@Cole: He was 7 lb 4 oz at birth, and fit in them until 8 or 10 weeks? They still fit at that time, but he was saturating them so we moved up to BumGenius 4.0s :)

@Cole: 30 should be plenty! Our situation has been that we're working with 16 split between upstairs and downstairs so I can never wrangle them all up at once. In terms of fit, LO was born 6 lbs 4 oz and went down to 6 lbs and they fit him well.

@Cole: we loved our BG newborn diapers (http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?products_id=2793) so I'd go with those. Also 30 will be plenty and DS was a big baby 8-3 and he wore them until he started daycare at 5.5 weeks. He probably could have worn them a bit longer but I wanted to just start daycare with what they'd be using everyday.

@grizz: Thanks! I just saw a review online and the woman was livid because her baby only fit in them for 2 weeks, I assume you didn't have that issue? Do you know about how long they lasted?

@pelikila: Thank you, that's really helpful. If genetics are any indicator this little girl will not have skinny legs but it's nice to know she most likely won't grow out of them before the rental period is up.

@Cole: C was born at 6lbs, 10 oz and wore them since day 3 until he was 8 weeks old. He still fit them at that time but I went back to work and wanted his daycare to start getting used to the one size pockets we wanted to use for the majority of the time so I switched him at that point but really he probably could have stayed in them until he was about 3 months old. He had skinny legs and that probably gave him a little longer in them than other babies so I'd go with a comfortable 2 months.

@spaniellove: Thanks! I admit your post had me panicking a bit! I am hoping that having 30 available to us will help. I do like the idea of fewer things to fuss with.

@avivoca: Thank you! I don't think I will bother adding anything into the mix for those first few weeks unless it turns out to be a disaster but it is good to be reminded that I don't have to have it all figured out immediately.

@pelikila: Thanks! It never even occurred to me that it might be trickier to wash the AIOs. How long were you able to use the kissaluvs size 0? I also like the idea of having fewer aplix tabs to worry about.

We did a BumGenius newborn diaper rental and looooooved it! Totally worth it! We did it through Twin City Diaper Co. Several other bees have as well.

I loved doing fitteds and covers for the newborn stage. We used 20 kissaluvs size 0 fitteds and 5 XS Thirsties covers and we washed every day to day and a half. The reason I liked fitteds for the newborn stage is getting the wash routine just perfect isn't nearly as difficult for fitteds as it is with microfiber or fleece that tends to hold the soap more so you have one less thing to worry about. The BG AIOs I had wouldn't have fit my newborn until he was about 2 months old so fitteds were a better choice for us in the early days. I never used/saw a BG newborn AIO so I can't speak to those.

@Cole: It's really trial and error. I've never used the Kissaluvs fitted diaper, so I can't speak for them. As a NB, I found out rather quickly that my baby didn't like cotton diapers (she would scream when she wet them). It's better now, but I changed a lot of diapers. I liked the NB AIO, but I only had one so I couldn't use it a lot.

I started using inserts and Thirsties covers and that was much better. I have two Flip inserts, six BG pocket inserts, and 6 gDiapers inserts that I use with my covers and that system really works for us.

If you want to go with the AIO and try the fitteds, you could purchase fitteds/prefolds and covers separate. You should be able to sell them if you don't like them (I see them all the time on my local cloth swap page).

I also recommend talking to the cloth diaper shop about all of your options. They might offer a class to teach you about them and you would be able to see/feel all the types of diapers.

@Cole: If you have the option of 30 Bumgenius NBs I would totally go for that! I planned on doing prefolds, fitteds and covers and ditched that so fast. It turned out that the last thing we wanted to deal with during crying diaper changes was all the extra parts.

@avivoca: The AIO are newborn size, would you lean towards doing those? I can't figure out how I will know if I like the fitteds and covers best or the aio. I guess it's only six weeks and most people seem to like one of those options...

I didn't do a diaper rental, but 30 diapers sounds like plenty. I had a stash of 36 NB prefolds, 4 Thirsties XS covers, 6 Thirsties Size 1 covers, and one BG Newborn AIO. I also had 10 BG AIO, but I didn't like the fit on baby.

The AIO (if they aren't the NB size) will be very big on a newborn and small baby. When she was little, I liked using covers/inserts because they were trimmer. I also like my fitteds (I have three GMD workhorse fitted diapers) because they are trim as well.

I've never done newborn diapers just older baby.

But if they are willing to do the AIO at the same price, those are going to be less headache (no folding, all one piece, etc).

I think we have decided to cloth diaper. I found out that a local store has a great newborn rental program, it's $96 for new or $60 for used diapers for 6 weeks, extending your rental is $12 a week. You get either 30 Bum Genius AIO or 30 Kissaluvs fitteds and a choice of a few different covers (but I failed to write down how many covers and which brands, Thirsties size 1 was one of the choices.) Plus, you actually get your deposit back at the end as opposed to a store credit like a lot of other places I have found.

Does this sound like a good idea? From what I read 30 diapers should be a pretty decent newborn stash right? Would you go with the AIOs or the fitteds and covers? I think I was leaning towards prefolds and covers with a few AIOs thrown in for a bigger baby stash if that makes a difference.
