Yes my LO slept all the day...maybe 30 minutes of awake time most of the time and then sleeping 3 hour stretches and then kind of a longer wake time during her "witching hour" and then a longer stretch of sleep for the night...this went on for weeks and weeks. We didn't get on a regular routine/schedule until LO was
2 months and even then her awake times were short compared to other babies her age...some babies are just more sleepy...her doc says let her sleep as much as she wants as long as she is sleeping well at night.

my first did that, she settled into 2-5 hour long naps and still slept at. She just needed more sleep than average, still does!

My LO slept all day as well. It wasn't until he was about 6 weeks old that he started working himself into a pattern, he would stay up for about 1.5-2 hours at a time.

Don't worry about getting her in a schedule, they choose their own schedule at this age so it'd most likely be a waste of energy! If she wants to sleep, go ahead and let her sleep :)

oh, and do make sure, like PP's said, to differentiate day and night. When LO gets up in the morning, we go to his changing table, open the curtains and say lots of "good mornings", sing songs and get excited for the day. It's helped him learn that this is our morning routine. For naps and night time the curtains are closed and he's swaddle so he seems to know the difference pretty well.

At the beginning, until at least 6 weeks, I say let her sleep how she wants. Newborns aren't on schedules, but as she grows she will find her own.

My LO sleeps all day too!

@Mrsdaredevil: I think it's funny how as parents we just can't help but worry! I got one day where all LO did was sleep, eat, poop then repeat at night. I was ecstatic!!!!

I just let LO sleep whenever and as much as she wanted during the first few weeks.
It took 2 months or so to get her on a "schedule."

My theory is that I think as you 'do' more stuff in the day, the baby understands that as the interesting time to be awake. And other than that, let the baby do what it needs to do and then when it does get a routine of its own, try to support that routine to be as consistent as possible. But I think the routine will take a couple months to start IMO.

For at least 2 weeks my babe would only be awake for what seemed like 20 minutes per day. Eventually he started having longer stretches of awake time. I write down in my log book when he is awake to try to get the pattern. He is 5 weeks and he now seems to have a 2-awake-periods pattern, at roughly the same time, but even still, every few days he changes that. It scares me when its different, but he seems to be just fine on those off days, so I'm trying to not worry.

Good luck!

PS. I'm sure light/dark is important too, asI know that the sleep/wake hormones are afected by that, so maybe try to mke it light in day and dark at night.

I always just let LO nap when she wanted to. I figured she knew what she needed when it came to sleep more than I did.

is she sleeping at night as well? do you have to wake her up to feed her, or does she wake up to eat herself? when she is awake is she alert or still groggy?

my lo worked out her schedule on her own - I just tried to follow her cues as best I could. she did it around 9 ish weeks?

Newborn sleep is SO confusing, so I hear you! Are you worried that she's switching her days for her nights? If so, you should make sure that you wake her at least every 3 hours to eat. Also, try to play with her and keep her alert and awake for a little longer after each feeding, so that she knows that daytime is for playing and nighttime is for sleeping. Hope this helps! I have the opposite problem that my LO appears to be allergic to the concept of napping!

My newborn basically sleeps all day. Usually after a feeding, she is awake for 30 minutes and then sleeps until the next feeding. The cycle continues like this.
Because she basically just falls asleep and sleeps for so much of the day, I don't consider it "napping."

Should I be more concerned with putting her on a schedule? How soon should I start giving her designated nap times? What was your LO's daytime sleep routine like?

(can you tell im feeling a bit unsure of myself right now?)
