My second son was almost 8 lbs and he went from newborn to 3 months clothes by 4-5 weeks. He is now almost 12 weeks and his 3-6 months are fitting perfectly right now. Gap and Carters both tend to run true to size. Gymboree has always run big...almost a whole size too big but I like their quality. I would just get 3-6 months clothes b/c they really outgrow newborn and 3 months clothing pretty fast. I don't mind that it's a little long b/c it makes room for a big diaper. Haha! :D

My LO is 6 weeks old and she still wears NB. She was only 19 inches long though (and still is). I wish I had more newborn because 0 to 3 months is HUGE on her!

My two girlfriends who are small had very long babies and both were 9+ lb babies. One has a very tall build Hubby but the other has a very small hubs. I know the one with small hubby was measuring on time. it's very hard to tell till they come and i think their length can make a big difference. neither of their babies wore NB clothes that long. Id say get a few outfits just in case but focus more of the money for NB in hats and accents she can wear for a good while. Does she have any sweet bonnets of bows yet?

Both of my daughters wore NB for at least the first 4 weeks. My second wore them almost until she was 12 weeks old. She is pretty petite in build. We had to stop and get some premie outfits for her when she first came home. I would have a few neeborn sleepers and onsies since it will be in December when she comes, and then go and get more if you need some.

I only read a few of the other posts, so hopefully I'm not too repetitive!

DS was born weighing 9lbs 5oz. We only had a handful of newborn outfits and he was able to wear them for 2-3 weeks. I think it was all sized for up to 10lbs but he was able to wear them a little passed that. We had tons of clothes in 0-3 months and, even though they were a little big at first, he grew into them quickly. Carters clothes run smaller than Walmart or Target, so we got more use out of a couple of things. I wouldn't buy many newborn outfits. I would see what you get as gifts and go from there. You can always send someone out to pick up some smaller clothes after your LO is born.

It sounds like you have enough newborn clothes. We only had 2 newborn outfits because I swore she was going to be huge. She was 7lbs 3oz. She fits perfectly into Carters newborn right now. We also have some 0-3 sleepers from Gerber. Those are too big and were making me nervous because she was really swimming in them. I ended up going out and getting a couple more Carters newborn sleepers so, now we have 4. I just do laundry a lot. :-)

@krsmall: I just looked, they have a section for special sizes, newborn up to 7 pounds. I never used that size in Baby Gap, so I can't say if it also runs TTS.

Some GAP stores have newborn boutiques. When I lived on the UWS of Manhattan, the Gap by me had one. I'd call and ask the store manager.

I wish I didn't just open up Janie and Jack's sale section...uhhh ohhh.

Hard to say - you can always stock up on more sizes after birth. DS measured right on until 30w when he fell to 25th percentile. We never expected he would only be 5-5 and 17.5 in at birth though! He wore preemie the first few wks as well as newborn onesies and aleepers and then all newborn til now as well as some 0-3 At 5 wks he is just about 8 lbs and over 20 in and is just now outgrowing NB sizes though sone NB stuff still fits him. He got so many summer 3-6 month sizes that he probably will never wear (we live in Boston and by end of Sept it's cooler) Point is you just never know how big thu are going to be so in my view it's Better to wait.

IME, Baby Gap runs true to size, Carters and Ralph Lauren run small and Janie and Jack runs big.

I've noticed every brand is a little different. I feel like carters rns small. Little me, kissy kissy and Janie and Jack run big. I had a preemie, 4 lbs 8 ozs an he's outgrown carters preemie but the little me, Jack and Janie, and kissy kissy are
a little big. I think you would be safe getting a few newborn outfits for at least the first 2 weeks. You may want to get
a few different brands since the sizing seems to vary between brands.

Our 0-3 has fit for the first 3 months, and we have a lot in this size. (Most things that say 3 months seem to be the same size as 0-3 in my opinion). He's 2.5 months now and I'm thinking of giving them one more week. At first the stuff was a little bit big, but not crazy big. I thought it was cute. The pants I would just roll the waist bands, and anything long sleeve or long pant I would roll the cuffs too. Now the onesies are tight like muscle shirts. When I brought him to school last week the kids actually remarked, "Now his clothes fit him!".

Luckily we only had 3 newborn sleepers, which he outgrew very quickly...maybe 3 or 4 weeks.

Now, if you and your DH are small people, you will likely have a small baby. My friend's baby is 2 months older than mine and they are the same size right now. (Hers is a girl, and she and her DH are small people, where we are tall people).

Thanks you guys!

I know usually you get a lot of gifts...But we have a special situation...We live in South Florida and our families are up north or in the South, and I don't even think I'll get a shower because it would be impossible to get everyone together. And here in Florida I really only have 1 really good friend. Everyone else is spread out everywhere, so I'm kind of anticipating that we're going to have to supply most everything ourselves.

I noticed the same with Carter's! They're huge. I think they run big because even their newborn sizes aren't teenie tiny.
You'll have your final ultrasound to see sizing and breech at 36w right? You could always wait until then and see since they'll be able to tell you approx weight and length.

My LO was 10lbs 8oz and 22inches long at birth and still wore NB clothes for 2 1/2 weeks. She started into 3-6 at about 9-10 weeks because of length but is almost 12 weeks and can still wear some of the 0-3 stuff.

My good friend had her daughter 4 weeks after me and she was 6lbs 11oz and still only wore NB for about 3 weeks.

It varies a LOT from baby to baby, regardless of birth weight. I would say get a few sleepers (LO lived in the fleece ones as a NB) and a few onesies and a couple pairs of pants in NB and that will be more than enough.

LO was 8 lbs. when she was born but fit perfectly into newborn clothes.

I wouldn't personally buy too many clothing items - especially not NB sized clothes. *everyone* gives you clothes (seriously, LO has a large 4 drawer dresser and it's FULL of clothes - and that's just the NB-6 months stuff! We've only bought her maybe 5-6 outfits, the rest were gifts).

Both our girls were 6 lbs when they were born. Lala needed NB or premie and Mei Mei could wear NB or 0-3. Lala stayed in very small sizes until about 6 mo. old whereas M. blew through infant clothes. Now at 4 mo she wears 6-9 mo. Luckily we only bought a few tiny outfits for her!

My LO was born at 7lbs 80z and 21" long she was in NB for probably 1 week and by week 2 they were getting snug length wise. But she grew really fast. She grew 2" in her first month!
Coming out of the hospital she was definitely too small for 0-3 sizing.

I would take it easy on the NB and 0-3 month clothing. Just because you never know how big/tall your baby is and how fast s/he will grow.

I have SO much NB clothing people bought us that she never wore. And the same looks like will be happening with 0-3. She lives in sleep n plays! Stock up on those on sale!

She's 8 weeks yesterday and already in 6month sleepers because of her length.

I am confused about newborn sizing, and how much of it I need. I have been buying a lot of stuff from Baby Gap and they don't have a newborn size, they just start at 0-3 months (7-12lbs). I like this size, it makes me feel like she'll wear them from birth to 3 months.

But at Carter's they have newborn, which is like only up to 8lbs, and then they have 3 months. There is a HUGE variance between the two.

How much true "newborn" stuff do I need? And let's just say she's 8lbs or a little under (she's measured perfect to the day, never ahead, so I'm not expecting her to be a really large baby)
will the 0-3 months or Carter's 3 months really fit her?

Right now she has 4 or 5 sleep and plays in Newborn from Carters, and a couple of onesie/leggings outfits in Newborn. Everything else is 0-3 months from BG, but the onesies - especially the footed PJ ones - look HUGE!!!!

Any advice is appreciated!
