@LovelyPlum: We knew we were having a girl, but we went with a grey cheesecloth and matching bow headband. The pics turned out really well, and the grey totally could have been used for a boy, too.

This is the one I ordered:

Thanks for the suggestions! We haven't decided which to get yet, but this was all really helpful. Also, I love the idea of giving her the cloths to use again :)

As a newborn photographer, I have to say my most used cheesecloths/swaddle wraps are grey and white which I usually use on a fuzzy grey or white blanket respectively. After that, would probably be turquoise and a pale yellow. I think all work amazingly no matter what the sex of the baby and those are the shots that get purchased the most as well. Just some food for thought :) Oh, and I also agree that gifting the cheesecloth after as a thank you is a lovely idea. I had a friend do something like that for me when I was first transitioning from family photography to babies and it was super helpful.

Donating to your friend is a great idea. For our newborn shots (girl) we did cheesecloth in green, brown, grey, and cream (all gender neutral colors) and added cute headbands, shoes, or legwarmers for color. We also did one in a big basket outside on the grass that turned out to be my favorite.

Also whole foods diapers are plain white if you like the shots of them in a diaper. Our photog had a bunch of fake headbands (basically just a flower/bow on a string) because they were much easier to place on a newborns head and tuck the ends down than to readjust the headband.

I like the cheesecloth too - buying a set of 3 and donating them to your friend is a great idea. Definitely order them now because ordering the cloth is not something you want to be dealing with the day after giving birth! Our photographer just did naked pics, no props at all (except my 2 year old's toy school bus which he would not put down!) and I loved them! I do sort of wish we'd had a cloth. Next time!

My photog didn't have a ton of props either. She's a wedding photog ;). She did have some baskets though & some great back drops!

I'm trying to remember... I had one headband, a hat that my nana knitted, a little witch headband, and one hair clip. We used a grey cheesecloth that my photog had on hand. I also had a lace romper.

The naked baby pics turned out to be my favorite!

I blogged her newborn pics two years ago!

I would get the 3 colors - then you can donate them to your friend as a Thank you for taking the pics =)

I personally wouldn't do a hat - on a girl or a boy.

I like headbands on girls though!

We had been wanting to get newborn pictures taken, but for a while there, it didn't look like it would be in the budget. Well, a friend of ours who is an amateur photographer has generously offered to take them for us. We're so excited!

Now to the dilemma: she doesn't have newborn props, and I'd like to do at least one shot wrapped in cheesecloth. Easy enough-I can get it off of Etsy. BUT, we are Team Green. So, now what? I don't really want to wait to order until the baby is born, but I'm not sure what to get. It looks like I have a few options:

Buy a set of three colors, get a headband separately
http://www.etsy.com/listing/167246014/newborn-wrap-collection-of-3-rustic?ref=shop_home_active_24

Pick a few colors from a list, buy headband separately
http://www.etsy.com/listing/128626209/pick-any-3-newborn-wraps-baby-wraps?ref=related-0

Buy a cloth/headband set in gender neutral color and leave off the headband if it's a boy
http://www.etsy.com/listing/129261704/newborn-gray-cheesecloth-wrap-and-pink?ref=sr_gallery_41&ga_search_query=newborn+cheesecloth&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_ship_to=US&ga_page=4&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery

Out of curiosity, how many colors do you think I'll need-is one enough? And should I try to find a hat for a baby boy?

ETA: I'm liking this baseball hat, maybe: http://www.etsy.com/listing/150718693/baby-boy-baseball-beanie-great-photo?ref=sr_gallery_16&ga_search_query=newborn+baseball+photo+prop&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_ship_to=US&ga_ref=auto6&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery

HELP! I'm lost!
