So the past few nights have been great! He's doing 8 or 9 hour stretches. Wakes up around 4 to eat, and I give him a smaller bottle (last night was 4oz, it used to be 6). Tonight he'll get 3oz at that feeding. He's already completely dropped the 12/1 feeding! Just wanted to give an update in case someone finds this post later.

Ughhhhhh. So he did kind of good last night? He did a 9 hour stretch and completely skipped the 12/1 feeding - which is great! BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT, he woke up ready to party at 4:50am. Talking, rolling around. I fed him and he did not want to go to sleep. I eventually got him back to sleep (fussing) but he only got to sleep another 30 minutes before I had to wake him to take him to the sitters. Normally when he wakes at that time he eats and goes right back to sleep.

Also, I'm not sure how much of him skipping that 12/1 feeding was because of the weaning (we would have been at 4oz again last night) or because he got his shots yesterday?

@Littlebit: if I remember correctly (exhaustion really does a number on our memories!) we also tried to EXTEND the feeding in addition to reducing ounces. So if he woke at midnight one night we tried to extend it by even 15 mins the next night. And continued to do that. He eventually eoke up later and later in addition to drinking less and less. Eventually the 12/1 and the 4/5 kind of merged. That's when we got rid of the 4/5.
To extend him each night we didn't offer bottle until he was clearly not happy with the paci (stopped dozing once the paci was in, cried, etc). But many times I'd give him the paci and he'd sleep for another 30-60 mins! By the time we were done extending time and decreasing ounces he just woke up at 4am.

@Littlebit: E woke up and we'd give a paci and just kind of rub her chest a little. We had to CIO once we moved her to a crib. But there was more going on than just night weaning from her bottle.

I do have a question though, when we've weaned to 0oz for that feeding, will he just stop waking up? Or will he still wake up and we have to soothe him/or let him CIO? I don't want to pick him up or rock him, so I'm guessing we'd just give a paci in the hopes that he'll stop waking...unless we decide to CIO.

@Littlebit: haha, okay, so he should be able to forgo the feeding, but I'd just go on with decreasing the amounts as you already are. Eventually, it will fall into place, just depends for you, how quickly you want to move!

@Littlebit: Same as what @BlackBird said. If he's fussing himself to sleep that's a good thing! Ours did too, going to sleep was never the problem. We only had to do CIO because he woke aeound 5am out of habit and cried for the bottle. I think the first night it was 1.5 hours but it was on and off. He'd nod off for a few mins then wake and cry for a few. Rinse, repeat. The next night it was only a half hour, next night maybe 15 mins, and by the 4th night he just didn't wake up until 6. He still wakes up anywhere between 6 and 7, but it's WAYYYY better than 5am!

@Littlebit: Yes! I love the Troublesome Tots site! I used that a LOT when we were working towards eliminating night wakings! When we did, we still had a 5 or 6am wake up a lot of mornings (which, whatever, i'm up at 5 for work) but she did eventually stretch it out to 6:45 and 7:30 on weekends if we let her!Fussing is good! Maybe you'll skip the CIO phase (although that was a 20 minute thing for us, so totally NBD)

How many pounds does he weigh? I recall that 10 lbs is the magic number, where they can metabolically drop a feed at night. Just for full disclosure, my son did not, but I felt comfortable slowly beginning to decrease the amounts.

@SweetiePie: I will look into it! Our 6month ped appt is today.. hoping he'll give us some insight too. Right now he fusses himself to sleep at night, no more rocking. So I know he's capable of putting himself to sleep. But we haven't done CIO.

Thanks for the help everyone! I found this article the other night for weaning bottle fed and breastfed babies...http://www.troublesometots.com/what-you-need-to-know-about-sleeping-through-the-night-part-3/

--thought I would share in case someone searches for a similar question.

Right now we are just tackling the 12/1 feeding. I wasn't sure how quickly to back it down, so we did 5oz for two nights, and last night was 4oz. We'll do another night of 4oz tonight, and then down to 3. My husband does that feeding and he said he hasn't protested at all. So I know it's definitely out of habit now.

This sounds exactly like my son when he was 3-4 months. Same wakeup times and same amounts of formula.
My ped told me to tackle the 12/1 feed first. I did that one slowly. I think I decreased .25 oz every night. He barely missed it! He was exactly the same if he had 5oz or 1oz. That's how I knew he truly didn't need it. But it's important that once you decrease the amount to never increase it again! And once it's gone it's gone. Paci, paci paci! (If he takes a paci).
The 4/5am my ped had me do more aggressively. He was also having 5oz and she told me to decrease by an ounce each night! And by the 6th night when there was nothing left, let him CIO. We had to let him CIO for 3 nights and then he was sleeping 7p-6a!
And fwiw, this was at FOUR months that my ped told me to eliminate that 4/5am aggressively, saying he didn't need it and it was habit. So glad we did!

ETA: I would take a look at 12 Hours by 12 Weeks. I read the parts relevant to me in an hour, it's very very short. It is controversial, BUT 1) You are well past 12 weeks so I don't think anything in there is radical for a 6 month old and 2) just like any advice, you can modify it to what you are comfortable doing. I read it and modified it to what I was comfortable with and with my peds input (which was very comparable to the book). We were also a little past 12 weeks when I first read it so it wasn't as aggressive as we were already on a 4 hour schedule, he was already drinking 24oz, etc.

I would try to eliminate the 12/1 feed before tackling the 4/5 feed (that one may soon become a 6am only wake up....then 7!)

When he wakes up at 6:15 a.m. are you giving him a bottle then? I'm thinking keep the 6 oz the same, and start cutting down the 4/5 a.m. one. If he's getting a bottle as soon as he wakes up, he might start stretching it out until then.

Trying to cut back on our MOTN feedings. He's usually waking around 12/1 and drinks 6oz and then usually around 4/5 for another 5oz. We'd like him to sleep until 6:15am (when we have to get him up for the sitters), he's usually asleep by 7pm.

Our plan is to decrease the bottles by an ounce, slowly. My question is more for the 4/5 feed. Should I decrease that one also? Or just decrease the 12/1 feed? Not sure what to do since it's pretty close to his wake up time. Any advice?

Not sure if it matters, but he's 6months and formula fed. He has slept through the night a handful of times, so I know he can do it. At this point I think he's doing it out of habit, not that he needs it.
