This is a really helpful chart that I referred to a lot when DD was younger: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11GHo4keUb2TVJUlSL1kD6HQcEgaNFBmzoQoOzcpcyas/edit?hl=en&authkey=CPXE1bsO&pli=1#

@ellewoods84: In the beginning at that age when I was just starting EASY, I would just change Xander's diaper after nursing as his "activity" and then if he wanted to sleep, I'd go ahead and let him! But like I said, he was really good about just falling asleep on his own, so I never really had to figure out when he was tired or how to help him sleep. If he was tired, he'd just pass out no matter where he was. Other babies need a lot of helping falling asleep, so you may find it easier to just nurse to sleep for now!

Yeah I have been loosely trying to do EASY, and I think it has definitely helped with our nighttime routine, just trying to get daytime figured out! Thanks again.

@ellewoods84: I tried to do EASY at that age (Eat, Activity, Sleep, You) so when Xander would fall asleep nursing, I would wake him up for a couple minutes, but he was also really good about falling asleep on his own when he was tired. If your LO isn't, I'd probably be inclined to just let her sleep if she falls asleep nursing! Good luck to you! <3

Oh okay! Well, that makes sense! Sometimes after nursing, she falls asleep right on me, but I was thinking I should try to entertain her or keep her awake for some stretch of time. Maybe all long that has just been pissing her off! Thanks for your help.

@ellewoods84: Yep, it includes the time nursing! So if you nurse for 45 minutes, you may find that any additional awake time is zilch!

Yeah, I have been reading that too! So, therefore, does that 45 minutes-1 hour include time spend nursing? Or does that time begin after she is done eating? Thanks for responding!

I feel like it's common to hear that babies are only awake for 45 minutes to 1 hour at that age. Though Xander would usually be awake for 2 hours and be totally fine. Sounds like since your baby is so fussy, she probably needs more sleep!

Hi All,
So, I have been lurking big time lately, but that must stop because now that little miss is here, I have some real questions!

Baby is 5 weeks old (today!) and EBF. She typically goes around 2-3 hours between feeding (sometimes 1.5-2 hours depending on the day). How long is too long for a newborn to be awake between feedings? Sometimes she is awake the entire time, which would be cool with me if she wasn't a little miss fusspot for a majority of that time. After a certain amount of time of being awake, should I be trying to put her to sleep? I try to soothe her between feedings (she isn't acting hungry, just fussy) by holding her, rubbing her, using the swing, using the bouncer....so maybe she is so fussy because she is overtired? Anyways, I know every baby is different, but how long is too long to be awake between eating?
