Six months ago my answer would have been the same as @KT326, but DS was outgrowing the biggest size of goodnites so we tried the alarm and it worked. It took about a month but now he sleeps through the night dry.

My son is pretty young (2 years and 8 months old) but he has to wear a diaper to sleep. He's only woken up dry like 3 times. I have heard from several folks that staying dry at night is biological and it just takes time, I agree with this thinking, which is why I refuse to night train. For what it's worth, my husband wet the bed till he was like 6/ 8 as well. I think his parents had to give him DDAVP nasal spray for it (not sure if pediatricians these days recommend this anymore).

Do not push it....DS1 just night trained this past April or May and he's just about to turn 8. He's always been a deep sleeper and that's just how he is. My nephew had accidents here and there until he was 10. DS2 was basically night trained before he turned 1. All is totally normal.

My pediatrician's son was still in pull ups at 8 and mainly b/c he sleeps on the top bunk and they didn't want to worry about him falling out of bed at night. :)

It is hard when the younger LO is ready to ditch nighttime diapers before the older one. My friend's 8yo is still in nighttime pull ups and her 6 year old has been out of nighttime diapers for awhile now. I think there were some hard feelings at first, but she talked through it with the older one, and just emphasized how everyone's bodies are different and there's nothing he is doing wrong.

I agree with not pushing it...

But a little advice on what I did to help with the laundry..
-we had a mattress cover
-sheet
-then I put like two big beach towels to cover the full bed (she didn’t roll around so just the area she was sleeping)
-sheet

Usually...the pee stopped at the beach towel so if it happened in middle of night, we would just strip the first two layers and have the other layers still ready just in case

Thanks all! This is really reassuring. My instinct has always been to just not push it and let her decide when she's ready, and then we started to feel like it was never going to happen on her own... I'm second guessing having gone down this road, but also feel like it's too late after a month to return to pull ups (esp since we donated about 6 packs of them...) but I also really need some sleep! Lo1 has been dry 2 of the last 3 nights so maybe we're turning a corner?

Dd stopped wearing pull-ups a few months after turning 5. Ds is almost 4 and will occasionally wake up dry, but I have no desire to rush the transition.

I know Irene doesn’t post here anymore but there were a lot of posts from her discussing the strategies she used if you looking to read old board posts on the topic.

Third (or fourth!) what others are saying. It’s really NBD. My older girls both needed a pull up at night til 5 or 6, and all of a sudden just kind of didn’t. My youngest started being dry at night ridiculously you g, like 18 months or so. Pediatrician says Dream pees or peeing twice at bedtime (like before and after a story) can urge them in the right direction but a lot of it is hormonal/developmental. Honestly once I started talking about it with my friends I realized that we were definitely not alone in this.

My DD is almost 6 and still wears a pull up at night. I think she has been dry overnight 20 times in her whole life. She is a very deep sleeper and the few times we tried to wake her up to pee around 11 she had epic 2+ hour meltdowns, so that wasn't going to work. Like @KT326: both of the pediatrician's we've had have said that it's not really possible to train. It's a matter of time. For now we are just going with it. DD day trained easily and never had an accident, so I'm hoping that when she's ready it will be easy.

@KT326: I second what you say. There is no right age.
@nana87: wetting alarm didn't work for my nephew. He never heard it. It's my sister who didn't sleep for a whole month because it was waking her up
Courageous mamma. I would not do that much laundry. It took me forever to stop using pull ups not because they were wet ... but because I was scared they would have an accident so they wore underwear and then the pull up on top so I would not have to do much laundry if they had an accident. Also I reused the pullup a few times before trashing it as they were dry. Once it went on for probably a few months, I ditched the pullup...

Our pediatrician told us you can't night train (actually both pediatricians we have seen). They are either ready or they aren't. They have to produce an enzyme that makes them have less urine at night and they also need to be able to wake up when they have the urge to go. This happens at a different age for each child.

My 8.5 year old still uses pull ups and will have a wet one 3-4 nights a week. He is such a heavy sleeper and also gets super crabby if I try to wake him up to go. I also don't limit fluids because we have dealt with constipation issues and he needs all the water he can get.

My almost 4 year old could probably switch to underwear as he is usually dry. But for now we are fine with him wearing pull ups.

So probably not the help you were looking for, but I just wanted to say it's totally normal for some kids to take longer than others to stay dry at night.

We just went through this with our girls! Ages 4.5 and almost 3. The younger was staying dry most nights anyway, so I thought it was a good time to ditch the pull-ups. The older one was NOT staying dry. Like twice a month maybe. But she was really motivated to try because little sister was.

So like you, we added the wake up to pee before we go to bed. With that she stayed dry maybe half the time. It was still a LOT of laundry. I was so sick of laundry and almost gave up several times. What helped a little was a sticker chart. If they woke up dry they got a sticker, and with a full chart got a special prize (small toy or book). Then, it just took time. We started in July, and they're finally dry pretty consistently. I can't remember the last time the younger one had an accident. The older one still has a little dribble maybe once a week or so, but she wakes up and finishes in the bathroom. Another thing that helped was limiting fluid intake a bit - nothing after dinnertime. Also I noticed they would have more accidents when they were overtired. We already keep them on a pretty good schedule, but they're way more likely to have an accident if they're up even a half hour later than usual, so we're really strict about that.

I have no advice since we're working on a 3-1/2 year old also... she's potty trained during the day but still has accidents, and always has wet pull ups in the morning. With DS we got lucky and he did it all at once on his own, I'm not even sure where to start with getting her night trained!

We've been diaper-free in our home for almost a month now and I've only had a full night of sleep like 1 night of that whole time!

I'd love some tips or positive stories if anyone has them

Here's the thing...my kids are on the older side of this--lo1 is 6.5, and lo2 is 3.5. I know, I know, I have a first grader who was still in diapers at night until a month ago...we really let it go on too long but she has been really resistant to trying, and with her personality especially, it makes things harder to push if she's not on board. Our younger daughter was sleeping through the night with dry diapers for a few nights, so we jumped on that as a window of opportunity to get her out of diapers, but that also meant lo1 had to start trying too, so...here we are a month later. the 3yo has had more dry nights than 6yo, but still usually wakes every couple days motn having leaked. The 6yo usually wakes up wet anywhere between 4-5:30am--so she's making it *almost* through the night. and that's even with dh waking her to pee around 11 before he goes to bed (we started that about 2-3 weeks in and she is on board with it).

We're doing so much laundry, everything smells like pee. Help! Is there anything else we can do? They pee right before bed time, we wake the older one to "dream pee," we're using pads on their beds but they don't really catch it all....Has anyone used those "bedwetting alarms?" do they do anything?
