We have an UBV and used the bassinet a lot more than I thought we would. That being said, it was such a short time frame (first 4 months) if my stroller didn't come with it I would have forgone it and just used the car seat and infant insert.

we have the Cruz and really like it. We got a Chicco adapter so we could snap the bucket seat onto the Cruz frame. it worked out really well. So, depending on which bucket car seat you're using, there might be an UB car seat adapter you can get, which would be much cheaper than a bassinet.

We have the UBV and never once used the bassinet. LO hated it. We bought a car seat adapter and used that until she was maybe 5 months old and then switched to the big kid seat on the stroller.

@mrs.shinerbock: Haha we do live in the Heights and walk a lot, but our in-laws live in the burbs and we do drive almost daily too for errands and to-and-from work.

This is kind of unrelated, but do you know any Houston mom groups?? I'm new to the area and don't have any pregnant/mama friends, and we'd really like to make some friends with kids who live in the city. I have no idea where to find those groups though!

@travellovers: I really love the Cruz! I am kind of jealous about how easily the City Mini folds, but the fact that you can't rear face it was a deal breaker for me. LO faced me in the Cruz until about 1 year when I realized she was fussing because she wanted to face outward, and I miss being able to look at her! But, the cruz has an awesome little peekaboo window so I can see her even when she's facing out

@travellovers: welcome! We have quite a few Houston bees. Unless you live in the Heights or another really walkable area, you will probably be driving at least partway to your destinations most of the time. We didn't have the same stroller, but we never had a bassinet. We got the car seat adaptor and I loved being able to pop the car seat out of the base and put in the stroller without moving the baby when we went places. She was happy in her car seat for walks around the neighborhood too. For sleeping, we used a PNP or co-sleeper for the first 5 months.

ETA - We have the City Mini GT and love it.

we have a cruz and LOVE it! lo was an april baby and we live in the city and don't drive much, so we used the bassinet (we bought it separately) almost exclusively for walks and sleep for the first month. but then we moved her to the crib, and at some point realized she preferred the car seat (we have the mesa) to the bassinet for walks, so we stopped using it as much. but, it was perfect for that first month.

@Cole: We've definitely thought about buying a used Vista, but it's a lot heavier than the Cruz, which is why we'd prefer the Cruz!

Thanks everyone for all of the advice - now I'm feeling like we really don't need to worry about the bassinet, and we'll stick with an infant insert for the stroller, as well as the car seat, for walks during the first few months, and use our PNP for sleeping until baby's ready for the crib.

We had one and used it but I can't say we got a ton of use out of it.

One idea for you is to consider getting a used vista. At least here there are a ton of them being sold and they aren't going for a ton since people are preferring the new vista. If you want with the used vista though you could hey the bassinet and and still probably save money over the Cruz.

ETA: baby slept in a bassinet in our room but it wasn't the stroller one. If you wanted to use the stroller bassinet you would likely want a stand for it and it probably won't last very long. A pack and play or rock and play would be better bets. I liked our bassinet in our room but it was a hand me down, I doubt I would have bought it.

We also had a different stroller, but it had the option of bassinet, car seat, or regular seat. I used the bassinet for neighborhood walks with my oldest, but feel like it was more about liking how it looked than anything else! When I had DD2, we never even took out the bassinet - it used the same frame as the todfler seat, and wasn't worth switching it back and forth for the two kids. I felt like a baby kind of rolled around in the bassinet when we pushed the stroller - a car seat or seat with infant insert was more supportive and let the baby interact more.

I say save the money for something else - if you feel you need one later, you can buy it or even get/borrow a used one - many people never use them so it's sure to still be in nice condition.

This is tough since you don't know ahead of time what your baby will like. I did a combo of baby wearing or keeping LO in the car seat attached to the stroller, and at home, she slept in the rock and play or the swing. She would never sleep on a flat surface in the early days so a bassinet would have been a total waste for us. Our pack and play ended up never being used. That being said, I see loads of people with the bassinets walking around here so obviously they work for some babies. I know that is probably not so helpful, but what I'm trying to say is just get what you want and know that it may or may not work out!

Also I live in the burbs and it doesn't snow where we live - we have mild winters - and there's no way my son would have laid down in the bassinet until 8 months - he is a squirmer and loved (and still loves) being upright in the stroller so he can see everything.

@travellovers: Yes we used it pretty much since DS was a month old. The straps were still loose on him but he couldn't really move anyway and he was reclined facing us.

DS slept in his RNP, on us, or in his crib at night. My son was a colicky reflux baby so he didn't sleep a whole lot to be honest but he's always liked stretching out so he actually really liked being in his crib and just tolerated the RNP.

I searched about bassinet attachments a few days ago. They look really cute but my HB research made it seem like people bought it if they lived in the city where owning a car wasn't common and so they likely didn't need a car seat. Also, they did a lot of city walking. Made sense for me since I live in the suburbs and do need a car seat and would just pop the car seat into a stroller.

I think this was the thread where I read up on it.

I used the basinett attachment for the stroller almost exclusively until my son was about 8 months of age. It was perfect because I had a December baby in the mountains and I was able to put my son in his bunting and then put him right in and go for long walks.

For sleeping, it was always the crib.

We have the Cruz and adore it. Don't bother with the infant insert - the Summer Infant Snuzzler is like 10 bucks and does the same thing. It reclines nicely and DS slept in it just fine. He liked the stroller much better than the infant seat clipped into the frame but he dealt with it either way and sometimes the stroller was the only place he would sleep at all. We also had the UP Mesa seat and loved it too. Skip the UP organizer - we use the Britax one and it's great. The only accessory we got was the bumper bar bc you can hang toys off it (we use those windy worm toy things)

When are you due? We had the bassinet for our Vista and used it very rarely. But I had a November baby so by the time it was nice enough to go for long walks, sohewas pretty close to using the regualr seat anyway. If I had a spring baby I think I would have used the bassinet a lot.

Hi ladies! My hubby and I are looking into various stroller and carseat options, and I really need some advice/input.

The Uppababy Cruz is currently our top contender - we like the Vista but we'd prefer something lighter, and the Cruz has everything we're looking for. Except a bassinet. Do we need to buy the bassinet add-on for when our baby's a newborn? I understand baby shouldn't spend too much time in a carseat, but can we buy the infant insert ($35, compared to $189 for a bassinet) for the Cruz and recline the seat for walks? And then swaddle the baby and put it down to sleep in our pack-and-play for the first few months?

For those of you who have a bassinet that's compatible with your stroller, are you glad you have/had it or did you not use it much? Where did your baby sleep for the first few months?
