Congrats!

In the first few weeks it was definitely every hour especially in the evening!

I think pretty much anything is "normal" as long as he seems satisfied after his feed and he is having 6-8 wet diapers and 1-2 poops in 24 hours. Hang in there, you're doing great! It gets so much easier.

@Espion: yep! I just fed fed fed. It helped me establish an awesome supply and I'm still nursing a year later-- never made it this far with my first, and I had huge supply issues with my first baby. It's utterly exhausting to cluster so much, but I think it's worth it.

@Espion: so maybe you are still switching from colostrum to milk at this point and the nursing times will go down. That was my experience this time anyway. With my first, though, she nursed a lot longer and soemtimes on both sides, so it can vary widely i suppose. I think it all sounds normal though so dont think your breastfeeding journey is doomed!

@Little Misters Mom: I'm going to see a LC tomorrow just to make sure we're on track. He tends to clamp down on my left nip, but his mechanics seem good. I think I need to troubleshoot positioning.. (Someone needs to come up with breastfeeding lyrics for "What is Love? ... Baby don't hurt me, baby don't hurt me...no more"

@oliviaoblivia: That's what I've been doing. My fear is that I did the same with E and he never stimulated milk production for a variety of reasons. I'm scared I'm missing a window to pump like crazy to make up the difference, because I wonder if I pumped more right off the bat with E, I would've had a better supply. (Baby being more efficient than the pump was totally not the case for E.)

@SleepyMonkey: It started changing to curd-y spit up on day three, probably more on day 4? I feel full-ish in the mornings but never engorged.

@MK0180: @kes18: Another huge problem is that my maternity leave is only four weeks, culminating in a work trip where I'll be away from the baby for four days in a row. I am already scared that my BF-ing relationship is doomed from the get go. I'll start pumping and fight for it, but I think it is going to be tough.

I fed my baby anytime she cried that early. If they cry, feed them! Mine did regulate to longer intervals around 2mo- by then it was about every 3 hrs during the day. I wrote down the times I fed her and noticed a rough schedule- i still fed on demand but I knew when to expect it.

So I think it sounds normal. I never got really too engorged. They got big the morning my milk came in but otherwise I never had much of an issue with it.

Can you feel your breasts before and after a feeding? they should get softer.

Mine nursed up to 30-40 m before my milk came in and then after that she'd nurse about 20m.

This sounds like DS when he was born. He nursed constantly! Sometimes he could go an hour in between feedings, sometimes 20 min. He would nurse 20-30 min at a time. He was a hungry boy - it did get better when my supply started to regulate itself.

The first few weeks I was nursing for 6-8 hours a day. Just plan to have your boob in his mouth book stop for the next while. Don't watch the clock, watch the baby.

Yep, first two weeks we nursed almost non-stop. It was hard but I do think it helped establish a good supply. One thing that helped calm my fears was having a lactation consultant come to the house. She weigh DS before and after nursing so I knew he was getting a lot. She also helped troubleshoot his latch and my soreness.

@Espion: I am actually quite glad my boobs aren't engorged much this time around. I don't feed my LO before it's not 2h before the last feed started. I just make sure she'll not still be hungry after each feed (by burping and then reoffering). Then she'll happily go 3-4h between feeds. She takes what she needs and so will H. Hugs

@Espion: it drove me crazy how the nurses kept telling me "crying is a late sign, watch for other cues" because my son was constantly showing hunger cues until my milk came in on day 3. Then he had a tiny bit of that newborn sleepiness cause he was finally satisfied.

All good advice above one other thing nursing sessions are beginning to beginning so say he starts at noon and nurse on the left until 12:20 and then on the right until 12:30 then he wants to nurse at 1:30 that's considered 90 minutes between sessions. This confused me for weeks bc I thought it wasn't normal that I wasn't getting 2 hours between sessions. :)

@avivoca: okay that is also reassuring! When we were in the hospital, he would nurse 10 to 15 minutes each side then sleep for two hours. It almost seems like I brought a different baby home!

@kiddosc: @sarac: @lady grey: @Kemma: awesome! Okay this all makes me feel better. I don't want to try to regulate him on a "schedule" per se, but I do want to make sure that this is all par for the course for a successful breast-feeding relationship.

Just wanted to throw it out there that sucking / nursing is one of the most soothing activities so even if your little guy isn't hungry as such, nursing will still make him feel good :-) It also keeps him close to you which in turn keeps him safe from an instinctive point of view.

Also, La Leche League has awesome mother-to-mother support forums if you're ever looking for really expert advice.

At that point, you should be nursing just about day and night - absolutely on demand. He will regulate to a more tolerable schedule before too long, but at this point, you need to nurse as much as he wants to build your supply.

@erinpye: I guess a corollary to this is did you feed your LO every time he/she cried? It's my first instinct, and it obviously takes him off the ledge pretty quickly. But I feel like the threshold between hunger cues and crying is either short or nonexistent. And if it has been less than an hour since they ate, should I try other soothing techniques instead?
