And just to update. Tonight is the start if night four. He didn't go down as easy. Cried for about 10 minutes but it sounds as if he is asleep now. I hope this is not an indication of how the night is going to go.

@QueensBee: he got up one more time, then decided 5 would be a good time to get up for the day. Almost 2 hours later, I'm hoping he goes back to sleep soon. He is just fighting it.

@MsLipGloss: yes, I've decided to wait a few days on naps as he was just so overtired. And at this point I'd rather get a good nights sleep.

He naps fine, alas long as I hold him. So it is just getting him to nap in his crib, which will take some crying.

@ALV91711: The nap training will likely get smoother once you have night sleep mostly sorted out. For us, I focused on night sleep before trying to tackle naps. (sleep begets sleep theory)

@LovelyPlum: thanks. They are. Last night he went down easy, woke up just after 11 and fussed for a few minutes and went back to sleep. Got up at 1 & 5 to nurse. Went back to bed easy both times.

It is much better getting a couple long stretches. Once he is sleeping better we are going to work on getting to one night nursing session.

The nap training is not going so good. We were up at 7:45 this morning and he finally just fell asleep about 15 min ago at 1:15pm.

This morning he only cried for 25 min then slept for about 5 and then woke up hungry. We went and did errands and he didn't fall asleep until on the way home.

@ALV91711: That was a great first night! Just a warning, sometimes the 2nd night can be worse. Hang in there. Buy night 4 or 5 it will be great! Just make sure you tell yourself a time you won't nurse before and stick to your guns!

Glad your first night went well! It will get easier each night (for you especially, even if he has some setbacks) and you're doing a great thing helping him learn that he can go to sleep himself. For me, it was harder anticipating it than it was in actuality. Good thoughts for you tonight and the nights that follow!

@LovelyPlum: @Rubies: Thanks

He woke up after an hour and cried for 10 min and was back asleep. This time we didn't check on him. That was about 10:30.

He then woke up at 1:15am and I nursed him, then right back to sleep and again at 5:15. I heard him fuss a couple times through the night but nothing major. He then was up for the day at 7:45am.

I myself woke up quite a few times, but I feel much more rested getting up only twice. That is what we wanted to get back to instead of 5-6 or more times that he has been doing.

Tonight is night one of CIO. Very impromptu. DS was having nothing of going to sleep. After an hour of rocking and putting him down and him waking up, DH and I agreed to CIO with check ins. It has been just about 10 min and he is starting to calm. He quiets down then starts up again but not quiet as loud.

I sure hope for all our sakes this works.

I really don't know what the plan is for the rest of the night.
