My kids get night terrors and you can tell that it's a night terror by the fact that they are not awake and that you can't awaken them. They are also normally at the beginning of the night too. My son gets them with illnesses, after we have been traveling or after we have had house guests. I normally just go to him and make sure he isn't going to fall out of bed! I try to combat them by just making sure to stick to a schedule so that he can get plenty of sleep and to bed early and they typically go away after a week or so. Good luck! Night terrors can be so upsetting!

I think my son had night terrors for a couple of nights recently. He'd wake up from a deep sleep screaming hysterically and didn't seem to be quite awake... although for some reason he was insisting he wants breakfast.

I think there are sometimes triggers to these things, like being overtired or a room that's too warm. For DS, it also looked like the full moon was confusing him. It was super bright and he couldn't figure out if it's night or morning :)

My DS has had a few night terrors. He's 18m. He is usually wailing (like, a really terrified screaming, not a normal cry), asleep/eyes closed, and stiff as a board. It's really scary.

FWIW, I've read that they CAN be hereditary, and I had them when I was younger.

@MamaCate: She's almost 23 months, so it could be dreaming, it seems to be every 4 hours she's waking up and coming in. 12 & 4 o'clock hours pretty consistently. Last night she let me lay her back down at midnight but I had to hold her hand and she fell right asleep, the 4 o'clock she looked terrified & I knew she wouldn't go back in her bed. We are all exhausted though. :bummed:

@LuLu Mom: how old is LO? It sounds like she might be dreaming? When my LO was a little under 2 she would often wake up screaming within 2 hours of when we put her down for the night. Her eyes would be open but she wouldn't really be awake. DH is convinced it was night terrors and it does sound similar although she was a little young. I would just rock her and hold her and try to do things to snap her out of it, like drink water, turn on the lights, take her out of her room. Once she settled, she was instantly back to sleep. Is that what you LO is doing?

As far as keeping her in bed, my new favorite thing is a toddler clock that turns green when it is time to get up ( you program it) and it has been great for early wake ups. That might help?

i haven't had personal experience, but i think i heard my neighbor's baby have night terrors. it was shrieking/screaming for 10 straight minutes in the middle of the night--not a tantrum (even a bad one), not an "i want mommy", but an "i am being beaten" kind of wail. we could see the mom just holding the baby but the terror continued. it was the kind of noise that would normally prompt a call to child protective services.

i imagine there are varying degrees of night terrors. mrs. blue wrote a post on night terrors:

http://www.hellobee.com/2014/08/08/more-than-monsters-in-the-closet-night-terrors/

hope your LO is okay!

Anyone dealt with night terrors? Can you explain how you figured out LO was having them?

The last 4 nights, LO has been waking up and coming into our room multiple times. Previously she was sleeping just fine. I noticed this morning (I let her sleep with us) that she would cry out in her sleep and "hit" but she was asleep? I'm assuming this is bad dream/night terrors? I need help, I need to get her back to sleeping in her own bed through the night.
