@Crumbs: I did the same. I could buy three times the amount in the US in better quality than I could buy locally. My mom ships me a package at least once a month.

@winniebee: @LivsMama: We're not having a shower. I live abroad and have gotten a few things already from friends when we last visited (although I was just in my first tri back then) and family have sent us stuff. But we're not expecting anything else, although it would be nice. I'm also not sure if people have typical baby showers here. I have not seen a registry - ever.

We are planning a "The end of life as we know it BBQ" close to my due date but it would be really awkward to send invites to friends back home and add registry info in it (although someone suggested it).

Ya'll convinced me to buy a few more things! I was hoping to do laundry once a week tops! I'm in for a reality check, I know =)

The Toys'r'Us here don't carry baby clothes and the few (2 stores total) that do don't have much variety so, I'm buying them online and having my Mom ship them with the other things she's bought. If just a few more footed sleepers (on sale) can save me the stress of rewashing, then it's definitely worth it for me.

Think of how much laundry you'll be doing! It never hurts to have a little extra... DD was in NB sizes for almost 3 months so I was glad I had bought more.

i only have like 1 whole outfit each for my babies in premie, and a few newborn. and a few 0-3 months. less than you, i'm in trouble! lol. i just think it's SUCH a waste of money to buy clothes. even though i know they need them. but i figure i won't really go out much for the first 3 months. i'll just buy more (even though it's a pain) if i decide what i have isn't enough.

We also barely have any newborn stuff. I'm not too worried, since I think she'll spend a lot of time in just a diaper, onesie, and aden + anais swaddle, since it should be pretty warm here by the time she's born. If we run into trouble, we can always run out to the Babys R Us right near our house and pick up a few more NB sized clothes.

@winniebee: FYI, I could be wrong, but I've heard that the Gerber stuff runs almost a full size small, so NB Gerber onesies are more like preemie onesies. We have some of the Gerber 0-3 month side snap shirts that are way smaller than any other 0-3 month clothes that we got.

My mom kept saying that she'd never wear newborn & she was over 7 lbs at birth but was in newborn sizes for 6 weeks! Mostly carters but a few other brands. I probably had 8-10 newborn outfits which was plenty but I did need to buy more newborn sleepers because I only had 2. I think we ended up with 4-5.

LO was born at 7 lbs 14 oz. I think we owned maybe three pieces of clothing in NB size. Gerber tends to run really small, so we just used the 0-3 month onesies, and he lived in those pretty much all the time. It was big for maybe a couple weeks but then fit fine.
You could always grab an extra pack of onesies or something and just not open it and keep the receipt if you have a big baby. Or you can send your DH out to get something- even if he's never bought baby clothes before, saying "hey, find a pack of onesies in NB size" shouldn't be too challenging (and any salesperson can help him with it).

tt depends on the size of the baby. We had a July baby and she was in her newborn stuff until she was 3 months old. (Born 7lb10oz and 21.5 inches long.) She did also start fitting into her 0-3 month stuff in that time too. We got quite a bit of newborn sized stuff at my shower, so mabe wait until then and get more pieces after that if you have to?

I have a few newborn "outfits" in case we go out somewhere in the first month, have 5 carters onesies (gifted), and registered for some gerbers side snap onesises (long and short sleeve) in size NB. Also registered for A&A swaddle blankets and a few sleep sacks in size small. I also have a few hats and a few mitten sets. I haven't had my shower yet, so may get a few more items as gifts, but I don't really plan on getting anything else in NB sizes. Baby is due in May.

I would try not to worry about it since your baby isn't due for a while still and you may get other items as gifts for your baby shower (when is your shower)?

If you're like a month away from the birth and still feel like you need some NB stuff, then you can get the clothes then. You may want to leave tags on some NB stuff, though, because you might want to return if your baby is on the larger side.

If you're going to stress about it, you might as well just buy some clothes so you're not worrying.

Personally, I think what you have is fine, depending on the size of your baby. My LO was in newborn clothes for 2 weeks, so for us it wouldn't be worth it to buy more clothes. Also, there's going to be things that you forgot to buy or didn't know you needed, so your husband will probably be running out after the baby is born anyway. My hubby was running to the store every other day for a while!

@Crumbs: We also had a summer baby and figured she would be big (9 lbs). We had enough to get us through 2-4 weeks of NB stuff. Really after about 2 weeks she could start fitting in 0-3 stuff. During the week I would suggest 2-4 pairs of footed PJ like sleepers (great for day and night), 2 "outfits" of pants and shirt, and then maybe some basic onesies and even gowns (great for the hourly diaper changes).

My LO was 7lbs and it took her 5.5 weeks to grow out of the newborn clothes. We really didn't have a lot of clothes for her because I was afraid she would grow out of them so quickly. I think we have 5 onesies and a 3 sleepers and that was more than enough.

Oh,, and yes, the carters NB sizes look preemie, but they do fit. Hard to believe, huh?

My LO lived in the newborn sleeper/sleep and play outfits for the first several weeks. I think we had 5-7 of those which were enough. I would recommend another pack of those and of onesies. I was skeptical of newborn sizes too but they ended up working for us for almost two months. You can always do the bigger sizes baggy and that would be fiine too.

I think you might want a few more things. Our LO was born at just under 7lbs and the newborn stuff definitely fits much better and more comfortable looking. Before he came, I thought the Carter's NB onesies looked impossibly small, but they are a perfect fit. Better to have a few extra onesies than not enough. I'd probably just buy an extra pack just to ease my mind if I were you :)

I had 5 Carter's nb sleepers in fleece that my winter baby wore for about 2 months. I do laundry every 3 days, so I always had enough. He was about 7.3 pounds and 19 inches long.

For a summer baby, i would want the same amount, but of the lighter cotton.

After really sorting through our baby gear, I realized that I don't have as many clothes for the first few weeks as I thought I had. Most of our gear is 0-3 and 6-9 months.

I'm actually a little annoyed by my Mom right now because she tried lecturing me about not buying anymore clothes. She bought a lot of the baby clothes when we last visited but it was all at once, she's never actually sat and organized them. She said that all of her friends are telling her to tell me not to buy so many clothes when the baby will outgrown them in a month. My response was, what do you propose the baby will wear for that first month??!!

This is what I have in newborn size:

2 NB Little Me Sleep & Plays
2 NB Gerber Side-snap long sleeve cotton shirts
1 NB Sanpibasic Side-snap sleeping gown

5 NB Carter's Side-snap short sleeve cotton shirts (that look preemie size, they may not even fit)

4 Aden & Anais Muslin Swaddle Blankets
2 Ultimate Receiving Blankets in cotton flannel
8 Receiving blankets
3 mittens, 3 caps, 8 socks, tons of bibs

We're expecting a summer baby. 5 pieces of NB clothes doesn't sound at all too much to me - it sounds too little or barely enough. I was planning to go by the side-snap shirts, socks, hat, mittens, and swaddle since it's summer but I didn't realize the 0-3 months shirts were so much bigger than the NB size.

I know I'm stressing about this, but having my husband go to the store and buy something last minute is scenario I'd like to avoid. He has not bought a single piece of clothing on his own for so long that it will stress me out having to instruct him.

What do you think? Do I have enough clothes to get me through the first few weeks? Do I have too little? I know it's just a guess for now, but considering she's born on time, should I buy a few more NB sizes?

(I know can just use the 0-3 clothes that I have and let them be baggy, but what do you suggest?)
