thanks for all of the replies. Started a bedtime routine last night with giving him a bath and putting on his warm pjs and then swaddled and rocked him in his dark room and put him down. It was great. I think he still needs to wake up to feed every two hours sometimes, I'm lucky and get three, but last night i was able to get him to go back to sleep right after eating. He usually wants to stay up after one of his feedings for a few hours and then feed again . I'm going to try and keep this routine going.

I think they all do eventually figure this one out on their own -- they have to, right? But in the meantime, it might help to reinforce daytime activities during the day -- lots of eating, activity, noise, and short naps -- and nighttime activities at night -- sleep and dimly lit rooms.

Honestly, the thing that helped the most was waking LO up during the day. For the first few weeks I woke him up every two hours to nurse and he figured it out quickly (and started sleeping decent stretches at night). With my first LO I just suffered and he figured it out on his own...so that could work too.

We did the usual - make noise during the day & keep it dark and quiet at night - but it didn't really get better until we started waking her up from naps. I know people say to let babies sleep but next time around I will wake the baby up more often from the beginning.

I agree with @Mrs. High Heels! Go about your daily routine during the day and keep it bright. We talked normally, turned on TV, vacuumed, etc. At night we only use dim light and talk quietly. We don't do anything to stimulate her at night. Also make sure you establish a bedtime routine so your LO knows it's time for bed. We also don't let her sleep longer than 3 hours at a time during the day.

@autumnlove and @mrs.high heels: thanks for your replies. I think I'm going to just relax and hope it sorts itself out.

I was so focused on this with my first baby, and tried to keep the days bright and loud... and the nights dim and dark...

But with my 2nd, I just didn't have time to really focus on it and he grew out of it around 5-6 weeks.

All that to say, try not to stress and they'll eventually figure it out! I did everything "wrong" with my 2nd and he sorted it all out on his own.

My 4 week old son will generally sleep all day and then have two long awake sessions at night. Is there anything I can do to help him switch his days and nights or is it something he'll grow out of. Thanks
