with @Foodnerd81 in mastering the back carry. It's so wonderful and my 21 month old loves it (and I love not getting hit in the chin with her head every time she moves).

i used a ring sling for the first time with my lightweight 18 month old. I think i had bought it a few months before, but only got around to trying it when the summer came around and he was 18 months then. I used it for a change and it was easy to pack and get him in and out. I think it might have been easier with a baby, but we managed. I didn't use it much past the summer as he got bigger and i really only used it for walks outside. It was still worth it though and i am looking forward to using it my next LO starting at a younger age. i never nursed in it though. But i've never tried nursing with any carrier! Something i hope to master with my next LO too.

@teawithpaloma: I haven't used a ring sling yet and I'm also interested in this, but I also want to encourage you to try the back carry wth the ergo. We had to master it this winter since we had a billion inches of snow and a dog that still needed to be walked, and it really wasn't as hard as I expected. Watch some you tube videos but after only a week or so, my then 18 month old would climb into my back herself so I could do up the shoulder straps. And she LOVED it- everyone would comment on how happy she looked (since I couldn't really see her). So I think it's worth trying out at least.

But I am still interested in the ring sling since I think that would be a lot easier to just throw in the diaper bag for those times when you need to hold her while out and about.

I have a 19lb 9 month old who loves to be carried by me at all times pretty much, but I mainly use my Tula. I have a maya sling and I found it hurt my shoulder and I didn't feel like my hands were as free. But I'm very interested to hear suggestions from others of how to better utilize because I'd love to use it more!

I have a lightweight 20lb 15 month old who isn't digging the ergo these days (front carry, inward facing) and we haven't mastered the back carry. After a day out where she occasionally would only be held by me and refused the stroller, is it crazy to think a ring sling would be used by the two of us at the stage of the game?

I'm still nursing and would love something that could help with that if we master the hold. I'm thinking the maya but as many people before me have pointed out, it can be very overwhelming and confusing.

So my two questions: is it crazy to get one for a lightweight toddler at this stage? I'm on the money thinking a reasonably affordable Maya would work?
