DD was born 8lb 1oz and was down to 7lb 4oz at discharge then didn't gain her birth weight back until almost 3 weeks PP. The doc was ok with her wet/dirty diapers despite her slightly slower weight gain and turns out she's just got daddy's genes. She's been consistently in the 15-25% for weight. I think if baby is producing enough wet/dirty diapers then its a good indication that they are getting enough to eat. DD#2 was born a few weeks ago and at her 17 day weight check appt she was still 2 oz shy of her birth weight but plenty of wet/dirty diapers.

@Applesandbananas: yea those are definitely true for us - we have to coax him to stay awake and hold away from body! We started today giving him breaks when gets sleepy then going at it again after 10min and that seems to be helping him eat more at each feeding

@runnerd: LO was taking 3-4oz every 3 hours at that age (pumped milk) and gaining about an oz/day. Does your LO drain the bottle completely? If so, you may want to bump it up by 1/2oz until your LO is leaving a little... That's the advice I was given by our ped. Our LO was so so sleepy in those early days, he never protested when the bottle was empty, nor did he willingly stay awake for a feeding. We had to feed him upright and away from us to get him to eat much, if we snuggled him in our arms and tried to feed him, he'd just zonk out!

I was also told our LO should be gaining at least 5-7oz/week. She was almost at birth weight at 1 week because we were supplementing, then I started EBF and she nursed around the clock and gained only 3 ounces in the next 2 weeks. She was cranky and hungry all the time (but I didn't realize she was hungry because I bf her so much!) and having diapers but I didn't realize that the wet diapers weren't HEAVY wet bc I hadn't seen those before.

So I'll say its possible (probable?) that your LO isn't eating enough if he has really only gained 2 oz in the last week (assuming your scale is accurate), but it might be a scale issue. Also if he's acting okay and you have a ped appt next week I might not worry too much about it. Babies seem pretty resilient. We were apparently underfeeding for 2 weeks and it didn't actually hurt LO. As soon as we figured out we needed to supplement her again she gained over a pound the next week and totally caught up. Every day is not vitally important as long as you figure out the long term way to get his weight up (which you could talk to your ped appt).

@Cole: yea I was reminding myself that depending on exactly how I stand on scale my own weight fluctuates up to half a pound when I weigh multiple times in a row

@runnerd: Hmm maybe you could call the ped and asked to come in for a weight check? We went in almost constantly for the first 3-4 weeks to check their weight and it was always a quick appointment with a nurse. But I can also see that your scale at home could be quite a bit different from the scale at the dr office. Maybe weigh him after a few days and compare his weight gain only to other measurements at home? Good luck!!

It's so hard to tell with your scale at home but I know most pediatricians don't mind at all if you just want to pop in for a weight check. It might ease your mind if it's bugging you.

We discovered lo's weight issues at her 2 month appt and the dr and Lc said that at that point she should be gaining 5-7 oz/week. Lo had plenty of diapers but just wasn't gaining; I bf'd and had to start pumping and supplementing w that and formula at that point. During the day I feed her like constantly, like 1.5-2.5 hrs, before and after naps, and then she sttn for the most part since she tanks up during the day

@T.H.O.U.: thx!

@twodoghouse: yes FF. his poops are the yellow/normal consistency but he's just having one massive every 24-30 hours past 5 days. he usually eats around 2oz every 2.5-3.5 hours, sometimes 2.5oz. I'm anxious I guess since our next pedi appt is at 3 weeks and I want to make sure on track!

We dealt with weight gain issues with both my LOs. Our ped wanted to see .5-1 oz per day of weight gain. They had wet and dirty diapers, but just weren't gaining. We were breast feeding and supplementing, but we weren't supplementing enough. We ended up increasing the size of bottles they were receiving, as well as going on a higher calorie recipe formula. F is FF right? How many ounces does he take at each feeding? Has his poop progressed in color beyond green to yellow? That was one clue mine weren't getting enough to eat. They were having dirty diapers but not going through the normal progression of color and texture. Good luck! I know how stressful it is to have small babies and then not see that weight gain!!

It was way closer to three weeks for my LO to gain her birth weight. It may be normal for him.

I don't have LO's 2 week stats, but she was born at 7lbs 5oz, and was at 8lb 10oz by 3 weeks. So that's 21 oz in 21 days, I think.
If I remember correctly, my midwife said a gain of .5oz per day is usually enough.

Is it possible that your scale is slightly different than the doctor's scale? I wouldn't worry too much about it, as long as baby still has wet and dirty diapers. Good luck!

Our little one was back to his birth weight + 1oz at 1 week old per pedi appt. He will be two weeks old tomorrow and based weighing him at home has maybe gained 2oz in past 6 days.

My question is whether that's enough weight gain? I have read that they should be to birth weight by 2 weeks then gain about 1oz per day. Since he was at birth weight at 1 week, should be have gained 6-7oz this past week?

If anyone has any insight appreciate it!
