So last night I tried out letting him fuss a little. I fed him at 1.30 and 3.30 as normal, and then when he started waking again around 4 I waited to see what happened. He would fuss for around 20 seconds, then go quiet for about 10 mins (his breathing sounded like he was asleep), then start fussing again. At no point did he fuss / cry for longer than 40 seconds, but this on /off pattern went on for about an hour and a half, with no more than around 15 minutes sleep each time. At around 5.30 he finally seemed to settle into a deeper sleep and didn't wake again until 6.30, which is his usual time to start the day.

Is this normal?? He never seemed too distressed, but I have no idea why he kept waking back up after putting himself back to sleep.

He is so good about going to sleep the rest of the time that I am afraid I am missing something that is bothering him. The rest of the time I lay him down awake and off to sleep he goes - at nap this morning he just lay there happily and giggled himself to sleep!

Take this with a grain of salt as my son is only just 4 months, but we did some CIO with checks about a week ago to try and teach him to put himself down, and since we did that he's gone from waking 2-3 times in the night to once, around 4 (sometimes as late as 530, which i almost count as STTN). I know their sleep patterns change around 5 months and he's likely to start waking more frequently, but for now it seems that letting him fuss himself to sleep has helped with night wakings.
Good luck!

Yup, feeding twice during the night, usually around 1 and 4. He does eat solids at dinner time, but the amount varies wildly - some days it's almost nothing, some days it's loads. It doesn't seem to make a difference to his wake ups!

I think I could just roll with it if he was only waking up to eat, but it is the rest of the wake ups that are driving me crazy! Last night he was up at 12.10am, 12.20am, 12,50am, 2am, 3am, 4am, 5.15am… and then he started the day at 5.50am. I only fed him at 2am and 4am - and all the other times it only took about 5 minutes to get him back to sleep, but I am mystified as to why he is waking! He went from 7.15pm to 12.10am without a peep!

With sleep training, do you do it for all the MOTN wake ups as well? From the limited amount I've read it seems a lot of people just do it for going to bed, and then the baby stops waking up so much at night! This is why I thought when he had the falling asleep alone sorted that we would be all good!

Thanks so much for all the opinions.

My dd is similar. She goes to sleep by herself from wide awake but still wants to eat a couple times during the night. I've read that this is actually very common. We are just rolling with it (and drinking more coffee).

I would consider sleep training if you aren't opposed to it. For us, it was only CIO hell for two nights, I almost quit but dh kept me strong. I used the timer and really stuck to it. Then magically it worked on night 3 and has been absolute heaven ever since!! Best thing we ever did.

So you are feeding him twice during the night? 1 am and then again between 3-4 am? Honestly, that sounds exactly how my daughter was for a while. She would go to bed between 5-7 pm and then wake around 1 to eat and again between 3-4 am. After a while she started only waking up once to eat, I'd say around 6 month mark she went down to 1 night time feeding and it could be anytime between 1am-4 am.

At 6 months we introduced solids at dinner time and after that she started sleeping through the night, no wake ups at all! From 6-7pm-4-5 am. Recently, she's started to wake up once or twice, but I just go in and put in her paci bc i know she's not hungry and then she quickly falls back to sleep.

Thanks so much for the replies. I think you are right that it is habit, as the times are so regular and don't seem to be affected by how much he eats during the day (he's started solids but sometimes is far more keen than others).

We've not tried any sort of formal sleep training, but I do try and be consistent, I don't offer him a feed before 1am, and I don't pick him up out of the cot, I just comfort him in there. I think I am too much of a wuss for proper CIO, but my husband has suggested letting him fuss for just a minute or so and seeing what happens - I'm more of a jump straight out of bed sorta gal which I know is probably not helping!

Maybe I do need to move his bedtime feed earlier! Also perhaps it will just take him a bit longer to apply his going to sleep skills in the MOTN? He's only been doing it himself at bedtime for a month or so!

Night wakings and putting herself to sleep were separate for my LO. At 6.5 months, they don't really need to eat in the middle of the night. They will eat if offered but I don't think it is physically necessary. Like a previous poster says, he might be waking up out of habit. If you drop the motn feeding, they will make up for it somewhere else in the day. We had to sleep train (CIO) for night wakings at that age, then we sleep trained again when she was older to put herself to sleep. If you are not into cio, there are a lot of moms here that have done a no cry method who I am sure have good advice for you!

Could just be waking out of habit. Have you tried sleep training?

We dealt with a similar issue when LO was younger. I would nurse her, she would be drowsy but still awake, and then she'd go right to sleep in her crib. What we had to do was move nursing to earlier, so it's not the last thing you do before bedtime- so LO is wide awake when they go into crib. We did bath, PJ's/lotion, white noise, nurse, then 1 or 2 books, then into crib awake. Even after we sleep trained at 6.5 months, we still had 1-2 night feeds for a few months.

Needing some advice about LOs night time sleeping habits!

He's 6.5 months. He goes to bed at around 7.15pm, and feeds the first time at about 1am. He seems genuinely hungry and eats a lot. He doesn't fall asleep feeding, but when I lay him in the cot he goes off to sleep on his own. Same again between 3 and 4am, although I suspect he's not actually hungry here and it's just habit.

On top of this he's waking at around 11.30pm and often again somewhere else in the night. He doesn't want to be fed, he just cries and kind of twists around and throws his head about. I shh him and stroke him, and he goes back to sleep pretty quickly, but never stays down too long after one of these wake ups before being up again.

He's generally a rockstar napper (after a lot of work to move him from sling naps to cot naps!), and takes 2 naps a day, one 45mins - 1.5 hrs, and the other 2hrs to 2.75hrs. He puts himself to sleep from drowsy for both these naps, and does the same at bedtime.

I know he may still need to feed at night at this age, but didn't think he'd still be waking this much! I thought if they put themselves to sleep it was supposed to help night wakings, but this doesn't seem to be the case for LO!

Would love to hear anyone's thoughts!
