@yoursilverlining: I love flo's. a trip home isn't the same without a stop.

You've gotten a lot of good suggestions so far. I'd add in a cruise on one of the tall ships. There are some that leave from Bowens wharf. It's a nice way to see the mansions.

I'd also rent bikes. You can see way more mansions and not have to deal with the impossible parking.

Have a great trip! Oh and get a Dels and think of me. How I miss that stuff.

I second Scales & Shells, it's soooo good! But cash only. And also second Castle Hill, a lovely place for a drink on the lawn or brunch. Their restaurant is fantastic. Enjoy your trip!

My DH's parents live in Newport for 1/2 the year, so I go there fairly often. Here are some places to check out:

Restaurants
Scales & Shells (Seafood)
The Black Pearl (known for its chowder. Definitely get that)
Franklin Spa (I like the breakfast/brunch. They close by the end of lunch, and there can be a line so get there early or later)
Salvation Cafe - Fun creative menu and atmosphere
Brick Alley Pub - large menu and even larger portions.
Clark Cooke House - good for people watching

Pricier Restaurants/Special Occasion
White House Tavern - Old historic place with excellent food and service
Castle Hill Inn - Great food on the water. Get a cocktail and sit on the lawn chairs. If you go for lunch, get the lobster roll. The location is perfect.
Talulah - newer place that's gotten good reviews.

I agree about the Cliff Walk and the Mansions. Also Easton's Beach aka First Beach is a short drive from downtown in case you might want a walk along the beach. For something quirky and offbeat, check out the Tennis Hall of Fame. It's actually kind of cool. I would also try to go on a harbor/boat cruise. Newport has a great nautical heritage, interesting history, and there are lots of cool boats and yachts to look at.

Have fun!

ETA: I assumed you were going without LO(s), so hence some of the suggestions. My bad.

Cliff Walk is a really beautiful walk, although parts of it are narrow and have steps so it wouldn't be that easy with a stroller.

Flo's Clam Shack has pretty good fried oysters and it's a fun atmosphere. There is better fried seafood, but I have a soft spot for Flo's. They do a $10 Prime Rib dinner on Friday nights which is really good, but that might just be in the off-season.

Fort Adams is also really scenic and you can picnic inside the fort (it's not really "inside" like a structure, once you walk in, it's open with grassy spaces).

The mansions are fun for adults, but probably boring for children - except for the Green Animals Topiary Garden! http://www.newportmansions.org/explore/green-animals-topiary-garden

Easton's Beach

One of the vineyards does a daily wine tasting, but it's about 10 minutes from downtown.

You can always go down to the piers and watch the sailboats, or take a sailboat cruise.

<3 Newport!

@raintreebee: I've been to see some of the huge mansions, which are really cool. I think we parked at the visitor's center and took shuttle busses they have there from property to property. Some of them are incredible. There's a nice public beach (you have to pay for parking), but I can't remember the name. We went with our infant just a few weekends ago and ate at the Barking Crab, which was good for having a baby because we could sit outside with our stroller, it was casual, but the seafood was still good.

If you aren't going with a LO, there are a lot of cool bars and really nice restaurants, too. I would just YELP.

Oh, and there's a Cliff Walk...I've never done the whole thing, but I've done short parts of it and it's really beautiful.

Hi all. We are planning a last minute weekend jaunt to Newport, RI, staying at the Hyatt. Any restaurant/sightseeing recs would be greatly appreciated since we don't have much time to research before we leave tomorrow. Thanks!
