Our LO2 was waking multiple times up through one year old. She goes to daycare but has never drunk much from a bottle, so that may have been an issue.

We tried limiting overnight feeding several times: my husband would go in to calm her up until a certain time at night. We would stick with it for up to a week, but it just meant less sleep for all of us (baby up crying, husband up tending to her periodically, me up listening to the baby cry) so we would stop. Finally at 12.5 months, we tried again and she started sleeping through the night after 1 hard night. For us, it seemed like we really just had to wait until she was ready :(

Oh, and she's EBF and does take a bottle of pumped milk at daycare, so maybe that supports your theory! Hang in there!!

After sleeping training my LO at 6.5 months, we were down to 1 wake up a night. For most of month 8 she was waking up 2-3 times a night again, which stunk. But now since turning 9 months last week she's slept completely through every night! We didn't do anything differently, I think it was developmental. So maybe you're getting there!
DD is also super clingy to me right now and won't let anyone else calm her. I think 9 months is a time for major separation anxiety, so I might wait a few more weeks before trying anything in terms of training.

@Portboston: I'm in the same boat. DD doesn't take bottles because i am home all day. I think I am going to start to try to get her to take a bottle during the day. Maybe this will help her get more calories during the day. My Ped said the same thing, though. That it is normal for EBF babies to wake still during the night until they are one and beyond.

My almost 9 month old still wakes 2x a night to eat (unfortunately). Usually one of those times is when I'm still awake around 9-10pm. Then another one sometime during the night but that second wake up is not consistent and it drives me bonkers. It can be at 1am or 5am there is no rhyme or reason!

From what I've read, it's very common and normal for a baby to wake 1-2x a night to eat if they are ebf up to 10 months old. Then 1x a night until they are 12 months old. We've tried CIO for MOTN wake ups to no avail so I'm just waiting it out. I have a theory that babies who are ebf without bottles sleep worse then babies who take bottles. I SAH and LO never gets a bottle so I really have no clue how much he is getting during the day. At least if he was taking bottles id have some idea if he wasn't getting enough.

@schubr03: my dd (9mos) gets up at least twice per night. My ds was up 2-3 times a night until he was well over a year old. It's pretty normal, even though I'm exhausted.

So I wanted to post a quick update on this and maybe get some new advice. DD is now 9 months and will fall asleep fine on her own for naps and bedtime. She is awake when we put her in her crib, and falls asleep within about 10-15 minutes depending on how tired she is. Our problem, though, is she is still waking about 2-3 times a night. She is only getting two naps a day between 2-4 hours total day sleep. I have tried having hubby go in a get her to calm her down so she doesn't think it's eating time, but she just cries harder because she wants me. We have tried just letting her cry it out when she wakes up, but she literally gets so upset she cannot calm herself down. I am at my wits end and am exhausted. I would even be happy with one night feeding. But 2-3 is too much for a 9 month old and for mom! Help me out! What more can I try?

I just wanted to give a quick update!
Ella is now only waking 2 times a night. The first is usually around 12:30 and hubby goes in at that time, calms her and then she goes back to sleep. Hoping that one will end soon! The second is around 3 for a feeding.
We have switched to two naps a day and that seems to be working great! Both are about 1.5-2 hrs long.
She is successfully putting herself to sleep for naps and bedtime. She usually nurses before both (bedtime is nurse, bath, jammies, bed) but stays awake during the feeding. I then put her in her crib awake and she rolls around for a little while, plays with her toys, and then falls asleep within 10 minutes.
We have put a few stuffed animals in her crib and I think that has helped a lot! It keeps her occupied and not crying. She usually will play with them for a little while before bed and then in the morning she will play with then after she wakes up. This is a life saver for me because it gives me about 30 minutes to wake myself up before I have to go in there and get her.
Overall, we have a much happier baby and a much happier mommy. 😊 Hoping the first waking will go away soon and we will have just one night feeding and wake up! Thank you all for your support and help!

@schubr03: I only didn't mention CIO because you didn't. I HIGHLY recommend reading through all of Alexis' posts on CIO. Not only will she make you feel better about your decision, but she has a lot of great suggestions to make sure you're set up for success. Start here;
https://www.preciouslittlesleep.com/how-to-cry-it-out-bedtime-edition/
But when you have time:
https://www.preciouslittlesleep.com/cry-it-out/

We had to do CIO with DS1. It was hard, but all three of us were better off afterward. I was able to avoid it with DS2.

I think you're right to leave naps alone if you're going to CIO at night. You definitely don't want an overtired babe at night for CIO. Although you still may want to cap nap 3 a bit earlier to make sure that she's tired enough at bedtime so she doesn't have too much energy left for crying.

And feel free to PM me if you want help.

@Jess1483: thank you! These were so helpful! I think we have decided to tackle our problem of Ella not being able to fall asleep on her own before doing anything with naps. Though somewhat unpopular. I think we are going to do the CIO method starting tomorrow. Wish us luck!
This means that night weaning will have to wait. The first and most important issue is to get her to be able to fall asleep on her own.

@schubr03: Took me awhile, but here it is:
https://childsleepscience.wordpress.com/2014/11/05/interpreting-night-wakings/
(See the section on false starts, but I think the whole thing is good).

Also, I highly recommend the site https://www.preciouslittlesleep.com. It helped me get DS1's sleep under control a bit when it sounded like yours. She is kind of billed as "pro-CIO," but she does have a lot of other suggestions and hints. She thinks of CIO as a "last resort," and offers other guidance as well. I'd start with
https://www.preciouslittlesleep.com/6-9-month-baby-sleep-guide/

@schubr03: the one-hour wake up is actually really common. I'm trying to find a really helpful article about it. But my guess is too much day sleep+too late bedtime. I'll keep looking for the article, though.

We had the 1 hour later wakeup for awhile, too. Is she totally awake when she goes into the crib? For us, that seemed to be the problem.

I would try limiting her naps to 2 hours, but if she still needs 3 in a day I wouldn't worry about it. I think teaching her to go back to sleep on her own without nursing at night is probably more important. You may have to let her cry a bit. It was so so hard for me, but seeing how happy she is now means it was worth it.

Okay, so tonight I started the nighttime routine at 7:20 and she was asleep by 8:30 (which to me seems like it takes forever!). But then she just woke up 5 minutes ago screaming! Like she was in pain or something! This happens every night! I can always count on a wake up about an hour after she goes to sleep for the night. I don't understand!

@Jess1483: @Astro Bee: I think I am going to cut back on day time sleep significantly. I'm gonna try the 9 and 1 nap times, that's pretty much when she sleeps now anyway. I think I will keep each nap to right around 2 hours at most. Getting her to bed a little earlier may also help, I think. Starting the nighttime routine at 6:30, asleep by 7:30 seems more reasonable. Hopefully this will help.

We were having multiple wakeups around this time, 3-4 before 1 am alone. What worked for us was going to 2 naps, at 9 and 1, at around 8 months. He usually only sleeps for 40-60 mins each nap, but he goes to sleep at 6:30 now rather than the 7:30 he was doing before, and gets up at 7. Once we did this he went back to one wakeup (and now none!). I guess it's 2-3-4, but it's been great for us. We also did CIO at night, but now I can nurse almost to sleep or to sleep and after I put him down, even though he will wake slightly and move around the crib throughout the night, he is always able to put himself back to sleep. I only know that he woke because he's in a different spot!

@schubr03: That sounds like some progress at least. I would say that early wake up (the 9:30) really seems to me like a sign of not being quite tired enough (it can also be a sign of being overtired, but I don't think that sounds like the case here).

I think it's an unpopular opinion, but I don't allow naps over 2 hours (unless he's sick.) Our schedule at 7.5 months is:
7 a.m.--Up
9 a.m.--Nap
11 a.m.--Up
1:30 p.m.--Nap
3:30 p.m.--Up
7 p.m.--Bedtime

This last stretch is a bit tricky for him, but we try to fit in a walk, plus he loves exploring solids, so he spends a lot of awake time throwing food on the ground, so he's usually pretty ready for naps/bed.

ETA: It's rare that I have to wake him from a nap at this point. He usually naps 1.5-1.75 hours. But if we hit 2 hours, I wake him.

So last night went okay. She woke twice last night. First at 9:30pm (went down finally at 8:30), my hubby wasn't home yet, so I went in a just calmed her without nursing. Then She slept until 1:30am. I sent hubby in at first for that, but she was giving all signs of hunger, which made sense since I had fed her last at 7:15pm. So I nursed her. But then she thought it was party time and was up for an hour and a half total. So she finally fell back asleep at 3ish. She then slept until 6:15am and was up for the day. I know she isn't getting enough restful sleep at night because she took at 3 hour nap this morning, I actually went to wake her at the 3 hour mark.
Our biggest struggle is that we can get her to sleep by calming her down and then letting her fall asleep in her crib on her own, but ten minutes later she rolls herself over and is on all fours and is screaming.
Gonna try another night of hubby going in if she wakes before 2. Hubby is struggling to be able to get her to calm down. But I know it will take time. Hopefully she'll have a better night tonight.

Question: do you wake your LO up during naps throughout the day? For example, only let them sleep for 1 hour at a time or whatever.

All our our night sleep issues resolved when we cut down on her day sleep. I've been lax since I SAH too but, now that she's down to one nap I'm more of a stickler.
