@Meridian: I sit on the floor next to her swing so probably 3-4 feet from her. I leave it on until a few minutes after she's asleep. Sometimes I have to keep turning it on or I'll leave it on a good 10-15 minutes after she's asleep. I don't use it too often anymore but in the early days, it was everyday. I also would have some other white noise going once I turned the hair dryer off.

We were always in the living room. My LO never naps in his crib. He either naps in the mamaroo or in his stroller or the ergo.

I spent hardly any time in the nursery. I spent most of my time in the living room, watching tv. I worked hard to set her down as much as I could, because I didn't want the daycare transition to be traumatic. We kept a PnP nearby!

The first 3 months of my daughter's life were spent in the living room during the day where we nursed/cuddled/napped all day long. I held her for pretty much every nap and I make no apologies for it! Nights (from like 6 pm when the witching hour started on) were spent in our bedroom. I'd nurse her and hold her while she slept until about 10 pm when I'd put her down in the napper portion of the PnP next to my bed.

We didn't really spend any time in the nursery until 4 months when we transitioned her to the crib and she became a distracted nurser.

My general philosophy is (especially for the first 3-4 months) is to follow baby's lead and do what you have to do to get them (and you) to sleep the most. If that's holding them, co-sleeping, bed sharing, whatever. You can't spoil a newborn. That time is so fleeting and will be over in a blink of an eye. There's plenty of time later on to get them to be independent and sleep in a crib!

PS My daughter loved the blow dryer - I found an app called white noise baby that has a blow dryer sound - much safer!

@Meridian: Agree with @dolphin, let him sleep wherever. My son was still taking ever nap on me at that age. At least in the master bedroom he could fall asleep on you and maybe you could slide him over to the bed, so at least maybe you can get up to pee, etc.

@Meridian: I would say relax on it a little bit and enjoy your time rather than stressing about keeping him in a dark/quiet room. For the first 3 months, our lo slept in a bouncer, swing and bassinet (at our bedtime). The bouncer and swing were both in the family room. I hardly left that room unless it was to go upstairs to go to bed those first 3 months. :)

Until 4 or 5 months, we let my daughter sleep wherever she would sleep, especially during the day. This includes taking her for "walks" in her stroller around the living room. And many naps while I was holding her. I watched the entire series of the West Wing on Netflix that way!

Starting at 4 or 5 months, we started to be more intentional about crib naps and nighttime sleep. Now she's 15 months and has slept just fine in her crib for a long time.

Living room! My first LO was glued to the boob around the clock, so I felt like I never left the couch. And crib naps? Forget about it! Luckily, LO2 has been much better with crib naps and doesn't want to nurse constantly.

At that age we mostly did naps in the baby K'tan or stroller. I don't remember when, but it wasn't till much later that we could nap well in the crib. She started sleeping in the crib at night at 8 weeks, but we were still co-sleep napping or doing anything I could for daytime naps for many many months.

Worry about crib stuff later, just enjoy him for now! He's only going to be small for a short while, work on crib time a time or two a day, but keep your mental health in mind too! I'd so be snuggled in bed, watching TV and napping! We didn't start finding a routine until later on, anything pre-6 months is just survival, especially with a preemie!

He's so young, I would let him sleep wherever! I wouldn't worry about the crib right now. That can come later. My daughter is 4 months and still napping in her swing in the living room with all the house noise going on around her. She starts out her night there too and then we move her to the rock n play.

I've also found the hair dryer helps so much in getting her to sleep. Maybe try louder white noise if you aren't already doing that. Hang in there. It will get easier!

Yeah, you've got to just survive this part. If he likes to be held, can you get out and let him nap in a carrier? I spent most of my time in those days either out of the house, or with my daughter hanging out on the couch with my laptop or a good movie. Those early days are hard enough, you need to not feel trapped too!

We spent most of our time in the living room. We had her activity mat and rocker chair set up there and I would bring the bassinet in there as well.
