How's it going???

My kid's gone about 5 times STTN since she turned 5 months, so I also am working on getting my almost-6 month old to STTN *consistently*. Some kids can totally do it!

@scg00387: Well, the pooing thing is just a recent development in the last couple weeks, so hopefully, that will start going bavk down now. We only had one dirty diaper last night. I think our plan would be just to go in & check diapers & change if necessary, hold and comfort for a minute and then lay them back down.

@Mrs. Blue: I didn't see you mention it, have you tried a dream feed? My sister with the twins said they did that until 10 months and it worked well. They were preemie though and night weaning was not an option.

If its any hope we had one night feed for a long time like months 5-8 went to two night feeds and then to none right before 9 months. I did do no cry sleep solution at 5.5m for him to initially fall asleep on his own and then once in a while to shift night feelings later (which eventually eliminated them).

I guess I don't get how you can do CIO if they're regularly still pooping at night? We had the same issue when he started eating more but it settled after a week or so.

We were in this same boat. I was fine with the 4/5AM wakeup, but not all the others. Rather than timed checks, I would let her cry/fuss and when she really escalated I would go in and rub her back for a few minutes then leave again. I envy those that said it only takes their baby 15 minutes. Little Deer can easily last for 1-2 hours (not crying that whole time or anything, but still so hard!). I think the biggest thing is to find a way other than feeding them to soothe them and let them know you're there, but then letting them figure it out without the bottle. Hope it gets better soon! Stay strong :)

@aprk: @heartonastring: @hilsy85: @junebugmama: Thanks for weighing in. I realize night weaning at 6 months may be controversial. Our ped feels strongly that they should be able to STTN at this point because he thinks their weights and milk intakes are sufficient that they don't need to eat at night, even though they are little peanuts. Since we exclusively bottle feed, I know how many ounces they are getting. They've slept from 7 to 5 enough times on their own that I feel pretty comfortable that they can go without night feedings, unless they are in a growth spurt, sick, etc. I think a lot of it is just habit because it doesn't matter whether I give them 2 or 6 ounces; they'll eat that and be content to go right back to sleep.

You really lucked out that they were sleeping the way that they were. I hate to say this, but I feel like in parenting, everything is just a phase. Them STTN so early on was just a phase, them waking up now, is just a phase, and it will change eventually too. Waking up 1-3 times a night at this age is very normal.

I agree with others that it's normal to eat 1-2 times overnight, but 3 seems excessive...if they're bottle fed, you should be able to be making sure they get in all their calories during the day (or as much as possible). We used Ferber's method (CIO with checks) to get down to 1 night waking at 6.5 months--at their age, I don't know that I would feel comfortable completely night weaning, but then again, my LO was very skinny and was a distracted nurser during the daytime. Honestly, I would try it--worst case, it doesn't work, and you're no worse off.

I know you don't want to hear this, but it's very much developmentally normal to continue to eat during the night at this age :( I think that typically night weaning isn't recommended until 9+ months.

I'm not trying to judge in any way if you decide to try a sleep training strategy to help with STTN, but just trying to provide an explanation....and, as the mother of a similarly aged child, to commiserate :)

Wishing you lots of luck!

You don't want to hear this, but we just slogged through it with our twins. Was miserable, but we didn't get a significant improvement in sleep until we were finally comfortable sleep training and night weaning at 10 months. I felt like I was doing everything wrong that they didn't sleep well early on, but for mine, it really seemed to just be a maturity thing where they grew up into better sleep patterns.

We took occasional nights where DH had the whole night shift and I slept and vice versa. That helped. And putting the kids in separate rooms so they didn't stir one another. DS would wake more often, so that gave DD a chance to develop her own sleep patterns better.

Hang in there. It's rough. Good luck, love.

At this age, 1 or 2 feedings a night are expected. We worked out a plan to do interval checks to drop the non-feeding night wakings since we were up to 6 a night. After a few days to a week the "extra" wakings should be dropped. The key for us was to pick a response (shushing, back rub, pick up - whatever doesn't matter as long as you are 100% consistent)

We've got to do this too. He's never STTN, but was only up twice maybe three times. Now we are back to every 2-2.5 hours to nurse and sometimes waking in between. Our house is tired.

@lindseykaye: the first time we sleep trained, we eventually went to no checks like you said, but they've just upped their solid intake by a LOT night time dirty diapers are frequent. As in, everything they woke up last night, we had to change them. Maybe we could just pop in quickly to check diapers and then leave.

I found that 15-20 min. is usually the amount of time it takes my LO to fall asleep again on her own after a MOTN wake up and that checks do not work for her as she gets excited thinking I'm in there to cuddle and then I leave again and she gets pissed.
Try leaving them for a bit longer without a check if you're comfortable with it. Most times when I think I'm at the point of going in, I give her 5 more minutes and she falls asleep.

i'm sorry! sleep deprivation is so rough. i for one get very depressed when i don't get enough sleep. anyway, we did CIO deliberately for night weaning around 6 months. she cried for 45 mins, and we didn't do any checks. it worked in one night. we have had to do it a couple other times after illnesses and after the 9-month regression (which was horrible, btw) as well and it usually is the same deal...45 mins, one night. i am not really sure how to do that with twins with the waking each other up thing though - hopefully they'll just be able to CIO simultaneously and that'll be it. i agree with @smurfette that it will be harder the older they get. good luck!!

At our 6 month appointment our pedi told us to CIO since R used to STTN but she got used to us getting her when she woke up in the MOTN when teething. She was still putting herself to sleep at the beginning of the night.. It was rough three nights but since then she STTN. The pedi told us the longer we waited to train her the harder it would be.

We did some sleep-training early (about 3.5 months) in an attempt to just get them to fall asleep on their own. They not only did that, but they started sleeping from about 8:30-5 a.m. It was glorious. A couple weeks later, though they hit the four-month sleep regression followed by two months of one illness after the other. They were eaking up often and we fed them bottles. They've both been healthy for the last 2 weeks but they're still waking up at least 2-3 times.

DH and I are at the end of our ability to keep going. Neither of us ever gets a break since we have two and split night duties. This weekend we tried letting them CIO for about 20 minutes with one check at 10 minutes. We've ended up feeding every time except once when F went back to sleep. What do I need to do here?? They fall asleep in their own fine still, so I'm not sure it's really a sleep-training issue. I'm fine with an early morning feeding (like when they were waking at 5), but we really just need a chunk of sleep again that's longer than 2-3 hours. We've never done any intentional night weaning, so I'm not sure what that even looks like. Do we just let them CIO longer? I tried taking down their feedings to a smaller number of oz thinking I could gradually work down to no bottle, but they just got more peeved looking for the rest of their bottle!

Please, please tell me what you would do. I have been on the verge of tears every day at work for the last two weeks because I just cannot keep going like this.
