Like others, we did one piece things at home and outfits when we go out.

I wouldn't buy too many "newborn" size things; LO was 8lb 6oz and 21 inches, and she only wore the newborn size for about 3 weeks. She was wearing some 0-3 things from birth as well.

As far as fleece goes, I like them for when she is lounging at home during the day. It would definitely be too hot at night though, even though we only do the light A&A swaddles.

@JessiBee: bummer- you just missed their 75% off baby legs sale!!

I had about 2-3 NB outfits that he wore out/to church, otherwise 5-10 sleepers as well.

I'm all about streamlining life - zippered cotton onesies are my favorite. LO occasionally wears fleece ones if we're going for a walk outdoors, but I think they're too hot with a swaddle. We frequently swaddle in a light flannel blanket and a diaper - especially after he's peed on 3 outfits by 9:00 AM.

I think they're about equally annoying for diaper changes so just choose what you like. We dressed LO mostly in outfits during the day and sleepers at night. We were gifted lots of clothes and I was intent on using them!

@photojane: So true so true! I'm right there with you sister!
@JessiBee: Definitely cuter as they get older for "outfits", but a few can't hurt. :)
I'm thinking separates before the umbilical cord falls off, and then sleepers or onesies + BabyLegs like some of the other moms mentioned for when we are at home (and she is being swaddled). I think get a few fleece sleepers just to test them out first. Baby might get warm and sweaty if you swaddled with the fleece and have the heater on. But you might end up loving them. I'd try out a few pieces of each before buying one type in mass.

@sorrycharlie: Thanks!

Thank you for the feedback! It sounds like pants make life a little more difficult, and one-pieces are the way to go, whether they have pants attached or not, and we just keep her more swaddled much of the time. I guess we'll get some of each, and I'll do my best to hold off on outfits a little longer. I also know people will be excited to buy us things too, so I'm not worried about the baby having only pajamas for the first couple months!

We used both, I actually found that the onesies with the pants were easier because LO kept kicking/moving while I would change her, and to get her legs in those sleepers was a pain! We got a lot of those one piece gowns that were really nice, especially in the middle of the night for those late night changes. She sometimes would be in a long sleeve onesie and I would just wrap/swaddle her in a blanket, with no pants. I would suggest getting a few different things so you find what works best for you!

Gowns are great for frequent diaper changes. Anything over the head and onesies stress me out bc his head is so big. I love footed sleep and plays like you said personally I think a lot of outfits look uncomfortable for baby to wear unless they're all knit fabrics. But maybe I'm just lazy :) I also like socks in a big size that pull up high and don't fall off. We use fleece but are in a cold climate and layer with cotton halo swaddles so we can unzip from bottom to diaper change.

I had her in the summer but even then, I was a sweating mess so I kept the house pretty cold. I dressed her in a onesie and pants everyday because of the numerous diaper changes. That was a lot easier than taking off sleepers. Even better - onesie and a sleepsack (or swaddle).

@JessiBee: hmm...sometimes zulilly has them. Or even just keeping LO in a onesie and wrapped in a light swaddle blanket as well. We do that now when we're too lazy to put his pants back on.

We used both...honestly in the early days when they're pooping like 12 times a day, gowns or just onesies with baby legs are the easiest, then you don't even have to take their legs out of sleepers or pants.

We did a mix of things. If we were going out, she was in a outfit of some sort because dressing up little girls is so much fun! She slept most nights in just a diaper and a swaddle blanket so there wasn't much sleep and play action going on.

My favourite shirts in the early days were the snap front ones kind of like the ones below. I liked not having to fiddle with things going over her head.

from everything i've read on here, people have recommended not to do outfits for the newborns... but, i ignored them all. :) it's my first little girl, and i'm determined to dress her up like a doll baby every day. most people seem to recommend sleep and plays for newborns though.

We're finally starting to look at / buy clothes for the baby. (I'm 32 weeks and a few days--due in February and live up north.) We're thinking that the outfits that make the most sense in newborn and 3-month sizes are the cotton long sleeved, footed one-pieces. Am I right that we don't want to be dealing with separate pants (like over a onesie) right away? It just looks like there are so many adorable options with onesies/pants, and fewer of the all-one-piece, but it seems like one piece is more practical for those first couple of months. Also, there is a lot of fleece out there. Wouldn't fleece be too warm for a baby who will (hopefully!) be doing lots of swaddling and sleeping?

First timer over here (obviously) who is feeling clueless and needs help!!
