@Littlebit7: thanks, DS is already on Soy because DS1 was MSPI so we skipped milk based formulas. The poops have calmed down but we are looking for every indication that he may also have a soy issue.

We had this after she started reacting to dairy. Honestly it really didn't get any better until we figured out the dairy issue and switched to soy. I was changing diapers every hour, literally, but as soon as that poop would hit it didn't matter what cream, paste, powder was on that butt, it was RED and angry. Literally after 5 seconds on the skin.

The things that helped calm the redness were baking soda baths, lots of crawling around naked time, water wipes wrung out and soaked in water with a bit of baking soda. At times high percentage zinc creams actually made it worse. Towards the end of the journey as her skin was improving I think the purple desitin and triple paste helped the most.

we were given Rx for cortisone, but I didn't end up using it (I felt as though it would need to look like a crime scene in order to warrant a steroid near the genitals. It has been shown to thin skin with repeated application). Also treated it like it was yeast, but it wasn't. It was just caustic poops.

good luck. I know I was seriously stressed out when LO had her rash.

I've had three babies and never needed anything more than desitin until our third . And dear god I have no idea how I'd lived without it. It really is magic. Glad it helped!

@ladybee: use water wipes (like a cotton ball dipped in water--the hospital had use that. change him every hour, during the day, and air time you can give him is good (like in the tub seat, or somewhere easy to clean and safe to let him rest).

i hope he gets better soon!

I agree, allow to air dry, but if that's not an option sprinkle with baby powder..
At some point we started to use baking soda in her bath when hew bum gets sore. Now it's when she hasn't been wiping very well.

Put some baking soda in the bath and soak his bum after poopy diapers. Does wonders for LO when a rash is due to crazy poop! Then air dry, water only wipes, etc from everyone above!

A thick layer of A & D cream can help protect and it's easily wiped off. No wipes (wash cloths instead) and oatmeal in the bath water. Stick some in an old sock or stockings and tie a knot and soak it in the tub.

Looks like triple paste for the win! I'm sending DH out now. Thank you all for your advice and reassuring me this is normal. DS1 was allergic to milk formula so everything was bad the first 2 months till we figured it out. I was getting nervous.

My little man had a bad diaper rash around the same time, so much poop!! We got triple paste and I also stopped using wipes and used warm wet paper towels and cotton to dry. And I would dab, not rub. I would also make sure he was very dry before putting the diaper back on. And lots of triple paste!

Congrats on DS 2 btw!

Normal, my DS had this because he just pooped so much! I would let it air dry and then do a super thick layer of triple paste with a thick layer of aquaphor over it. For every diaper change.

Triple paste comes in tubs. It's just another brand of diaper cream. You can find it at Target or the grocery store. We always had good luck with it as well. Good luck!

Same thing just happened with dd2 during her first few weeks (she's currently 9 weeks old). I tried a variety of products that I had leftover from dd1 with no real change, and poor baby screamed every time we changed her diaper. Our ped recommended plenty of air time, cloth + water only, ensuring the dryest bottom when putting the diaper back on, and making our own paste of lotrimin and triple paste. Worked like a charm in just 3-4 days.

Our son had a an angry, raw bum for the first month of his life from mama being on antibiotics prior to delivery so I feel for you! It looked awful and we took him to the doctor to get a prescription anti fungal first. That helped ok, but what really cleared it up was mixing a combo of polysporin and OTC hydrocortisone and layering that first. Then a layer of Desitin. We did that twice per day and the rest of the time thick Desitin. Also diaper free time every morning. We got puppy pads for him to be on while we fed him. Make sure the butt is as dry as possible before putting cream and diaper on, and only use warm water and a cloth to clean instead of wipes. Dab and pat instead of rubbing the poop off.

No wipes, use a warm soft cloth instead. Air time, too. Should be able to do this since he's immobile, just let him lay on s towel! I'd try lotrimim and zinc oxide with maalox. I've also heard cornstarch works as long as it's not yeast..

DS2 is 9 days old. He's on soy formula. He's had liquid poop for about 5 days. We've talked to our ped and he isn't concerned at all. Well last night he probably had 9-11 poopy diapers and they are pure liquid.

Right now his little butt is red and looks like a burn. It has to be painful, when we clean him off he screams. We've tried aquaphor and now we are trying desitin but we can not seem to keep up.

Any tips? Or advice?
