We used to do the thermometer trick with my LO. I think he grew out of it around 12 weeks.

@lizzywiz: I don't think doing the bicycle legs helped much, but it was a fun thing to do with my LO. Good bonding times :-)

My LO had digestion issues (mixed with acid reflux) we did bicycle legs to help push the air out, and she had to be burped "crunched" over while hitting the back, I could not do it over the shoulder it never worked. We did gas drops but they never seemed to work as well as other stated.

@BunnyDragon: oh, yeah, I forgot the stretching/moving of the legs! Mine responded very well to having her legs 'bicycled' (hope that makes sense).

I gave my LO probiotic drops for almost a year because he had tummy issues. He was breast fed for about 3-4 months and started on formula when I couldn't breastfeed anymore and still needed to probiotics. I also tried to stretch and move his legs around after each feeding to "force" gas out.

My lo is 2 and she struggled with this, particularly 4ish weeks to 10ish weeks. Lots of bouncing on exercise ball and she responded well to holding forward against forearm for burping and squatty position for gas. And generally lots of swinging and happy baby style 'milk shake' movements to calm her. Good luck!

some people say that around 6 weeks (give or take) is when babies can get really fussy and gas/digestive/reflux issues can show up. my LO's gas issues started hitting hard around 3-4 weeks. it was really rough and so hard to see him struggle. we tried gas drops, gripe water, probiotics...the main thing i didn't try was changing my diet (LO was EBF) because my pediatrician pooh-pooh'd the idea, although i know other folks have said eliminating dairy helped with their LO's digestive issues.

My DD is 1 month and EBF. Over the past week or so, she's gone down to having only 1-2 bowel movements per day- they're normal BF poops (runny, seedy & yellow), and they're HUGE when they happen (it's like a whole day's worth of poop in one diaper). She also seems to have trouble passing gas on her own as well. Fortunately DD is eating well, having a normal amount of wet diapers and is gaining weight just fine.

Her ped said that sometimes newborns just need to get used to the sensation of their digestive systems working, and that passing gas and poop can sometimes be distressing and/or scary for them. He recommended using a rectal thermometer to get things moving, which has worked to at least get some of the backed up gas and poop out.

Has anyone else had a newborn who had trouble passing gas and BMs on their own? When did your baby eventually figure out how to do this on their own? DD is so fussy and uncomfortable, it pains me to see her struggle! I'm going to call her ped back today to give an update and to see if there's anything else we can do to make her more comfortable, but if anybody has any advice, it would be wonderful to hear!
