The articles says "possible fetal distress", which can be interpreted a million different ways. I had a friend just the other week who was told that when there was one tiny decel on an otherwise more-than-perfect NST. She's still pregnant and after a whole mess of NSTs and BPPs, baby has been cleared of any problems, which my friend knew all along. Plus, baby not being in position could be something as simple as still being posterior. Which is simply a variable in physiologically-normal vaginal delivery. And can change at any time during labor. *shrug* I don't know all the details, but I do know that she probably would have never left the hospital after the NST/BPP and gone straight for a c-section if there was a real need. It wouldn't be the first time that an OB talked a good talk about VBAC, etc., and then got nervous at the end.

I think part of the frustrating part for me is that its seems like she is putting off the c section in hopes of going into labor on her own and forcing a Dr's hand to try a vbac, and that just seem irresponsible of her given several medical opinions.

@Anagram: This is sort of along my lines of thinking. I'm not that person that thinks if the Dr. says so, they must be right, I've worked in the medical field, and Dr's are not always right, they are not always educated in all options, they also have limitations due to malpractice insurance, but it doesn't sound like this Dr. falls into those categories. It seems like he was genuinely trying to do the right thing for this woman and her family, and in this case I default to saying, she is not a medical professional, he is, and it sounds like he had plenty of reasons to warrant her getting a c-sec immediately.

@Foodnerd81: @T.H.O.U.: Meh, maybe. Just my opinion but the whole situation sounds selfish. Maybe I get don't get it though as method of birth really isn't important to me, as long as the baby is healthy.

@yoursilverlining: Yeah, I assume she didn't choose the others, or maybe she had to have the first one and never found someone willing to do a VBAC until now.

I'm not sure about this story but I've heard somewhat similar stories about an OB calling the police on a mother. A mother who delivered at the hospital I'm going to is suing because the hospital called the police and had her removed from her newborn (not for any good reason either like abuse or neglect). She luckily got to be with her baby the next morning because she went to court but WTF, very scary stories.

Is there any reason besides her own desire for a VBAC for having one instead of a c-section like she chose to have 4 times before? Especially where the baby isn't in a good position and there are signs of fetal distress? I mean clearly she isn't against c-sections. Honestly, she sounds selfish.

@Foodnerd81: That's why in this case, I'm tending to side with the doctor. If he's generally supportive of VBACs and took her case on when no one else would, and then changed his recommendation based on her GD and the ultrasound that showed the fetal distress, then it seems like he's "on her side" but is doing what's best for the baby.

I do hope everything is okay and they make it to tomorrow though!

@FarmWifeGina: I'm really interested in her side-- I knew there had to be more to it than what was reported, since, well, people don't find doctors who will try for a vbac after 4 csection without knowing how to do some research! I do hope to learn the outcome-- do you know if she is still at home and if she/baby are doing ok?

Remember this is only one reporter's view. I am in a large Facebook group with this woman and she is extremely well educated and has good reasons for her refusal, which the reporter did not address at all.
Personally, I think the OB is completely out of line with this harassment, but at least he hasn't actually gone as far as getting a court order from a judge and going through with what he wants. Which has been done and women have been forced into unwanted c-sections IN THIS COUNTRY because of OBs whom have no respect for women and their choices.

I don't know.....if there's fetal distress and the mom just goes MIA so late in the pregnancy---the doctor must feel responsible for the infants life. And the mom wasn't even going in for extra monitoring or anything. It seems like a pretty clear cut case of neglect on the mom's part.

If threatening police action gets her to the hospital.....eh, I'm not against it.

@Mrs. Blue: Yeah-- I agree with the doctor on the fact that she was putting herself and the baby in jeopardy by not listening and stuff, but threatening police action is overkill.

Wow! That's crazy. I think the doctor's reaction seems a little dramatic (the police part), but I'm not sure I can back up the mother's choices either.

Have you seen this?
http://www.tampabay.com/news/health/usf-obstetrician-threatens-to-call-police-if-patient-doesnt-report-for/2107387

Short story-- a women, pregnant with her 5th child after a c-section with each of the previous 4, sought out a specialist who would try for a VBAC with this 5th one. However, due to some unfavorable circumstances, OB recommended C-section after all (GD, bad birthing position, medical history). At u/s 1 week past due date, techs detect possible fetal distress and recommend going to the hospital for immediate delivery, but mom can't leave her 2 year old so wants to schedule c-section 2 days later. OB gets wind and writes her an email expressing his extreme concern for both their safety, then threatens to send police to come and get her and bring her for delivery.

Lots of weird factors going on in there, but to me, it sounds like she is being really risky with her baby's life at this point! Threatening the police was extreme, but you can see where the doctor is coming from! What do you think? I guess the section is scheduled for tomorrow now. I hope the baby is OK after all this.
