@catomd00: I agree.

I think it's hard to get on a schedule in the early days. Around 8 weeks old DD got more predictable and we fell into a loose EASY routine.

I found that EASY/Babywise/etc all started working for LO around 6 weeks old, and most of the moms I know had similar experiences. You may just want to give it a little more time and do whatever works for a few more weeks..

Good luck!

Honestly, I think you're expecting way too much from a newborn. This probably isn't why you want to hear, but i would urge you to just go with the flow and do what makes your life easiest (and baby happy. This time is so short and ever changing. The minute you have one thing figured out and settled into it, baby will surely change again. It's frustrating but letting go and accosting it can be the best thing for everyone.

@mrs.kiwi: I think 3 weeks is pretty early to expect her to fall asleep on her own on a regular basis. A is 2.5 weeks now and definitely needs our help to fall asleep. We swaddle her and then walk or rock a bit while patting her bottom to get her to drift off. Then she can be laid down. For us,making sure she's getting enough sleep is more important now than her being able to put herself down. It gets significantly harder to get her to sleep if she's been up for too long.

@cam: yes I do want her to sleep on ge own eventually! She's done it a few times and she's 3 weeks now.. I don't think she's thaaatt sleep deprived. She oftentimes misses 2 naps that she "should" be sleeping thru per day

I was having the same exact issue about a month ago, posted about it, implemented some of the tips I got, and he has been getting substantially more sleep every day.

Are you trying to put her down on her own to sleep? I think at that point mine was still mainly napping on me or in the carrier, sometimes in the swing. If she was really sleeping a lot less than recommended I would probably ditch EASY for a bit and nurse to sleep. Good luck, hope everyone gets some sleep!

@SweetiePie: what do u do if she doesn't seem very sleepy even after the whole routine? Also what did u do if u put baby down and she started crying?

I must have read about this but maybe my brain is mush from sleep deprivation??? Lol

@mrs.kiwi: 1-1.5 hours awake sounds good. You could even try 45 mins. I remember in the early days sometimes he could only stand 45 mins awake.
Also, in addition to wake time, pay lots of attention to sleep signals. They can help indicate how much time she can stand awake.
And if you are into Babywise (I was!) you should also check out Baby Whisperer and Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. Both were saving grace for me!
Do you try to put her down in a darkened room with white noise? Many of the sleep books recommend this. It's a cue to them that is nap time.
Also a solid nap routine could really help if you don't have one yet. At that age we did:
- go into room
- change diaper
- swaddle
- turn off light
- turn on sound machine
- maybe rock but if sleepy enough put right in crib

All of those things together help signal "hey it's time to go to sleep".

I know very little about what you're already doing, just sharing things that helped us. So feel free to ignore me if you're already doing this. :-)

Also, babysleepsite.com is an excellent resource! You can browse by topic.

@SweetiePie: she's spending not too long awake when I put her down/ try to put her to sleep. Always around an hour or so sometimes less and I try again before 1.5 hrs has passed. Maybe bc even tho I try to keep here awake at the breast she does get "rest time" while eating??? Haha don't know

At two weeks old my baby stayed up for 4 hours once and was totally fine, not at all cranky. Like others have said, sometimes they just don't want to sleep. So if they have stayed awake through a feeding and rocking or being in a swing I would just try again for a nap in another 15-30 minutes.

I second white noise. I also downloaded an app for my phone and started using it very early and still do.

That typically does indicate being overtired. Tired but wired. How long is she spending awake? At that age they often can't do more than an hour to 1.5 hours. That was my downfall. I went to my ped and said "he won't sleep" and she explained max wake time and sleepy signals. Changed. My. Life.

My LO (now 4.5 months) doesn't nap...sometimes he'll sleep in the car but some babies just don't sleep because they don't want to miss the action. He's been like that since the day I brought him home from the hospital. I won't lie, it's exhausting, but that's okay.

😔 so sorry! My now 3 month old did that and sometime still does. The only advice I have is white noise seems to work for him,( I downloaded an app) as long as I shut out all other sounds and make the room dark he'll sleep...sometimes though nothing will put that kid to sleep.

my baby is also three weeks and he does the same...sometimes he is a GREAT napper, sleeping solid three hour chunks, and other times he dozes off for fifteen to twenty minutes (or just gets heavy lidded and doesn't even doze) and then snaps right awake wanting to start the whole cycle again! so unfortunately i have no tips, just wanted to commiserate. over the past couple of days the awake cycles and chunky naps have started following a semi-regular pattern so i'm thinking i may just let him go with it if he doesn't fall into a deeper nap after a reasonable period of rocking, shushing, resting in the rock 'n play, etc.

Help..

I'm trying to get my now 3 week old on a loose EASY schedule (eat, activity, sleep).. Trying to do some version of baby wise..

I know at this age they should be eating ten sleeping then eating and the cycle goes on..

But my baby will NOT sleep sometimes. She just goes from feeding to feeding seemingly alert. I try to rock her.. Or sometimes I leave her on her back In case I'm over stimulating her.. It just seems like she wants to be awake for a "cycle"!

I don't mind if it's temporary but I do want her to be on a loose baby wise / EASY schedule in a few weeks.

Any tips/stories/advice??
