No supply issues here and LO STAN since about 2 -2.5 months. I am a SAHM though so we still nurse a lot during the day. I got my period back at 10 months pp.

I had supply issues & my baby was very sleepy in the beginning. I am sure her sleeping so much did not help but that wasn't the only reason. At 3 months she is a pretty good sleeper but doesn't STTN. We don't supplement at night because that is when I am most full, and she only nurses for 10 minutes or so before falling back asleep.

Next time I will pump at least once at night even if the baby is sleeping until my supply is established.

@Foodnerd81: your LO sounds very similar to my LO although Miss A was a pretty decent sleeper prior to six months (not that she's a bad sleeper but she's not consistently STTN yet).

Miss A is 15.5 months and still feeding 6-10 times in a 24 hour period incl 1-2 night feeds and providing I ate plenty of calories I never had issues with supply. I do attribute my good supply partly to biology and partly to night feedings.

I have often wondered if the connection between sleep and supply is more affected when a baby is sleep trained rather than STTN on their own accord.

My supply has been fine with STTN. LO STTN 8-9 hours early on, I WOH/pump, and I have had no supply problems so far at 5.5 months. In fact, I pump enough in two pumps for three feedings for LO. He slept 4-6 hour stretches at 1 weak, STTN 8 hours at least half the nights starting at 7 weeks, and every night starting at 4 months.

My LO usually feeds at least once a night, so I can't say if STTN affects me specifically. My supply seems to be closely tied to how much I eat and sickness - those are where I've seen the most ups and downs through pumping since September. Like PP, I think my supply would have been fine throughout this time if not for WOH.

@Anagram: I had a sinus thing and stomach bug through December and the new year. I only pump while I WOH but my supply took a hit for a good two weeks, but is now essentially back to normal.

Not at all related for us...DD had a nice run of STTN that she initiated (zero efforts at sleep training at that age) from 2.5-4 months. I think I produced a lot more because I had to pump last thing at night/first thing in the morning (so about 10 pm and 6 am) due to discomfort and I'd get about 5-8 ounces each session. All of that milk went straight to the freezer so I figure I was producing enough for 1.5 babies. With that said...I wanted to build the freezer stash and I could've chosen to wean off of those pumping sessions. It all became moot when the 4 month sleep regression hit. Now at 6 months I WOH and supply is more established...we've recently been doing 1 night wakeup and I pump 3-5 ounces more at work than what she consumes at daycare.

For us, I don't think they are related. LO has been sleeping through the night pretty consistently since I've been back at work. Some nights we will have bad ones, where she is up every 3-4 hours. I don't pump over night. I'll pump before I go to bed, but sometimes I don't. I'm back at work full time and can pump what she needs, plus an extra bottle. I've only taken some tea but not in a while. My supply actually went up when I went back to work and I've had my cycle return already.

I'm pretty confident they were related for us. S started STTN at 8wks, at which point AF returned and my supply tanked--either as a result of AF or because she wasn't demanding enough of me. But I will say that pretty much all of the mums in my IRL group that were EBF, have started supplementing around 4-5mths. Their babies are still waking up 1-2 times per night and yet they still don't have enough of a supply.

So I don't really know. I guess it all depends on the mum-baby combination. I'm combination feeding at the moment and I would say she gets half breastmilk half formula. If I could start again, I would make sure she continued to wake at least once a night up to this point.

They weren't related for us.

I am a WOHM and I EBF until LO was 1. LO started sleeping in 8 hour stretches by 8 weeks old (she would eat more frequently during the day and sleep at night).

I would usually pump before I went to bed (10ish) and LO would be up at 6ish and I'd nurse then. LO only nursed on one side at a time, so I'd have to pump one side in the morning.

I have yet to have any supply issues even though DD has always been a champion sleeper. In the hospital she was sleeping for 5 hours at night which stretched to 6-7 hours at one month, 7-8 at two months, and now 10-11 at 3 months. I was slightly concerned that this would affect my supply, but it hasn't at all so far. I guess my body just adapted to her sleeping and eating pattern.

@Foodnerd81: Oh, and I also think that to an extent..saying your supply is "established" and you can do whatever isn't true. At least in my case.

It's been interesting being an EPer because I can see the exact output. I produced the most when I pumped 6 times a day. Even more than when I pumped 8, but that's because I started pumping for longer. When I dropped to 5 pumps a day, I went from about 45 oz a day to producing about 39-40 oz a day.

When LO was a week shy of 6 months old, I dropped to only 4 pumps a day, and I started producing only about 34-36 oz a day. Then I got sick with a sinus infection and the stomach flu and ate dramatically less for 2 weeks (being stuffed up just kills my appetite) and I lost 8 lbs and my supply TANKED (for me).

And I haven't gotten it back. I've been eating normally all week and drinking a lot. I'm making only 30 oz a day (barely covers what LO eats).

I'm fine with it, because I already decided after 6 months that I'm okay with moving to fomula because 3 months of the MSPI diet is enough for me. BUT, it's clear to me that even at 6 months, my supply is not "established", in that...what I eat and drink and how often I pump definitely affects how much I make.

It's just interesting...like a science experiment. LOL. I guess the only benefit of EPing instead of BFing is that nothing is a mystery. I know exactly how much I make when.

I definitely think they're related. I've never had supply issues. I've been back at work 2 weeks and I've been pumping much more than she eats while I'm gone. LO still wakes 2 times a night (I'm currently trying to wean her from the first wakeup). But I think the fact that she still wakes to nurse has helped keep my supply up (her ped said the same thing). That and not having AF back are the silver linings to my sleep deprivation.

LO will be 6 months on Monday. I hope we're down to 1 wakeup soon!

LO nursed at least 3-4 times a night until she was 9 months. We cut it to one with some sleep training when we moved to a new place and she got her own room, and by 10 months, she was largely night weaned. I've never had any supply issues, and she's still nursing 4-5 times a day at 14 months.

@Foodnerd81: I gave up trying to breastfeed at 3 months and became an exclusive pumper but I think it's similar.

I didn't stop have a night time pumping session until LO was 4 months. And even then, I would pump 6 times, just all during the day and then I would go no more than 8 hours at night without pumping (so even on weekends, I would pump say 11 pm and then again at 7 am).

In my real-life mommy's group supply issues are rampant. I'd say 60% of the moms who still BF struggle with this and supplement with formula, but some of them have those magic "sttn" babies (and they don't pump when the baby is asleep) while others have babies that wake up, but that's when they give formula because they won't want to have to BF or pump at night.

I do think it can hurt some people's supply. However, I also have a friend in my mommy's group that has always EBF, has a very large and healthy baby boy who has slept 12 hours a night from about 4 weeks old. And she doesn't pump or do anything during those 12 hours. And her supply is fine. He also only feeds every 3-4 hours during the day--no constant snacking, if you will. So he's obviously extremely efficient and her body has a good supply.

It really all depends on the baby and the mommy in question. Latch, natural supply, eating and drinking habits of mom...I think they all play a part.

@Silva: Exactly-- last week C went 5 nights in a row with only 1 wake up and I was like, as much as I would like to believe this is the new normal, I'm just enjoying it while it lasts and not expecting anything.

I never had any supply issues that I know of (although LO's weight gain slowed drastically at 4 months, but I think it was more him just getting to his own natural body type), and LO didn't STTN/night wean til 13.5 months. I think it helped because LO stopped nursing much during the day due to being distracted. I think if he had nursed better during the day, the night sessions would not have been so important (after about 3 months--I think up to that point is when hormones/milk production are really important).

I don't know much about it, but we've had absolutely zero problems breastfeeding, and no supply issues, and my kid woke up at least 3 times a night until about a week ago. Now we're down to once a night. She is 9 months old.

ETA: she was up every two hours (except for a couple two week or so stretches) until about 7 months. BUt we were co-bedding that whole time!

I've read here and there about milk supply being greatest at night (between 12 and 6 am or so) or about that being an important time in terms of overall supply. And a few anecdotes I've heard have me wondering how close of a connection there is.

So, did you have supply issues during your breastfeeding journey? Did your LO sleep through the night? Do you think there was any relation?

My LO still doesn't sleep through the night at all at 6 months, so I'm definitely getting in some feedings during those key hours (not so much voluntarily...). I've never had any supply issues, but I contribute that to a combination of luck and a baby who loves to nurse very frequently and will happily comfort nurse for ages when she is sleepy.
