I agree with looch. At least, that's where LO turned a corner on nighttime training. We "helped" by reminding him before bed every night that if he felt like he had to pee, he needed to get up and walk over to the bathroom before he started peeing. (I know--genius parenting skillz over here. :) ) I have no idea if our instruction had any effect. It seemed relatively pointless, but I felt compelled to "do" something, so I did.

Have you read the book Oh Crap Potty Training? There is a whole chapter about night training. It sounds like she is physically ready if she stays dry all night consistently and this is just a setback.

@misolee: the behaviour you're looking for is that they wake themselves up when they need to go, not that they hold it the entire night. there's nothing you can do, they have to release an enzyme.

Haha. My son is 3.5 years old, almost 4 now, and still consistently have a wet diaper over night! We were day + nap trained when we were 2.5 years old and this legendary night-training never ever grace our household. I wouldn't sweat about it if I were you - I am in a much worse situation than you are and I am not sweating about it! Especially you have to set alarm to get up to get her to the potty - personally I think you can wait :)

Just two nights ago DS decided to wake up in the middle of the night and go to the bathroom, took off his diaper, change to his underwear and go back to sleep. When I go get him in the morning his bed was soaking wet and he was wearing underwear. I just couldn't help but laugh .... sigh

My youngest (he's three) night trained at the same time he day trained (2.5) for 6+months he was dry every night- holding, not getting up to go. Now within the last month he's started wetting the bed randomly. He always wakes up as soon as he's gone, regardless if he's wearing a pull-up or underwear. I think he's going through a growth spurt and sleeping more deeply.
In any case, we are back to pull-ups. I can only get up and change sheets so many times in a row. And using them isn't encouraging him to be lazy and just pee in them. So that's my vote, be kind to yourself.

@mamaof2 she's been dry for months at night. We will have the random day here and there but has been dry prob since summer.

@sheskrafty I tried that too but she had already wet the bed when I would check on her in middle of night.

I think her problem is she's such a deep sleeper she doesn't realize that she has gone. I also have to mention the two days when she was sick and back in diapers, she was dry! So frustrating!

What if you brought her to the potty around 11 or when you go to bed and then again around 3?

@misolee: Another vote for you cant night train.

How long was she consistently dry for at night before you took off the diapers? I read that after 3 weeks of being dry every single night then you can say they are ready. I followed that rule for both my kids and my DS never had an accident after that and DD had maybe 3-4 over the next year.

I've also heard you just have to wait till they're ready... I've tried putting DS in underwear, but it didn't make any difference. If he wets the bed it doesn't wake him up. I've tried telling him he can get up and ask to go potty at night, he got up two nights, then went back to sleeping all night. So now I'm just waiting and encouraging him.

I agree with the others. I know the Oh Crap! Potty Training book makes a big deal about night training kids before they are 3.5 or something, but I've heard you really can't rush it and that they all figure it out on their own. I'd go back to diapers or pull-ups until she's consistently dry again and then just try again.

@iheartleopardprint: I've heard the same, that you can't truly night train. I would just go back to diapers at night until she is consistently waking up dry. I wouldn't make a big deal about it to her though.

I've heard that you can't night train as well. The body will do it when it's ready.

My daughter wore a pull up at night for a few months after being day trained. One day we noticed she had woken up quite a few days in a row without any pee in her pull up. So we stopped the pull ups overnight. She was completely dry for a month overnight then started having accidents at night. It would wake her up and she was completely distraught that she wet her bed and was freezing being drenched in pee from head to toe. She did that twice so the pull up went back on. The next time she was dry for over a week overnight and we pulled her pull up again. No accidents after that.

We always told her that the big girl diapers were only for night night time. It never seemed to affect her day time.

I've always heard you can't force night training, it's just something they do when they're ready unfortunately.

LO just turned 3. She's been day trained completely since she was a little after 2. She's very good at holding it in during the day if need be (like when we get stuck in traffic). I can't even remember the last time she had an accident. She also is nap trained and she takes monster naps sometimes (2.5-3 hrs). For whatever reason, I waited to take her off diapers at night even though she's been consistently dry. Number two is coming in February so I bit the bullet and started two weeks ago.

She goes potty 30-45 min before bed, and then right before she goes to bed. We limit drinks before bedtime. For the first couple of days she did great. I would set my alarm at 2 am and take her and that would be enough. But then, she started wetting and would just sleep through it. I set my alarm earlier and earlier and she would be wet each time. I started taking her right before I went to bed but she would still go again afterwards in the middle of the night.

She's had a fever over the weekend and we fever her extra fluids so had her back in diapers for Saturday and Sunday. Today, she was back in underwear and went twice. The first time, she wet the blanket (new one I bought I could just throw in the wash) and the second time, she had kicked off her new blanket and wet the sheets.

Now it's 4:30am and I'm running laundry while she sleeps with her daddy in our bed. Argh.

what am I doing wrong? Or do differently? We never used a pull up during potty training and don't want to start...
