@HappyBaker: We dropped the nap around 2.5, but we did it because she was fighting nap time and it was awful. She does quiet time for 30 minutes in her bed now, either looking at books or listening to an audiobook.

It sounds like on the days your kiddo is napping, he's getting a lot of sleep. I think at 2 DD was sleeping 11-12 hours total in a day. So she never would have gone 7-6 plus a nap. She's 3 and sleeps 10.5 hours a day now.

DD still naps at daycare most of the time. On the days she naps, we put her to bed 30 minutes or an hour earlier than the days she doesn't nap.

we went through this around 2 as well. we kept trying because he was still napping at daycare so it seemed like he needed it. it was a hard phase that lasted about a month. then he went back to napping, and dropped it for real around 3.

We're in the middle of this too (DD is 2y4m). She will nap just fine at daycare - usually 1.5-2 hrs - but lately refuses to nap pretty much 100% of the time at home in her crib. I think she's just decided it's playtime with her stuffed animals (though she lays down to sleep with them just fine at night). DH warned her yesterday that if she didn't lay down and sleep he would take the lovies out of her bed. He did have to go take them (he told her they would have to sleep on the floor) and she seriously went right to sleep (after a little crying, of course).

She can almost go without a nap on days she is less active, but she gets very emotional in the evening and just about asks to go to bed, so I'd like to keep the nap as long as possible. We'll see if the napping without lovies continues to work...

My LO always took late naps once he switched to one nap (2-4, occasionally later). At about 2, he started to refuse to nap and was at the door crying off and on for an hour. We gave up and just moved bedtime much earlier from 9 to 7:30. He is happy and rarely cranky until bedtime and sleeps 12ish hours at night. If he does take a nap, we are careful to wake him or bedtime will be at 10/11. However, he has never been a early riser.

As of now, he rarely takes a nap.

@HappyBaker: Maybe push nap to 12 and nap 12-1:30

DD naps around 12:30- 1:30 at newly 2 and she is a light sleeper and that seems to be just enough

LO1 transitioned to one nap around 15 months and then naps started getting wonky around 2 and a half. A few months later naps were done completely. LO2 we are in the middle of things. She will be 2 in 2 weeks and will skip her nap 2-3 days per week. I put her in her crib as usual but she will just chat and play for an hour and a half. On the days she skips her nap she is happy and goes to bed easily and sleeps through the night. Days she naps are harder because it takes her a long time to fall asleep at nap and bedtime. I see no naps are on the horizon for us... I think some kids just have lower sleep/ nap needs.

No I would keep the nap. Early wake up just a phase.

I was convinced that LO was dropping his nap when he turned two, but it turned out to just be a phase.

He did drop it right before his third birthday.

My LO is a little over 2.5 and I believe his napping days (in the crib, at least) are over. I refused to believe it in the beginning and tried to CIO for a few days but he wouldn't nap. I essentially gave up fighting him about napping in his crib. I will say that I believe he still needs the nap though. He doesn't act too crazy or fussy without it, but he is very obviously tired. So, about half the time I will drive him around and he always passes out. He will get anywhere from 45 min- 1.5 hours that way.
As far as the early wakeups are concerned, maybe he really does just need less of a nap? (Maybe not drop it completely but can daycare wake him up after 30-60 min?)

My experience has been that both my LOs went through weird sleep things right around 2 but we got through them and they still needed naps. Even at 4 my oldest needs a nap after a few days of skipping it. My second has been more of an early waker but he will go back to sleep if one of us gets in his bed or we take him into ours. I don't really mind because he will sleep past 7 when that happens and it's not all night long.
I do know several of my friends dealt with similar sleep struggles at the same age and dropped naps at that point. Just be prepared that after a couple days without a real nap a longer one may be necessary. It's a transition and just takes time.

DS just turned 2 last week. For the past 3-6 months we've really been struggling with him waking up WAY too early. We'd put him to bed at 7:00pm and he'd wake up and be ready to start the day around 4:45am. He was napping at home and at daycare from 1-3ish, and didn't fight bedtime that much. We experimented with putting him to bed earlier / later / added blackout shades and nothing has helped. We tried letting him cry it out but he gets croup every few weeks and there never seems to be an okay time to let him cry where he isn't going to end up coughing a ton.

This past weekend, he fell asleep while we were running errands in the car around 10:30am and slept for like 30-45 minutes. He slept till 6:00am both days this happened and was great the rest of the day / wasn't a nightmare around his usual nap time.

Is it crazy to drop the afternoon nap so early? I'm thinking we'd probably just start letting him take a tiny catnap or car nap in the late morning but not a huge afternoon nap like usual? I'm not sure how we will get daycare on board with this, but sleeping until 6:00am the past two days has been AMAZING!

Anyone else have a kid who stopped napping super early?
