we didnt buy any newborn clothes at all. I am tall and expected my baby to be tall too. I startat at 3months and then 3 to 6months. And I'm glad I did that. I bought a variety of brands and some run smaller than others so it was fine.

Every baby is so different, but newborn stuff is usually wasted. Even my total midget baby (17 pounds at 1 year) barely fit it for long. The cloth diapers + her length makes her outgrow clothing faster than you'd think.

@jholler25: @photojane: I agree with J. Buy what you feel is best but keep the tags on! That way if you need them you can wash them the week you get back from the hospital.....if not: you can return them for sizes you will need:) plus IMO: I'd rather have like 7NB outfits in constant rotation than to have like 20 because I feel like...what's the point of being super cute? People can't really tell because babe will be so small and mostly always under a blanket or in a swaddle.

I wouldn't buy any yet. We got gifted all of our clothes at showers and then we got tons right after she was born too. DD is 15 weeks and has a full closet all the way up to 12 months (and beyond, already have some toddler clothes too!). Most are brand-new, but we have some hand-me-downs.

She was born in June and didn't wear most of her newborn outfits more then once or twice because it was SO HOT and easier just to keep her in a diaper or diaper and T-shirt at home.

Baby Gap will only take things back within a certain period of time, even with tags and receipts...then they might only give you the final sale price. So buy with caution.

I'd just keep it simple and avoid all outfits until they're in 6 month sizes. Just do simple sleepers and sleep and play things. One or two "going out" outfits and you're set.

@photojane: This debate overwhelmed me to the point of basically stopping all of my shopping. I'm mildly terrified of the stories I had read previously about babies who were only in 0-3 for like 5 minutes, or who wore newborn for months. We have like 5 or so sleep and plays that are newborn, and a few outfits. We have A TON of 0-3 stuff, and I'm deeply afraid I went overboard, and just my luck - she'll be in 3-6 months when she's like 10 days old or something....Whatevs.

I do know that Carters will take anything back with a receipt no matter how long it's been. And I *think* Baby Gap will too? So I've just saved all my receipts in case.

DS fit into newborn clothing until he was 12 weeks since he was pretty short. We had probably 15 onesies, 7 pairs of pants, 7 sleepers and 3 sweaters. I did laundry every three days.

DD, outgrew newborn sizes by 8 weeks. She's 4 months and wears mostly 3 month and some 6 month sizes.

most of my mama friends have told me that their LOs were in NB clothing for the first month then transitioned to 0-3 mth clothing.

We were actually gifted a lot of 3+month clothing, so I had to go buy a couple packs of nb onesies and 0to3 mth sleepers!

I find that Carter's 3m is the same as 0-3. DD was born 7 lbs 3 oz and was in NB clothes for around 6 weeks. She started wearing Carter's 3m sleep and plays (sleepers) after that and they fit, same with other brands of sleepers. She has one UK brand sleeper that fits small, it's 3-6m and she's been wearing that at the same time as the other 0-3 stuff.

She's 3 months now and wears the following:

3m onesies: most brands fit with room to grow, except for Gap, those fit her tight!
3m/0-3m sleepers (with feet): starting to get tight lengthwise, with Gap fitting the smallest
0-3m jackets: fits well
3m and 6m pants: one pair of Carter's fit her perfectly, another pair is tight around the belly. Gap's 3-6m is super tight on her belly, I've retired it.
6m rompers/overalls: fits well

Overall, I think the 3m/0-3m size will get the shortest use, at least for us. I expect that in another 2 weeks or less, I'll be retiring all her sleepers and using 3-6m in Carter's (ones my mom bought when I was still pregnant).

I have to add she has big feet and a little chunky around the tummy, so that's why the bottoms are larger. She's only 24" long, but her feet are big, so it makes all the footed sleepers tight.

My daughter ended up being 10lbs 8oz and only wore newborn for 2 weeks and 0-3 for about a month after that. She's 6 months old next week and has been in 6-9 sizes for a good month at least already and is so tall she can wear 12 months pants.

It really depends on the baby.

Every baby is SOO SO SO different so it's really impossible to know. My son was born in February too - so it will be the same season changes as your LO.

He was a small little peanut though; he was in newborn clothes for about 10-12 weeks; although there was an overlap when he was in NB and 0-3/3 mos for a few weeks. He was then in 0-3/3 from about 8-16 weeks and has been in 3-6 months since he was about 16 weeks old and he is now 7 months. Some of the 3-6 month items are a little small - such as the carters brand, but most 3-6 months fit perfectly right now. Which kind of sucks because all of his summer clothes were 3-6 and I bought all his fall/winter clothes 6-9/9-12 and they are huge on him!! He will just have to make do for now.

It's so crazy that he has fit into 3-6 for so long, as he's been right on track for gaining weight.

But he is really atypical - my nephew was always a size ahead and basically skipped over NB and 3-6 months!

I would suggest getting mostly sleepers in NB size, probably 6-8, and perhaps 1-2 outfits for outings. Same for 0-3 months. And by 3-6 start having actual outfits and more sleepers. If your LO seems to be sticking in NB/0-3 for awhile, you can always add a few more pieces.

We only had 2 NB sleepers because I thought he'd skip right to 0-3 and he didn't! I wish I'd had more.

My LO was in newborn outfits until he was 6 weeks old - he's always been long and lean for his age. We are transitioning from 0-3 summer stuff to 3-6 and 6 month fall stuff so I understand what you mean with the season transition - it's hard figuring out what to wear based on the weather! He just barely fits in 6 month clothing now but it's really getting too chilly for summer clothes.

I would suggest buying some basic newborn onesies and just a few outfits, but keep the tags on everything. We washed just one newborn outfit, brought that to the hospital in case he would fit in it (he did) and then we washed everything else the day we got home. If your LO doesn't fit in the newborn stuff, you could always return or exchange. I think we had probably 10 onesies and 8 outfits in newborn sizes to give a reference - that was plenty as we did his laundry twice a week.

LO wore newborn until almost 2 months, but he was tiny. I might wait to see how big LO is estimated to be because a lot of babies hardly wear newborn clothes at all. I think of 0-3 and 3 months as equivalents, because there is so much difference between the different brands as it is. So if you have a bigger baby she might wear 3 month clothes when she's 1 or 2 months old. Hope that makes sense...

I'm wondering mostly because the 3 month mark will be at a seasonal transition. She'll be born in February, so at 3 months it will be May and really warming up here. I don't know if I should do all long sleeves and pants in newborn to last through the cold, and then get all short sleeves in 3 months. Or, do you think I will need some cooler weather stuff in 3 months as well?

It's all a bit fuzzy, but I think we did 3M at 2 months. A lot of the stuff was called 3-6M too, and seemed like the same size. Keep trying stuff on and comparing, as sizing is really strange sometimes.

moms, i'm just wondering how long your baby was in newborn clothes. when did your baby transition into 3 months clothes (not 0-3, just 3)? i'm assuming that she'll be in 3 months clothes before she's actually 3 months old, but i'm a first time mom, so i really don't know! i guess i'd like to know -- how many newborn outfits should i stock up on vs 3 months outfits?
