This was a giant headache for us that I didn't research before birth, and am now kicking myself for.

Our plan was to put DD on my insurance plan since I don't have to pay a premium. It turns out that she was actually covered by my husbands plan automatically for 30 days, since he was born before me in the calendar year. Therefor his insurance was her primary and mine was her secondary. I only learned this after my insurance denied all of her claims. Ugh!!!

Now we're in the process of having everything resubmitted and trying to figure out payments. I have et to pay anything and she was born September 1st. Headache for sure.

@ladyfingers: Does you husband have an online "employee portal" type deal at his work where he can log on and make changes to his insurance online? My husband and I both do with our employers and so we were able to actually do it all ourselves online once LO was here and we had her social security number.

We were in your same situation – so LO was covered under my insurance when she was first born (automatically), and then my husband added her to his plan within 30 days of her birth after we got her social security number.

@FutureMrsMcK: I've actually thought about it, but it's my tendency to just do everything myself and then act like a martyr about it, so DH really needs to handle this himself. Otherwise I'll make a big deal about it and we'll end up getting in a fight lol. We'll see how long it takes him to take care of this next part before I involve myself.

(and honestly, part of me when he said "I can't just go back down there I have work to do" wanted to retort, "It's not my fault you didn't get the proper information the first time." But I've been nagging him a lot lately so I'm trying to cool it!).

DH was given paperwork by HR to add him on maybe a month before he was born. He was covered under our employee + spouse plan for the first 31 days, and the paperwork needed to be given back to HR by then.

When we went to the pedi in that first month I just gave them my insurance card. We didn't need his birth certificate for ours but we did need his SSN.

Honestly, if I were you I would call HR or the insurance company myself and find out exactly what you need to have when. I've had to do it a few times with DH's HR woman.

LO was covered under my insurance at birth. My benefits department advised we had 30 days to notify them of LO's birth. I did not have to provide a copy of her birth certificate and I don't think I had to give them her social security number.

@LivsMama: Yep I figured they'd need the SSN also. It just didn't make sense that we had 7 days to provide all that to HR since I know it takes longer to get that stuff. It makes a lot more sense that we have 7 days to tell them, and then more beyond that to get everything in. Thanks!

oh btw-in addition to that document (the interim BC from the hospital) you will need LOs SSN when it comes.

He should be able to get all of this information via email from his HR department.

I don't recall the exact process to get him added on. My husband's company provides our insurance and I am insured under his insurance as well so I don't know anything about dual insurance. I imagine you can choose which plan the baby is placed on or you could do both plans. As far as signing up, you wait until after the baby is born and just use the insurance card for whichever one you are going to use for your first visits to the doctor. We didn't need any special documentation to sign him up as I haven't even gotten LO"s birth certificate yet and he is 3 months old (this is because I haven't applied. it doesn't take very long to get it if you apply right away). DH just called HR and filled out a form to add him on. This might depend on your insurance company though. If you apply in the 30 day window the insurance starts retroactively from the "life event" which will be his birthday so they will pay for the early visits as well.

My one warning is to BE SURE TO DO IT IN THE 30 DAY WINDOW. I have a friend who forgot to do it and they wouldn't allow her to add the baby on after the 30 days had passed so she is having to pay more for a separate plan until open enrollment at the first of the year :/

Hope that makes sense!

@LivsMama: Ok, yeah it might be easier if he just calls the insurance company. He's rarely in the office so asking him to go to HR is apparently a huge hassle for him.

Typically, you have 7 days to inform the insurance company of the child's birth, then have a certain period after that to provide a birth certificate. We had to send something from the hospital that was basically an interim BC until the real one arrived.

With our insurance, Liv was covered immediately from the day she was born. Im on DH's insurance, so she was placed on his. I dont know anything about them being on your plan then switching over, but you might be able to do that. We just gave the pedi our insurance card, and they submitted the claims repeatedly until it was accepted (many times, the hospital and pedi will submit a claim and it will be deined during the time they are adding the baby. You dont know this, because they keep resubmitting on their own. Its common.) to alleviate the situation, Id put the baby on whomevers insurance it will ultimately go on.

I can tell you this though. Have DH call his insurance company ASAP to figure it out. Even with all of our ducks in a row (Im a planner) it took us longer than expected to get everything together and be positive it was all taken care of. It requires a lot of info. Definitely take care of what you can now.

We are in the same scenario as you.

LO is covered under my plan for the first 30 days of life (even though she won't ultimately go on my plan). Then she is going on DH's plan.

We're going to be putting LO under my husband's insurance policy, but I'm confused about that period of 30 days after he's born. From what I understand, the baby is automatically covered under... somebody's insurance for 30-31 days after birth. Is it mine? DHs? And do we basically just give them our insurance card at the pedi until he has his own insurance?

Also, what was the process for you to add LO to your insurance?

DH finally got the information from his HR department, but he's telling me that they said we have 7 days to add him and they need a birth certificate. And I told him that sounds totally wrong because it takes way longer than 7 days to get a birth certificate -- right? He admits he was confused, but was dismissive, saying, "Well, we have until February to figure it out." I'm adamant he needs to find out what's required of us and when sooner rather than later, because what if LO comes early? Grrrr. He really stresses me out sometimes. He just shut me down, saying, "Well, I can't go back now, I have work to do." It took him like 3 months and much nagging to finally go to HR and just get the premium rate. This is so frustrating. But now I think I've gotten very far off topic :)

Anyway, what did you have to do to add LO to one of your insurance plans, and how long did it take, documentation required, etc.? I just need to hear other people's experiences to quell my curiosity until I find out exactly what we need to do.
