@Weagle: @skipra: @jmarionsmith: @NovBaby1112: @Jess1483: Thank you all so much for your responses! It sounds like we're not alone! We'll definitely cut the nap at 3pm and hopefully that will help. @skipra: I feel like he also needs us to tell him multiple times to go to sleep and lay down and we haven't even started the transition from the crib yet!

DS is 23 months and we are in the process of moving him to a twin bed. He fights going to bed at night and it's even harder with the bed but he sleeps better once he is asleep. He normally naps from 12-2 and if he goes down late or is sleeping longer I try not to let him sleep past 2:30 and never past 3. For bedtime one of us has to sit with him or else he wont go to sleep. If he gets up we just put him back down. Usually we have to threaten to put him in the crib and leave before he calms down and falls asleep. He was never one to sleep thru the night but does more often if he's in the bed. If he's in the crib he wakes and asks to be moved to the bed.

LO is 27 months. We haven't had any middle of the night wake-ups, but for the past month or so we hear her talking to herself for up to two hours after laying her down. She does it every night. She never gets fussy, so we haven't really done anything about it - after all, she eventually goes to sleep. But this week we've started going in after 10-20 minutes to tell her to lay down. She'll be moving to a twin bed before too long, and we need to set the expectation that bedtime = no playing before we start that transition. I think for us moving to a twin bed won't help the situation.

yeah we try not to let lo nap longer than 2 hours (he's 23 months). if he takes an earlier nap because he seems extra tired i will let him go 2.5 hours but we don't let him sleep past 2:30 pm, no matter what.

he lays down at 8 and is usually asleep by 8:30. you might need more time between when he wakes up from nap and bedtime...

eta: with all that said, lo rarely even sleeps longer than 2 hours for nap. usually just an hour and a half.

I edited the post to add our naptimes. I know that we've been totally spoiled so I don't mind cutting his nap short, but I don't want to cut it too short if it's just entirely developmental. :)

How long is nap? We've had to cut my 20 month-old's nap down since he was about 16 months. If he sleeps any more than 1.5 hours at nap, it takes forever for him to fall asleep, and he wakes up at the same time regardless. It's also a fairly early nap (usually 11:30-1 or 12-1:30), so he's awake plenty before bedtime. But that doesn't totally solve our problem. Last night, he was awake for 45 minutes before falling asleep (just playing), but usually it's 10-20.

what time does he wake up for the day and what time is "bedtime"? My LO is 21 months, but I know if she naps longer than 2.5 hours (which is rare) she fights going to bed even harder. I really do like to limit her naps to 2 hours max during the day.

I know I'm not on the boards much, BUT, I could use some advice on toddler sleep. Since we got back from vacation a couple of weeks ago I feel like Little P's sleep has been in the toilet!

Well, his naps are still good, but he takes forever to fall asleep at night! He's also been getting up in the night. I've heard this is a 2 year old "thing," but I'm wondering what to do about it. He will play in his crib for at least an hour before falling asleep and I'm sure it would be much, much longer if we didn't eventually go in there and rock him to sleep. :/ I feel like the nights when he's up MOTN is because he's OT because he fell asleep so late!

Does anyone have tips on helping them fall asleep faster? Without creating bad habits? Also, did moving to a toddler bed HELP any of you with all of this? And did anyone cut naps short to help them fall asleep earlier? He's a power sleeper and we already wake him up at 3:30 from his nap (after a 3 hr nap), but I'm wondering if we should wake him at 3?

ETA: Well, we've been quite spoiled in terms of naps. He used to sleep from about 12:00-3:30 (we'd have to wake him) and would still go to sleep by 7:30 at night and sleep 11 hours! But, now he's usually asleep around 12:30 and I've still been waking him up around 3:30. I'm wondering if I should wake him even earlier now? So, he used to get over 14 hours of sleep a day and the way it is now, because it takes him so long to fall asleep, it's more like 13 hours.
