Just thought I'd pop in with an update, LO slept pretty well last night, we got two three hour stretches (9-12, 1-4) and then a two hour stretch followed by another two hour stretch (5-7ish), 9-11ish) so today feels like a better day already! Ragey Baby is yet to make an appearance, so hopefully today will be a good one :-)

At that point, I was doing basically anything I could to get DS to sleep. He wasn't a super sleepy newborn - for naps required swaddle and swing most days. I remember one day where I even turned on the vaccum and let it run next to his swing for like an hour so he'd sleep.

@Kemma: I remember those crazy days.we would put her in the carrier and walk her around our neighborhood at midnight while she cried endlessly. It progressively worse until around 6 to 8 weeks and then slowly but surely it began to get better. Hang in there.

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice ladies, unfortunately we've had a pretty rough couple of days and now LO won't even nurse to sleep! I'm hoping that tomorrow will be better and I just need to keep reminding myself that this is completely normal behaviour for a newborn!

@c.sassy: agree completely--at this age do whatever works! i wouldn't even think about altering things till 3 months.

My baby didn't sleep more than a 3 hour stretch until fter 2 months. Count your blessings---and ask for help if you need it.

My baby wakes up with that "rage cry" when he is starving but still tired.

Yes, you can nurse her to sleep! It's good for both of you. You're definitely still in "survival mode" territory... for you and her. Habits don't start this early. You'll know when she gets to the point that she's really realizing how everything works. My LO is about a week away from 6 months and just in the past couple of weeks have we felt that she was aware enough for bad habits to root. My LO decided to not sleep at all in the mornings around that age. She would be awake from about 7am-2 or 3pm. However, she didn't really fuss. I suggest nursing on demand, using the swaddle (Miracle Blanket!), and gas drops or gripe water (the latter never worked for us).

Also have a 3 almost 4 week old that's going through the same thing. I haven't figured it out yet either, but here's everything we've tried:
Swing - she hates it right now
Rock n play - only works for 30 minutes tops
Pacifier - hates it, lasts for 5 minutes maybe
Swaddle - she fights it every night
Gas relief drops - have been trying these - not sure if they work or not.
Remove all dairy from your diet- I haven't done this yet, but a lot of moms from the October 2012 thread have and it's working for a few!

What works? I end up staying up with her on the couch, usually feeding her to sleep and then sleeping on the couch with her on my chest. It's not a good solution, but we are in survival mode. It seems like everyone goes through this at 3 weeks :(

You're probably fine as pp have said, but I too didn't want to have to hold or feed my LO to sleep too much and have to break the habit later. What's worked for us (and you may have tried this already) is what we've deemed the trifecta: tight swaddle (using a Miracle Blanket), pacifier and Sleep Sheep for white noise. When we forget to do any of the above, my 6-week-old will fuss a lot but when we complete the trifecta, we have a much better chance he'll put himself to sleep on his own.

There is nothing wrong with nursing your baby to sleep. You can spoil or create bad habits with a baby until they are around 6 months old according to child development specialists.

Also, I'm sure many ladies will tell you, they nurse their children to sleep for as long as they nurse. As long as you are comfortable doing that there's nothing wrong with it.

I used the breast religiously until she was 6 weeks old. Somewhere around 8 weeks it all gets better. Our Snugabunny swing was a total lifesaver.

I second the swing/Rock n' Play suggestion. I had a lot of sleep issues with my LO when she was a newborn and the swing saved our lives! Seriously. Once she was about 3 months old we stopped using it.

Have you tried a swing, rock n' play, etc.?
MAn. Baby sleep is such a stressful thing!! My LO's sleep still stresses me out and she's 19 months old!

So my LO is almost three weeks old and we're having a few issues with sleep.

LO sleeps really well once we get her to sleep (six hours straight on some nights) but most days we go through a period where LO just won't. go. to. sleep (I'm talking about a six hour stretch one day)!

I know that she's overtired and we also have some issues with wind (we're working on these) but she'll rage / cry for hours unless I feed her to sleep (which either means she's over-eaten or she then has more wind). She can also be just about asleep and then wake herself up to rage again which is just so frustrating. And when I say "rage" she stiffens herself and just shouts / cries her wee lungs out. It's heartbreaking to hear her yell but I'm still working out what her cries mean.

Do you think that I'm setting myself up for heartbreak and bad habits down the line if I do feed her to sleep at this age? I don't want to create bad habits but the poor wee thing needs to go to sleep and sometimes feeding her is all I can do!

Thanks in advance,
Kemma
