My newborn was alert from the beginning, and would have much longer awake times than the sleep books predicted. She started to consolidate her naps when she got more active, but remains on the low end of sleep needs. Good luck!

It took R twice as long to get her asleep then she would actually nap. We had to hold her for every nap as well after the first couple weeks

When my son was a baby he never napped and was a terrible sleeper, didn't sleep through the night until one. I remember asking our ped if it was normal for a newborn to fight sleep and he said no but little one was just to busy observing the world to sleep. Even today at 2 1/2 he doesn't need a lot of sleep!

My new one does quite a bit of quiet alert time as long as he's being held. He spends some time kicking around on the floor mat when big bro isn't there to trample him ;)

As soon as C goes to bed we get E up for an hour or two to wear him out, then I tank him up right before I go to bed. Some fleece footed pj's and a swaddle sleep sack have been giving us some reasonably good stretches of sleep at night (knock on wood!!). Daytime is totally hit and miss right now.

People say that, but it's not true. Mine didn't! DS has never required a lot of sleep - way less than the guidelines. If baby is happy, don't stress!

T was never a huge sleeper. At most he slept 15-16 hrs a day. Just not a sleepy kid. Though I did try to get him to sleep every few hours (wearing, bouncing, swing).

@BabyBoecksMom: is she happy or is she fussy? If she's happy then I wouldn't stress too much and would try the swing after an hour of awake time and see if she falls asleep in it. Or if she's showing tired signs - glazed look or watery eyes or yawning I would try to put her down for a nap in her crib. Some babies may just be easily stimulated and kept awake by light/noise so if you swaddle and use white noise and put her in her crib she might fall asleep. Just my thoughts. My #1 resource for baby sleep is momsoncall.com.

LO1 rarely slept as a newborn. It took me months to sleep train her.. LO2 is now 1 week old and since day 1 he's a naturally better sleeper. I tried it all and there's nothing I was able to do change LO1 lack of sleep (until I sleep trained her because I was at my wits ends by month 6)

As long as she is content I wouldn't stress! My LO was a pretty alert/wakeful newborn but she was also fussy so I had to work from the early days to help her fall asleep. When she started sleeping better during the day, she started sleeping great at night. (I miss those days!) But if it ain't broke don't fix it. You'll know when it's an issue :)

@BabyBoecksMom: oh gosh so is mine!! he loves to be awake and looking around! he was literally up for hours the other day! i've started trying to get him to sleep because I think he was getting over tired.

ETA: I usually can get him to sleep pretty quick with a tight swaddle and some white noise!
