@hergreenapples: @SleepyMonkey: @Smurfette: @Katrocap: @matador84: @PrincessBaby: @ALV91711: Thanks ladies! I do feel like we are just in survival mode, but I'm reminding myself thus is a limited period of time. I won't stress about sleep habits along with everything else.

That is pretty much what we did. At 11 weeks I still let him nap in the living room when it is just the two of us. I figure it is good for him to be able to sleep with noise. At nigh time he goes in his bassinet.

I don't think you can really establish bad habits for the first 2-3 months. It is about SURVIVAL at that point, so just do what works for you guys now!

We didn't attempt any sort of schedule until six weeks when I was about to go back to work. Before that, he just slept whenever, nursed on demand, etc.

I agree with smurfette: do whatever you can to survive and get your baby to sleep. We didn't start a routine until LO was 3 months. Congratulations and good luck!

I say at this point, you do whatever you need to do to survive. During the day I would have the lights on and at night have it dark. It will help LO realize the difference between day and night.

at that age, except for nighttime sleep (10pm onwards), we let her sleep whenever and wherever she wanted to. lights on, off, talking, quiet, on someone, or in her newborn rocker. they can't remember anything right now and its too early for them to form habits. at around 10 weeks, we started doing a nap routine and put her in her crib for every nap.

Not a bad habit...you're really not going to establish bad habits that early :) That's the nature of newborn sleep and it sounds like you're doing all the right things. Honestly, at this point it's just about survival and doing whatever works to get you the most sleep. Babies' sleep starts to get more organized over the coming weeks and you can start to establish a bedtime routine around six weeks.

My LO is one week old. She's doing the expected nap for a few hours schedule day and night. My question for the hive is whether where we have her sleep matters at this point? I've just been essentially having her with me, because I'm EBF. So for most of the day and into the evening she's downstairs with me, napping in the rock and play. The TV is on, the lights are on, we're talking etc. Then when I'm ready for bed or she seems like she might be ready to do a long stretch of sleep, we move upstairs.

Is this a bad habit? Should we try to move to the bedroom around 8pm everyday and tone things down, something like that? Any other thoughts?
