@wrkbrk: are you able to get in touch with an IBCLC to get some help with nursing? It's just so totally normal for newbies to want to be on the boob all the time!

@Cherrybee: @Truth Bombs: @SweetiePie: thank you for the kind words :) I think he's catching up now bc he wants about 1/4 of an ounce of pumped milk every 30 minutes and we are going back today for a weigh in. I'm so tired. Haha. Thanks again.

@wrkbrk: Awww don't feel bad. The first few weeks are rough while you learn what they need.
Since you're BF I recommend Kellymom.com. She covers all of the cluster feeding and growth spurts.
I also recommend downloading the wonder weeks app! It explains why your infant goes through certain fussy periods and it's actually because of huge developmental "leaps". It makes the cranky crying more bearable when you know why and that they will end up even cooler at the end of the spell :-)
I'll share a story - my first night home (he was 5 days old) he woke up crying every hour and I couldn't figure out why. I even called my Pediatricians hotline and they were like "well, it's a baby. They cry" in a nice way.
Milk wasn't fully in yet and I wasn't opposed to formula so we were doing bottles of formula. At 3am my husband ran to a convenience store to get 2 other kinds of formula because we didn't know what else it could be.
Well, turns out I wasn't putting the bottle nipple in his mouth correctly. So everything was dribbling out onto his bib. I starved him for about 24 hours before my mom came over and showed me how far back the nipple has to go in his mouth since they don't know how to swallow (just like with BF you need a deep latch).
I felt awful. BUT we figured it out and he is now a chunker :-) So the first few weeks are scary but it will get easier and easier every single day as you learn. And it also gets more and more fun too :-)

@wrkbrk: just wanted to tell you not to get discouraged. Your milk might have just been slow to come in. At our first ped appt my LO was down 12% (to 5 and a half pounds, he's tiny already so it was concerning). I told my ped that that morning was the first time I woke up engorged (aka my milk was finally fully in) so he didn't suggest supplementing. We went back the next day and LO had gained 5 ounces in 24 hours ☺️

@wrkbrk: I'm so glad its all resolved. No more getting up every 15 minutes! The first few weeks are so, so hard but it doesn't last forever and you come out the other side relatively unscathed, I promise.

@2littlepumpkins: You were right - first pediatrician's visit and he had lost 10% of his birth weight. :( I didn't know the crying over and over was for hunger and not his pacifier because when I tried to nurse he didn't take it ... anyway, long story but now I am supplementing pumped milk and he sleeps without the paci. Thank you for your comment!!

And thank you to everyone else who posted! This first week thing is not for the faint of heart!

We use tommee tippee pacifiers, and they stay in better. LO pretty much just chomps on so soothees now. I wish wubbanubs could switch out for different pacifiers.

We didn't introduce a pacifier for the first few weeks but I think that would definitely fall into the "normal" category - which, for newborns, is a VERY broad category. Good luck!

Normal and I actually didn't like the soothies for that reason. They popped out very easily.
We switched to Dr Browns pre-Vent pacis around 6 weeks and I really wish we had done it sooner! Since it has more of a bulb it stays in better. It took maybe a day for him to get used to the new shape, but once he did it stayed in way better!

I'd say normal, but agree with prior poster that he may be looking to cluster feed which helps get your milk in.

Our second and third nights, lo wouldn't be put down without waking and the only way I could settle him was to bf again. We slept in shifts holding him for the sake of my nipples. Once he was able to feed more during the day (and once we got home to the RNP), he lengthened his feeds out.

Congrats!

Sounds pretty normal to me. My lo won't wake up immediately if it falls out but personally I only call it inconsolable if nothing we're doing works to calm lo down.. We are still sleeping in shifts here too. (October birth.) It kind of sucks but I like having a somewhat guaranteed period of sleep. Every 15m is a lot though, not gonna lie! Sometimes ds will seem like he's dropping it but if he keeps doing it over and over it probably means he's hungry instead of wanting the paci.

Normal. I like wubbanubs because they stayed in a little better by laying the animal on her chest. I also tried to sneak it out after she was asleep.

Yup, I would say normal. Twins are almost 12 weeks old and DS freaks out more when his pacifier drops out of his mouth than DD does. They both do it but it seems like DD can self soothe some of the time. I'm waiting for the day they can hold their own pacifier. I can put their hand on the pacifier to 'hold' it but not sure how long it will stay.

@wrkbrk: Congrats! I gotta go check out your birth announcement!

@wrkbrk: It just occurred to me that 3 days old is usually the time you read about babies cluster feeding and Bees lamenting that they've been up all night being used as a human pacifier. I bottle fed my baby so we went through the dummy dropping instead...... but that adds further weight to my argument that its totally normal.

@wrkbrk: Many congratulations on your new arrival.

A few months before E was born, a nurse was sacked and prosecuted for taping a dummy to a newborns face in hospital. We were disgusted, of course...... then we had a baby and, God, I was tempted!

@Cherrybee: Thanks for your response! I have never been around babies before having him on Monday so I didn't know if this was WAY abnormal or just something people dealt with and maybe didn't mention much. I would love for him to only wake for feedings!! Maybe in a few weeks it will be better. DW and I have resorted to sleeping in shifts. :/

Yes, this was us! It got less and less over the weeks but we were still up every couple of hours for several months. I decided broken sleep was better than no sleep because popping the dummy back in was easy but getting her back to sleep without was impossible. It got harder when we moved her to her own room at 10 weeks because then j had to get out of bed to put the dummy in!

DS is 3 days old. He sleeps great with a soothie but screams if it falls out of his mouth ... Which is about once every 15 minutes all night overnight :/ I mean, he is inconsolable. If I pop it back in, he immediately settles.

Is this normal? It's not a wake to feed every two hours situation and sleep in between. We literally wake up every few minutes all night long ... Should I not let him have the paci?

Thanks!
