I did the reclined nursing position. I just held her normally but leaned back in my rocker when feeding her. I also sometimes pumped for a minute before it was time to feed her and it helped!

@Orvis18: I did that this morning and it seemed to help, no coughing -- made a mess! Milk everywhere!

My LO is 12 weeks and still chokes on my milk almost daily. I have a bit of an oversupply though and it comes out too fast for him. You could also try hand expressing a little bit before you feed him to see if that helps. I do this when I'm engorged and it helps a lot.

@Penny Lane: haha - this happened yesterday! Poor guy got squirted with milk in the face, then later on he peed into his face!

Thanks ladies --- good to know it happens, it's a little scary for a second but he seems ok after I hold him up!

Reclined feeding is good for this. It helps so gravity isn't pulling it down their throat they actually have to suck it back

Happens to us every feed still, and has since the beginning. My LC thinks its because my milk comes out too fast for him to handle.

Like @sorrycharlie: I just let him cough and sit him up if he seems panicky and wait til he's ready to go again.

The most annoying thing I find is that he often comes off right after let down so my milk squirts all over his face and he doesn't like that much!

This happens to us, too. I let her cough and calm her down if she panics (sometimes after coughing she will be unable to catch her breath and it terrifies her).

I also burp often because she swallows air with all the gulping = has pain later!

Perfectly normal! It still happens to my 4 month old every now and again. I just let him cough until he's ready to continue, usually takes no more than 20 seconds. I dont usually pick him up to burp him.

Congrats on your new arrival :-)

Hi all.... My son is a week old (almost) and ever since my milk really came in, he occasionally starts choking/coughing on my milk --- you can tell he's gotten too much. I hold him up immediately and burp him (sometimes I get a burp, sometimes I don't).... I have been trying to recline a little more while feeding him also.

Any other advice? My boobs don't seem super engorged, he's just drinking too fast I guess.

Is this just normal - him trying to figure this out as much as I am?

Thx!
