I was so afraid with DD1 about nipple confusion and what not. I do think I'm more confident with DD2 to give her a paci earlier knowing when she already had enough to eat.

@junebugsmama: thanks!!

@pinkcupcake: so true. I kept offering a paci to DD1 and tho we weaned just before 2, it was worth it haha!!

@FaithFertility: so my milk is in and I've been able to limit bottle only to night time too.. It's true, I think at night she is too lazy to work on her latch. Hopefully latch will get better and I can go off formula eventually!

@faithfertility: oh, i totally understand that boob/bottle can be preferred one over the other. i just meant that a pacifier *instead of* a boob OR a bottle would seem very different, since you don't get any milk or formula out of a pacifier!

I've EBFed 2 LOs and they both used soothie pacis.

With LO1 I was adamant about not using pacis, but she was a terrible sleeper (even in the hospital) and we gave her one out of desperation (night 2). She had zero problems nursing and was quite happy with her paci (when she wasn't hungry).

With LO2, we introduced the paci a little later, but she didn't have any problems either.

Do what you need to do to survive.

@KayKay: unless your my moose and want the bottle ebecause it is easier and you just want milk to pour down your throat...I don't think it is/was nipple confusion either, he just got pissed he had to work for milk on the boob

We started the pacifier on the 2nd night I think out of desperation because they were inconsolable. They gave them upon their own around 3.5 months and never picked it up again. They're still nursing at 2.5 years so it didn't negatively affect that. Congrats on your new LO!!

I'm not convinced that babies have any confusion between food source (boob or bottle) and pacifier. I know they're tiny, but it seems like it'd be super obvious that, not only do they look & smell different, but that food source = FOOD! :)

We used a paci from day one with both boys and never had any issues. My boys were boob monsters. My first was a crazy paci addict too until with went cold turkey at 2.5 years old. The second boy will take a paci but is kind of meh about it.

I think supplementing by bottle is a bigger impediment than occasional pacifier use. When supplementing early on, I would recommend using a supplemental nursing system instead of a bottle. It's not just to avoid nipple confusion or bottle flow preference; it also helps with stimulating your milk to come in.

I would only limit in the early days (first week or so) to encourage your milk to come in. With my first, we battled bad latch and I ended up with bleeding cracked nipples so I was terrified of the same thing happening w #2. I let him use a paci almost immediately and I think that's what took my milk almost a full week to come in. Once I let him nurse 24/7, pumped constantly, and took fenugreek and blessed thistle, my milk came in almost immediately.

But - I also think after milk supply has been established and baby is gaining well, its prudent to offer a paci if you don't want to become a human pacifier. We stopped and now my almost 6 month old refuses to take one and I'm the only one who can soothe him

My daughter had them after screaming all night in the hospital. She did have trouble bf and we gave up.

My son took them and bottles from the start, I had health issues and planned to wean right from after colostrum. But honestly he could latch all the way until I fully stopped making milk weeks later, despite being given bottles. All this to say I really think it depends on the baby.

@T.H.O.U.: @theotherstark: I am trying! She just gets annoyed at the boob too! My milk is starting to coming in now, so maybe she will like the boob better now that something is coming out. I think she preferred paci bc she had that before boob at NICU.

@Mrsbells: Yep, my LO didn't have nipple confusion or nipple preference. He had boob and three different kinds of bottle nipples all with in the first two weeks of life and drank without issue. But, to @T.H.O.U.: @theotherstark: point if the goal is to BF and your milk hasn't come in yet the paci use is one less opportunity for the baby to be on the breast.

@snowjewelz: my doula helped me formulate my birth preferences and care for baby instructions. Trust me if she hadn't done a rundown I would have likely just said no formula since we wanted to give BF a try. And then of course we had to supplement because my milk took 5 days to come in!

@snowjewelz: we gave both kids pacifiers in the newborn phase. For both of them it did not have any impact on breastfeeding. Not all kids get that nipple confusion or other issues with switching between breast, bottle and pacifier

If you are really trying to get your milk to come in, I would be keeping her at the breast as much as possible. That may be almost non-stop! Every suck will help stimulate not only milk coming in but your supply.

I'm not saying dont do the paci, but I would really limit it in those beginning weeks.

I say if the paci helps comfort her, I would let her have it.

My older DS never took a paci and was not a good nurser. I ended up EP for him.

My younger Dd was given the paci in the NICU for 8 days while she was on TPN and couldn't have my pumped milk or formula. She grew attached to the paci but once I was able to start feeding her she latched and nursed like a champ. She takes bottles of pump milk ok too but only from my mom who cares for her when I'm at work. At 8 months old she's almost weaned off the paci by herself. She almost hates the paci now starting about a month ago when she was teething.

My DS had one from day 1 in the hospital that the nurses gave him. He was a bit early so was in observation for the first 24 hours. We supplemented at first since he was small but went on to have a good bf relationship, and we decided to keep one bottle per day (of pumped once there was enough).

We brought a pacifier to the hospital (though the hospital also gives them out) and used them from day 1. I asked the pediatrician as well as the lactation consultant and both said it was fine to use since we had no latch issues. She's 7 weeks and we're still using it (like your first, my first never took one this early).

Eta; bottles on the other hand have caused us dome issues with breastfeeding but that's mostly a flow thing.

@FaithFertility: haha! It's def hard to break whatever she learned in NICU for even 2 short nights! I just keep saying to myself this is survival mode for now; hopefully once my milk is in I can direct her back to paci and boob... Otherwise I see lots of pumping in my future!
