I would say we really didn't have a schedule until 3 months. In that newborn stage she slept when and where she slept. Naps were really sporadic with some really long and short. We were nursing on demand but she never seemed to want to go longer then 2 hours between feedings day or night. We did use swaddles, dark room and white noise whenever we were able to. Other times we just let her sleep wherever (carseat, bouncy chair, swing, our arms). Once three months hit we started to try to get into more of a nap and nighttime sleep routine.

M never really napped at that age. Occasionally she would fall asleep for a few minutes with someone holding her but most of the time none of us slept. *shudder*.

At four weeks I wouldn't worry about routine. Just do whatever you can to get him to sleep. Use all the happiest baby 5s's!

LO was a terrible napper as a newborn. I felt like a failure because all of the newborns around me were still sleeping all the time and anywhere. LO mainly napped on me or in the car at that age. We did a lot of babywearing. Do whatever works! Routines and schedules are not only hard to establish at this age, they're also pretty unnecessary.

At that stage LO would nap usually within an hour after eating, mostly in my arms. Baby wearing helps too if you have a carrier

Swaddled and would start to get her to sleep after an hour of awake time. Hour and half at the most. There was no routine but all naps were in my arms.

At 4 weeks she slept whenever she wanted to. She would sleep pretty much every time she ate and sometimes in between feedings. She's 12 weeks now and still has no nap schedule.
She sleeps on her boppy pillow, in her swing, in her bouncer, in her pack n play, on someone or on her own. Just whatever she wants for napping.

@maybebaby: YES to swaddle, white noise, and dark room if your LO is having trouble falling asleep...I would make the swaddle as tight as you can. Have you seen Happiest Baby on the Block? I found it helpful!

at 4 weeks we didn't even attempt to get a routine in place...she pretty much nursed constantly and slept whenever she felt like it lol. she usually nursed then passed out in my arms and i held her for the majority of her naps. i spent the first 8 weeks pretty much camped out on the glider and couch! have you tried swaddling for naps? rocking/shushing/bouncing? white noise also helped.

At that age, I did whatever worked!!! I would let LO sleep on me after nursing, in the stroller on a walk, in the moby, in the swing, in the carseat...whatever it took to get him to sleep, I would do. He was only able to be awake for 45 min to 1 hour (including time spent nursing and doing a diaper change). I think it's hard to get into a routine at that age because they're still so new--it's kind of just cycles of sleep eat sleep repeat, often with fussing/crying thrown in there!

What is/was your newborn sleep routine? LO IS 4 weeks old and seems like he never wants to nap, but I know he needs it. What did your daytime nap routine look like for baby at that age? How long did it take to get them down? Where did they sleep? Approx how long awake and how long was nap? I feel like our baby is constantly overtired because I'm not doing enough to help him nap!

ETA: also, swaddle or no swaddle? Dark room? White noise?
