@lauraeabel: Welcome! It's incredible how much we worry about everything we put into our bodies when we're pregnant; you're just being a good mom-in-training. :) It sounds like your doctor made a wise & educated choice for both you and the bambino, however, and I don't think you should give it another thought. Oh, and STEP AWAY FROM GOOGLE. Feel better!

Thanks for putting my mind at ease guys- I know the doctor wouldn't prescribe something if it weren't the best option for me and the baby, I've just got time on my hands and not much to do but worry.

@greentea- she really did assure me at the appointment that it was safer than my blood pressure being as high as it was. I just let hormones and google searches get to me more than I should =)

@lauraeabel: ouch! Have you shared your concerns with your doc? I am sorry you are going through this. I had a really hardcore/ anal type doc so when she DID tell me something was okay I could trust her. I had to be on antibiotics for a week through iv in the hospital at 28 weeks and I wouldn't even pop a Tylenol my entire pregnancy. Is there another doc you can talk to if you have additional questions or need reassurance?

I've worked with opiate dependent mothers, who haven taken large amounts of opiates recreationally, or who are maintained on prescribed methadone or suboxone. We used to hear a lot about how opiates are actually one of the safest substances to use during pregnancy, because there is no lifelong significant impact for the baby, even if the need to be treated for dependence at birth. Smoking cigarettes is worse than using heroin for a fetus/baby.

Obviously you aren't abusing opiates, and are a healthy person. The dose your doctor prescribed is low. It will be totally safe for the baby, and it sounds like it will be preferable to the ongoing risks of high pain levels.

You should talk to your doctor about your concerns, but honestly I wouldn't hesitate to take them if I was in that much pain. Ouch! Get some rest and I hope you feel better!

Welcome! Can't wati to get to know you better!

I was always told in situtations like this your doctor would only percribe the medicine if it is in deed better for the baby. High blood pressure would do more damage than the effects of the pain killers. Knowing that take them as needed and do your best to ger rid of them when you can.

If your doctor prescribed it knowing you were pregnant then you should be fine. Most of those are are just high doses of acetaminophen (tylenol) anyways.

Hi guys!
This is my first post on hellobee, and I'm really excited to have found this community. I loved weddingbee during my engagement so to have a baby version is beyond awesome.

My question is has anyone been prescribed pain medication during their pregnancy? I have a herniated disc, and my OB put me on low-dose vicadin for the next week to give my body time to heal a bit because the pain was spiking my blood pressure to a level that was unsafe for baby. I know they wouldn't prescribe it if they didn't think that was the best option, but I'm really scared that I'm not doing what is right for the baby. I feel like I'm already failing them.

Anyone else ever been through this?
