@T.H.O.U.: that's what we've been doing! I gave her a wooden spoon and we found objects in the house to bang on. We have been trying to make a boom! as loud as we can.

She's super into it!

I also find that if I suggest a feeling or emotion with something, then she associates it just because I suggested it.

So asking "Why does it make you afraid" may just remind her that thunder is associated with the feeling of being afraid. Instead, go off of what @Mamaof2: recommended and say, Wow that is loud like thunder. This is FUN. and try to associate the loud noise with a happy/safe/fun feeling.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Maybe try making loud noises with everyday objects. Bang 2 pans together and say "wow that is loud! Just like thunder" Then let her try. Make it fun. Ask her to find 2 objects that make LOUD booms! Then ask if those are scary? Try to help her realize that thunder booms are just like pots and pans banging!

Or you can always try the "angels/clouds/whatever are bowling in the sky" - make it silly! In the Franklin book cloud giants are making all the rukus!

When DD started having nightmares, we allowed her to sleep with her lights on. She has night light, two wall lamps from Ikea, and a table lamp. I think it's bright in her room, but she sleeps with all of those lights on most of the time. Occasionally she sleeps in the dark, but we let her make that decision on her own.

She also listens to some soft cds (usually Josh Groban or some toddler bedtime cds) at bedtime. They block out the noise from outside her room and if she gets up in the middle of the night, listening to her cds calms her down and puts her back to sleep.

@Mamaof2: thank you so much for the book recommendations! Definitely getting those!

Chloe turned 2 this October. Her imagination is tuning wild!

I just asked her why she's afraid of booms and she frowned and said "mama, booms loud. Thunder! No!! Hold me!"

Do you think a book might help her? My DS went thru a phase of being scared and we started reading a few books on them and it def helped! Now when he hears thunder he tells me "Mommy thunder isn't scary"

Here are 2 we have

Franklin and the Thunderstorm
http://www.amazon.com/Franklin-And-Thunderstorm-Paulette-Bourgeois/dp/0590026356

Flash Crash Rumble Roll
http://www.amazon.com/Flash-Crash-Rumble-Franklyn-Branley/dp/0064451798/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384954096&sr=8-1&keywords=flash+crash+rumble+roll

In the meantime I would just comfort her, don't dismiss her fears (not saying that you are) . Also if she needs the big light for this period let just leave it on.

I would also talk to her about why she is scared. Is it the loud noise? Does she think it will hurt her? Does she think the house will fall down? etc....

BTW... I have no idea how old your DD is so hope these ideas work for her!

@T.H.O.U.: she has a plug in night light that surprisingly gives off a fair amount of light. We used that until the storm hit. Now she won't walk into her room unless the big light is on.

We let her play outside in the rain a few times this summer. We love to jump in puddles! It rained a lot this Halloween and was unusually warm out, so we jumped in puddles then, too.

Nothing is working!

What kind of night light does she have? Any white noise music?

The only other though I would have is to find a nice fun friendly rain shower and let her play outside in the rain and see that its not scary. Give her a positive memory to associate the storm with. Maybe even watch some fun light youtube videos if possible?

We had a lot of thunderstorms this past summer. In August we had an especially bad one. Lightening struck something on the street behind our house, and the news reported another house was struck by lightening in our plan. It was a slow moving storm and seemed to linger for awhile. Chloe was terrified. The storm obviously woke her up, and when we went to get her the power went out.

That was three months ago and Chloe will not go in her bedroom without her light on. She occasionally wakes up screaming and tells me there are booms! Thunder!

She woke up twice last night because of booms and slept in our bed. We've tried talking to her about why storms happen, that mama & papa won't let anything happen to her, that home is a safe place.. Nothing works!

How do we make her feel safe? Help her sleep through the night? To not be afraid anymore?
