Our pedi told us to wait until the umbilical stump fell out--14 days for us. We did it on our chests though!

Oh thanks! I have been doing tummy time on our chests already then I guess! But I was always scared she was trying to lift herself up since Day One if it was too soon!

I think I will wait for the umbilical cord to fall off before we start floor tummy time then. It actually was bleeding a little bit yesterday and on to her tops! :/

We started tummy time on the floor at around four weeks but prior to that she did do some incidental tummy time on our chests when we were cuddling her

We did tummy time on our chests for the first 6 weeks or so. Then we started putting him on the floor after that.

J has been the same since day 1 ! His stump didn't fall off until 4 weeks (I thought it never would!!!) so we didn't try until then . He doesn't love tummy time on his play mat yet (7 weeks) but we do tummy time with him on our chests! That prob wouldn't bother her stump!

@shopaholic: Isaiah has a small hernia and his cord stuck way way out so I waited to start tummy time until the stump fell off. We started almost right away after that. What I've heard is that you want to by the first month.

I think my ped said to wait until the umbilical cord was healed. LO's fell off after just a week though, so we didn't have to wait too long.

You know I have no practical experience yet, but my doula just sent me this blog and I thought I would pass along yet another perspective on tummy time: http://www.janetlansbury.com/2011/08/the-case-against-tummy-time-guest-post-by-irene-gutteridge/

I'm pretty sure we did it toward the end of the first week, but we weren't consistent, well...ever. (She hated it but now that she can roll over she does it on her own.) You don't have to do a lot at once, and you can always try it out and see how the umbilical cord stump looks.

I wouldn't say "she's too young" but I think its unnecessary because she isn't at the point of *needing* that extra training in lifting her neck or rolling.
LO's umbilical cord fell off at 1 week so I'm sure K only has a short time until this becomes a non-issue! :)

K has always been lifting her neck, turning it side to side, and basically exhibiting a strong neck and desire for control since Day One! I looked up Tummy Time and some places say we should start newborns with some tummy time every day right away! But also, that it might irritate the umbilical cord stump? So what to do? She is only a week old, so is she ready or too young for tummy time? What did you do about the umbilical cord?
