@Bernieboo: we saw the pediatrician... I'm going to ask for a referral to an allergist, thanks!

I can't tell from your post if you saw your pediatrician or got a referral to an allergist for the blood test. If it's the former, go see an allergist! We love our pediatrician, but I have severe allergies to a few uncommon food rings and see an allergist. When we got the preliminary diagnosis of a milk allergy, I immediately talked to my allergist. She was able to give me much more detailed, specific information and also talked to me about challenges in the future to see if M grows out of the allergy. An allergist might also be able to give you more info on a false positive. When I had my blood testing done, she went over everything in detail and a few things were possible false positives or borderline results. Good luck!

It sounds like maybe you have a false positive, but if your LO does have a peanut allergy it's really not too bad. It feels very overwhelming at first for sure, but once you get used to checking labels and avoiding certain foods it's not hard.

The biggest struggle by far has been making sure everyone else is as diligent as I am. I have had two out of three sitters fail to follow food instructions despite carefully explaining the risks and preparing her foods ahead of time (I think we've just been unlucky in that regard) So we've had to keep our house 100% safe for her which is annoying, but not hard.

Good luck!

Here's a better story!

My niece was also deemed peanut allergy, mild at her one year appointment, I can't remember why they tested (reaction?) but now at 4 she is no longer allergic, and eats peanut butter everyday!

The egg whites allergy can also go away, as it did with my best friend's son by age 3. Do not despair!

@LulaBee: Well, if you've been giving her peanut butter this whole time without any reactions, I'd say it was a false positive! If she was truly allergic to peanuts, I think you'd know by now with how often you've been giving them to her!

@Adira: I hope so. How can we find out if it's a false positive? I'll ask the nurse when she calls me back.

@LulaBee: I think if she was really allergic to peanuts, you'd be seeing a much stronger reaction, especially given that you've given it to her a bunch! I think you may have gotten a false positive.

@LulaBee: Don't panic! My youngest has a peanut allergy and everyone else in the house still eats peanut butter. TBH, I don't wait until after she has gone to bed to eat it either, though I do try not to eat it in front of her, just because I know she'll want some. I'll wash off my mouth after I eat it, but our allergist says it's pretty unlikely that she would have a reaction from something that I've eaten. When DD1 has a PBJ I just make her wash her hands and face immediately after she's done. Our allergist recommended this book and I've found it very helpful: https://www.amazon.com/Food-Allergies-Complete-Depends-Hopkins/dp/1421408457

@2PeasinaPod: @Adira: she hasn't had a reaction to peanut butter that we know of. Her reaction to eggs is vomiting (LOTS of it). When she started solids we gave eggs and pb often- so I'm not sure what she was reacting to. I didn't know there could be false positives. I'm waiting on the doc to call me back... I also suspect she has a mango allergy and I'm wondering if that was tested.

Luckily daycare is peanut free and I've let them know about the eggs. I send her lunch and snacks so it shouldn't be a problem...

@LulaBee: Also wondering what her reaction was when you gave it to her. They're hesitant to do skin and blood tests for allergies that young because false positives show up so often.

As an aside, my LO has an egg white allergy and a tree nut allergy. He's not allergic to peanuts, but every other nut out there pretty much. I think it's sometimes harder to understand because you don't think of other things that have nuts in them, like pesto. It has pine nuts in it and LO is allergic. I would have had no idea had it not been on the sheet his allergist gave us.

With that said, it is manageable. You just have to be diligent about letting everyone who cares for her know. I pound it into day care's heads that he can't eat any nuts of any kind. I usually send in his own snack (they provide snacks), and tell them to err on the side of caution.

He is outgrowing his egg allergy. He's 4 now, and we're going to be doing an egg challenge in the new year. I'm excited for that since that will bring a lot back to the table for us. Breakfast foods are especially hard there!

Lots of luck, and please let me know if you have any questions.

@LulaBee: What was her reaction when you gave her peanut butter? Allergies can come up as false positives, so if you've given her peanut butter before with no issues, I wouldn't stop now!

As far as I know, it cannot be passed through breastmilk (or if it is, the results will be much more mild). My son is allergic and I ate peanut butter the entire time I was breastfeeding him.

@Adira: Thanks- that makes me feel somewhat better. I think I need to call and get an epi pen. We had just given her pb the day before they called to tell us she has an allergy! I had no idea it can stay in your mouth for that long... ugh.

I wonder if it can be passed through breastmilk?

My youngest is allergic to peanuts. We were told that peanut allergies are always treated as severe allergies because every exposure tends to be worse and worse.

But don't despair! It's totally manageable! We still have peanut butter in the house and my husband still eats Reese's! The key is not to eat them around your LO. The peanut protein can stay in your mouth for hours (~4) after you eaten it, even if you brush your teeth, so we only eat things with peanuts after the kids are in bed (or early in the day at work).

We avoid anything that says "Contains peanuts" or "May contain peanuts" or "Made a facility that processes peanuts" since peanut allergies are so scary. And we always have an Epi-Pen on hand, but we've never had to use it yet (LO is 2).

My 12 month old was just diagnosed with an egg white allergy and a peanut allergy. We suspected she was allergic to eggs which is why we requested a blood test but the peanut allergy is a surprise and I'm kind of freaking out. I haven't had a chance to talk to her doctor yet, but I know the peanut allergy is mild at this point.

People keep telling me it gets more severe as she gets older. Any advice? Suggestions? I sent our jar of peanut butter to work with my husband, and will be bringing all the pb cups to work with me... I'm so worried for her!
