It can sometimes get infected, yes. But that would be more than just the "crusties" described. It would have redness and swelling with it, which may be what your sister's baby had. Usually the redness and swelling would be towards the nose below the lower eyelid a bit.

My son had a clogged tear duct. We would wipe away with a warm damp cloth several times a day and would massage the goop out. Additionally I'd squirt breastmilk into his eye, which helps a lot. It resolved with a few weeks.

Hi! I'm actually an ophthalmologist. It is just that the duct that drains your eyes and runs into the nose is blocked. It happens in 5-10% of babies and opens on its own with growth by age 1 in 90-95%, usually much earlier. Ointment doesn't help as it isn't an infection just your normal eye secretions that build up because the drain is clogged. Some docs recommend massage as pp said to try to open up the membrane that is covering the opening of the duct into the nose. My 4 week old has this as well...I don't massage because I don't really think it helps. It's icky but it should go away on its own with time!

yup!! and DS still has them at 6 months old, but not AS badly.

My ped said that it's a clogged tear duct and it's VERY common. Eventually it will open up more. You are supposed to massage it to help it open up; start at the corner of the eye and gentle massage down the nose line. :) do that everyday multiple times a day.

DS is 6 months and still gets crusties, but it's not nearly as bad

Mine didn't but my sister's LO does. She got drops because her tear ducts are still plugged. It's getting better, but it was pretty gross and scary for awhile. She was just 10 days old and she had this yucky yellow puss coming from her eyes and they were swollen shut. My sister almost lost her mind.

@leelee: Oh! What kind of ointment do you use? I asked my ped about using ointment and she said to just wipe with a warm wash cloth. Maybe I should bring it up at her next appointment next week?

Mine had them pretty bad, luckily my sister is an optometrist. She told us to use a warm wash cloth to wipe them away (it opens up the ducts) and then have us some ointment to put on her eyes. DD is 10 weeks now and it comes and goes. Whenever it comes we use the warm wash cloth and ointment and it goes away within a day.

My 5 week old wakes up every morning with yellow eye crusties! Some mornings it's so bad that she can barely open her eyes. :( My ped said to just keep wiping it with warm water/cloth. Did your LO have yellow eye crusties? When did it go away?
