There is a nightlight in the bathroom and she's never been hesitant with the dark. She can even turn on lights if she needs to. I think I'll just take baby steps in reminding her and hoping it sticks.

Do you have a night light in the hall so she can see to get to the bathroom? I'd start by talking to her about how she can go at night by herself because she is a big girl. I would start with dad taking over this task now. Let her know that if she needs someone to help dad will come. Because she doesn't like that option as much maybe she would choose to go on her own.

@pinkarmadillo: DD at that age was scared of the dark so we put a night light in the bathroom and then she was fine to go alone. I would tell her she is a big girl now and can go alone at night and just have a light on for her

My 4.5 year old goes all by himself and has for a while. When he was first night trained we had the little potty in his room. We took it away after a while and put lights in the halls. Our room is across from the bathroom so he'd lay outside our door crying until we took him back upstairs to tuck him in. After a while we just started pretending we were still asleep and only take him back to his room is he was really upset. It took some time but now he rarely bothers us.

@pinkarmadillo: my son isn’t ready for this, but I don’t think you’re expecting too much. My best friend’s 3 year old does all night time potting by herself, so I don’t think it’s out of the question, just depends on the kid. How you’ve described it she sounds ready and maybe just needs coaching/ reassurance/ permission? I’d tell her at bedtime that if she wakes up and needs to potty, she can go all by herself now! She can call fornyou if she needs help, but she’s proven she is such a big girl that you know she can do it! If she still wakes you up, but she just wants you there but otherwise does it herself, I’d keep saying “you did it all yourself, great job! You don’t need to wake mommy up anymore next time!” I think eventually it will stick. At least that is where I’d start.

@Corduroy: This would be her too, haha. Thank you for the ideas. I decided to write the post because I suffer from insomnia while pregnant and I'm finding it almost impossible to go back to sleep afterwards. Granted, I need to go too most of the time so it may not make much of a difference.

@jennlin821: Great idea with the flashlight. She may not want to go back to sleep! She does go by herself during the day sans poop which I go in to wipe her. I know she can do it but don't know if she will do it.

B is 4.5 and he just started doing this by himself, and it’s probably only one time out of five that he does. I would say it just takes time?

Does she go to the bathroom by herself during the day? If she doesn't already, maybe start there.

If you think she is ready to go by herself at night, I would just start training her! Maybe get her a special flashlight, just to use for going potty at night?
Then just do it in steps:
you go together using the flash light,
then you wait in her room while she goes,
then you don't get up at all

Good luck!

@pinkarmadillo: If your sleep is the priority (and you have every right to make it so) maybe try putting a potty in her room or doing a sticker chart for when she goes alone. I would lean towards the sticker chart except my kids would wake me up to get the sticker.

Hmm, ok, maybe I'm expecting to much and am just spoiled because she's so independent and mature for her age. I figured that was just the next step? She definitely doesn't need my help and I'm just there for the tucking in. She's also never pooped over night. My reasoning is that we have a little one coming and it'd be nice if she would just do it by herself but I guess dad can take over although she typically refuses him if he comes in for some crazy reason. Our rooms are not close at all.

How close is your room to hers? Could you just call out to her "You can go potty by yourself!"? I would start by not going into her room and not tucking her back in. Then try to be further and further away each time and remind her she doesn't need to tell you unless she's going poop (I assume she still needs help wiping).

My daughter is 4.5 and doesn’t go alone. I didn’t go alone until I was at least 5-6: I would have my sister bring me all the way across the house to my parents room so I could wake up my mom and have her bring me all the way to the bathroom which was next to my bedroom. My daughter would be way too scared to walk to the bathroom in the dark (we do have a nightlight). She’s also sometimes sleep walking when she does it.

At least she goes! My 6 year old still doesn't wake up to go potty...

I think it's just a developmental thing that will happen with time. She is still really young! I honestly would not trust either one of my boys to go potty by themselves in the middle of the night at that age.

My almost three year old has been potty trained since January. She day and night trained all at the same time. So my question is how do I get her to go to the potty unassisted at night?

She typically wakes up twice a night to potty and I honestly think it's out of habit. She will sit up and call out "mommy, I need to potty." I hear her on the monitor so I'll go in and she gets up goes to the potty and does it all by herself. I tuck her back in and leave the room and she's good. No help, nothing other than tucking her in.

I've googled but all I get is night time training info. Our monitor doesn't have the talk back feature but I'm guessing the best way to go about it is coaching her through the monitor, huh? Any other ideas?
