@tinypiglet: I just wanted to respond in case my experience was helpful at all. Xander (4.5 months now) had (and still has) a long awake time. He'd be up for about 2 hours and then maybe take a short catnap. And in the evenings, forget about it! He'd often be up from 5:00 to 9:00, sometimes later!

Around 10 weeks, he just started falling asleep earlier on his own. I didn't change anything really, he just naturally started sleeping earlier and sleeping longer at night.

Now at 4.5 months, he's in bed around 7:30, gets a dreamfeed (sort of, it often wakes him) at 9:00, sleeps until 5:00 a.m., gets fed again, goes back to sleep until 7:00 and is up for the day. Then he's usually awake for 2 hours and takes a 20 minute - 2 hour nap, depending, and this continues throughout the day, but he's always in bed around 7:30! Hope this helps!

@shopaholic: I'm curious if you found a resolution to this, or if it just took time for your little one to get into a routine that worked. My 4-week old is also generally awake all afternoon/evening until almost midnight, unless we go out with her in the sling or car seat (both will put her to sleep). She's not a huge fan of the swaddle so I'm kind of at a loss as to what I can do while we're home. Wearing her around the house is one option, but she clues into that after a while if I sit down which means I can only get a few things done while I'm wearing her.

I'm trying the swaddle again right now (just put her down for an attempt at a nap) and have my fingers crossed, but since you were discussing this a few months ago I'm curious how it all worked out... thanks!

@shopaholic: Some babies are just more awake than others, but you could always try swaddling for all sleep to sort of get her into a routine? Like swaddle=sleep? S just loves her hands by her face so she'll punch herself or flail around & wake up. The swaddle helps to keep her confined and warm, which make her sleep better. Hopefully it will work for you too!

Do you swaddle at all? S sleeps much longer stretches when swaddled. I don't swaddle her for all her naps, but I do if I need to get something done & need her to sleep a while.

@SleepyMonkey: If she sleeps in the day, then she wants to party all night. :/

@travelgirl1: :) I guess that's a positive way to think about it! Yeah, I've tried baby-wearing her at home, but she has to be at least a bit sleepy when I put her in. If she's awake, she fights it and pushes off against me with her arms and legs. And if she is okay in it, I still can't sit on the sofa. I might be okay on a chair, but she still wakes up most of the time unless I'm bouncing her.

Oh and do you wear her at all? That might give you your hands back for a bit and she might fall asleep while being worn...

A did that too but more at night... I do remember the 'don't you dare sit down or I'll scream' phase... We must have walked 10k every night just in our apartment. I think she knew I needed to lose baby weight :) As @SleepyMonkey: says, if it has no ill effect on her mood then I think you're okay.

before 10 weeks, my LO could stay awake for that long and have no ill effects on her mood. i say if she is happy and sleeps fine at night, then its ok.

So I know it wasn't that long ago I posted about how to keep a newborn awake longer. lol. Of course, NOW my problem is getting her to sleep!

K is 3.5 weeks old and the past week she's been getting increasingly alert and so difficult to get to sleep! She's actually always been difficult to get asleep AND stay asleep. But the past several days, she will go periods of 5-6 hours awake in the afternoon and/or evening!
i.e. Today I have fed her 4 times and she's been awake since 11 am till now 4:30 pm. She may fall asleep for a few minutes in my arms, but ANY movement and she's up, blinking, then staring at me. I think the longest period she's slept today has been maybe 20 min.! Is this normal so young?
She wants me to hold her all the time, but I can't sit down (except for now, I've discovered, bouncing on my yoga ball). She doesn't like sitting in the swing for more than a couple of minutes, unless she's already passed out completely when I put her in it. Now that she's asleep, I'm off to go buy a bouncy chair to save my poor arms and back!
Is it crazy that she can stay awake for such long periods already?!
