My newborn is only 2.5 weeks old and it has been a constant eat sleep eat sleep cycle. He's only awake & content for maybe an hour in the late morning and then again in the evening. Outside of that, he only wakes up to eat or complain about a dirty diaper. Our daytime feeds are frequent, as in every 1-2 hours. At nighttime he usually does one 4 hour stretch, then it's usually 2-3 hours between feelings after that initial 4 hour stretch.

@MrsLilybugg: gah - sorry you're going through it, too!

@ms.line: My first was like this, too but we just assumed it was because she never kept anything down due to the MSPI!

@mrsrain: Thanks! :) I can't wait for more alert times. We have about two day right now as well. This time last week I thought he would never be awake, he's so sleepy! I've seen an LC a few times, and she thinks (As do the two peds we've seen) that he does have a tongue tie, but it's very small and not worth correcting. She said it's basically up to me if I want to get it done based on the pain I can tolerate. My first had a tongue and lip tie and after we got it fixed it was still painful to feed her until her mouth got bigger. So I'm hesitant to have this one fixed, but at the same time I'm tired of being in pain! Luckily it seems to be getting a little bit better. I think I'm going to give it until early next week and then make a decision.

My second is three weeks as well. She is eating every 2-3 hrs on average, but for a total of just 40-60 minutes per day (overactive letdown issues here :bummed: ). My first ate a whole lot more often...probably every closer to 1-2 hours.

DD is 4 weeks...we are pretty much on an eat sleep cycle! She has some alert time in the morning which I try to use to "play" but she's still just so young. She eats 2-2.5 hrs start to start during the day...

I have an 8 week old. At week 2 he ate all of the time. At least every hour. By 4 weeks he started spacing them out

At 3 weeks it's totally normal to have an eat sleep eat sleep routine. DS is 3 weeks, too, and has an alert period twice a day, but can otherwise be found eating or sleeping! He averages around 12 feeds a day (can be breast or bottle).

Have you seen a lactation consultant about your nipple pain?

Edited to add: clearly as a second time mom you know about nursing a newborn! Could just be that this one needs to nurse for comfort a little more. I do think it's still normal, though! Good luck, I hope it gets easier!!

My DD is almost 5 weeks and I feed her on demand - usually about 10 times a day. I could be wrong, but I think them wanting to eat all day is pretty normal, and feeding on demand is good for their growth and your supply.

I feel your pain!! I feel like LO always wants a boob in her mouth when she's awake. It's getting so exhausting! No advice just commiserating!

Now that DS (almost 3 weeks) is coming out of the sleepy newborn phase we're having a hard time stretching feeds out. I feel like I'm feeding him all the time! The only time he makes it two hours between feedings is at night. This is great for my supply, but not so great for my sore nipples! I know it's still early so I'm not too worried about it, but I'm just curious if anyone else is in the same boat. It feels like it's beyond normal cluster feeding, rather just poor management on my part? I'm having a really hard time keeping him calm while he's awake and my mantra is "throw a boob at it!" Which leads to a cycle of eat sleep eat sleep.

My first was also a voracious eater, but she had major reflux/MSPI issues and we were always struggling to keep food in her so my perspective on "normal" is a bit off!
